Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Tony Tony Chopper.
---
"Go on, go on, stop bothering me. You guys figure it out yourselves. If you're choosing a king, I think Dalton would be a good choice," Kureha waved dismissively but offered a suggestion.
Zoro nodded. "That guy's not bad. He's the one we met when we first arrived. He organized everyone to resist the pirates — he's clearly respected. We could give him a shot."
"Then let's do it. Come on, Chopper, you're coming too," Shin'ya agreed, grabbing Chopper by the scruff.
Chopper looked at Kureha pitifully. "Doctor Kureha~"
Kureha made up her mind. "Go, Chopper. Go out to sea with them. See the world, learn about more diseases — then figure out how to cure them. Didn't you always say you wanted to find the all-purpose remedy? You'll never do it stuck here. Go, Chopper."
Shin'ya scooped Chopper up and left, saying as he walked, "Don't be so sad. We'll be back after we beat Wapol to a pulp. You've still gotta say a proper goodbye, right?"
Luffy took the lead, walking ahead. This time, without the wooden dragon, they weren't in a rush and strolled down leisurely.
On the way down the mountain, they ran into the Lapahn again and almost picked a fight. Chopper managed to communicate with them, and their boss allowed them to pass peacefully, letting everyone reach the town safely.
As soon as they entered the city, someone ran to inform Dalton.
Before long, Dalton and his men showed up and led Luffy and the others to his residence.
Dalton glanced at Nami, then looked at Luffy and asked, "Your friend's recovered, right? Is there anything else you need?"
Luffy was about to speak, but Nami pulled him aside and said to Dalton, "Don't mind him, I'll explain. Do you want this country to prosper — free from kings like Wapol?"
Dalton's expression tensed. "What are you implying? You have a plan?"
Nami made a throat-slitting gesture. "Simple. Kill Wapol. You become king. What do you think?"
Dalton stroked his chin thoughtfully.
After a long silence, he looked at Luffy and Shin'ya and said, "I don't want to kill him. As much as we despise him, Wapol's a king of a World Government-affiliated country. He's sent countless Berries to a Celestial Dragon over the years. If we kill him, there's a risk of retaliation from the Celestial Dragons. If they target us, it'll be catastrophic."
"I've seen the newspapers about your crew. I know you're strong — you could kill him easily. But I can't gamble the lives of the entire country on the chance that the higher-ups won't intervene. So instead, I want you to help us drive him off Drum Island and make sure he never comes back."
After speaking, Dalton knelt down. "For this country, please… help us."
Chopper's heart softened. He turned to Shin'ya, who was holding him, and said in a soft voice, "Shin'ya~ Please help them. And when it's over, I promise I'll go to sea with you."
Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Usopp, and even Princess Vivi lit up with joy. They crowded around Chopper, praising him until he was dizzy.
Luffy's killing intent eased. He patted his chest, pulled Dalton to his feet, and grinned. "Leave it to us. Now take us to Wapol."
Dalton felt a surge of relief. As long as Wapol was gone, the people's lives would finally improve — and the sick could be treated.
"Come on, this way. I'll take you to the kingdom's prison," Dalton said, hurrying toward the cells.
The Straw Hats followed closely behind.
Soon, they arrived. Inside, Wapol sat shackled in Seastone handcuffs, looking weak and pitiful.
Luffy stepped forward, his eyes filled with killing intent. "Hey, Wapol, right? We're here to save this country — and you're in our way. So you've got two choices: live or die."
"The first choice," Luffy continued, "we kill all of you and pick a new king ourselves."
Before he could explain the second option, Wapol scrambled upright in terror. "You can't kill me! I'm the king of a World Government-affiliated country! I have connections with a Celestial Dragon! If you kill me, they'll hunt you down — probably even send an Admiral after you!"
"World Government? Celestial Dragons? I don't give a damn who's backing you," Luffy spat, his glare sharp as blades. "If you won't leave, we'll kill you!"
He took a deep breath. "Second choice — you and your goons leave this island now. But you don't take the doctors. And you never come back. We'll leave a Den Den Mushi here. If you set foot here again, we'll hunt you down and finish the job. Got it?"
Chopper teared up, deeply moved. He never imagined Luffy and the others would risk making enemies of a Celestial Dragon for his sake.
"… I found them," Chopper whispered. "Companions willing to risk everything for me."
Wapol, trembling under Luffy's glare, stammered, "I—I choose 2! We'll leave now! Right away!"
Shin'ya stepped forward. "You better remember what you just said. If you come back, I'll show you what it's like to be turned into a peeing beef ball without using my hands."
"Y-yes, of course! Just please, unlock the cuffs and let my men go. We'll leave now," Wapol babbled, nodding desperately.
One hour later…
On the coast of Drum Island, Wapol and his hundreds of subordinates set sail aboard the Ironclad in a random direction. Wapol looked back at the island bitterly. "Damn it… life's too cruel. Everyone bullies me… there's no justice!"
As Wapol left, Dalton knelt again, bowing deeply to the Straw Hats. "Thank you for everything. The Straw Hat Pirates are forever friends of Drum Island. You're welcome here anytime."
Luffy helped him up. "Don't overthink it. We did it for our buddy Chopper."
Shin'ya looked at Dalton. "Got any seeds? Red flowers. I want a big bag."
Dalton raised a brow but didn't question it. "Yeah, wait a sec. I'll fetch some."
He returned soon with a large sack of seeds and handed them over.
"There's a lot in here — mostly red flowers. Unfortunately, you won't see much bloom here."
"Thanks. Someday you will," Shin'ya replied.
---
Hours later — evening.
A cold wind howled through the mountains, flinging snow into the air.
Luffy and the crew returned to the castle with Chopper. Dalton followed close behind. With Wapol gone, the sick were finally receiving treatment. They'd spent all morning helping, only returning at night. Dalton had asked Kureha to teach others medical skills.
Chopper, kindhearted as ever, couldn't ignore the sick.
In the kingdom's plaza, Shin'ya used Wood Release to construct a building covering the entire area so Chopper could treat patients inside. The hundred or so remaining doctors helped too.
Back at the castle, Chopper darted to Kureha and hugged her tight.
"Doctor Kureha, I'm going to be a pirate! I'm going on an adventure with Luffy and the others!"
Kureha stared at the crew in disbelief. "You actually convinced him? You guys are something else, hahaha~"
She teasingly scolded him. "Chopper, going to sea as a pirate is dangerous. You could get killed, you know. Still want to go?"
Chopper's face was resolute. "I'll go. I'll be their ship's doctor. I'm grateful to you, Doctor Kureha. This is where I met you and Doctor Hiluluk. I'll miss you. One day you'll see my name in the newspaper. After I make the all-purpose cure, I'll come back and stay by your side."
He clung to her pants, crying.
"Hahaha~ Go, Chopper. You'll only get stronger out on the seas. Staying here won't do you any good," Kureha chuckled, stroking his head.
She looked to the crew. "You lot — take care of him. He's my best student. If anything happens to him, I'll make you pay."
Night fell, and the castle was filled with laughter.
---
The next morning.
Chopper packed his things and opened the castle gate, only to be stunned by what he saw.
As far as the eye could see, the landscape was painted in crimson. Trees blanketed in red flowers covered Drum Island.
Luffy and the crew gathered, hugging Chopper.
"This is for you, Chopper — red flowers on a snow-covered island."
Chopper's eyes brimmed with tears. "Everyone… thank you… boohoo~~"
At that moment, Kureha hurled a liquor bottle at them. "Get out of here, already! You're ruining my morning!"
Chopper grabbed a sled. "Everyone, on! Time to set sail!"
They leapt aboard as Chopper hitched the sled to the cable, speeding down the mountain.
Kureha stepped outside, gazing silently toward the departing sled.
"You're not going to see him off properly?" Dalton asked, coming up beside her.
"He's just a pet I raised. Now someone else is taking him. I hate tearful goodbyes," Kureha replied stubbornly — though tears streamed down her face.
Chopper, sensing something, looked back at the castle.
"It's finally begun… my adventure. Take care, Doctor Kureha."
