One piece:The capable recruit

Chapter 21: Chapter 21

Marshal Kong had seen a lot in his lifetime.

As a profession, being a marine was one of the most dangerous in the world. The mortality rate among marines far exceeded that of most others. As a result, Kong had seen many of his subordinates come and go.

One of those subordinates had been the father of Marine Kake.

Because of this, Kong held a special, albeit distant, place in the network of relationships surrounding Marine Kake. In fact, Kong was the highest-ranking figure connected to Kake.

In the world of One Piece, personal relationships often seemed irrelevant. Luffy had never met his father. Ace believed Whitebeard to be his real father. And Luffy's mother? A brief mention, a shadow. It gave the impression that familial ties held little weight.

But that impression was only surface-deep.

The truth was, in this world, many still held to reason, modern principles, and responsibility.

Kong had received countless deathbed requests from his soldiers to look after their sons. Most of the time, he arranged jobs for them.

But very few were as ambitious as Marine Kake.

They weren't related by blood. But their bond was still something.

That's why Marine Kake felt he could approach Kong directly.

As soon as he entered the office, Kake got straight to the point.

"Marshal Kong, I heard there's a new recruit undergoing a potential assessment. He's a swordsman, right? I've been training in swordsmanship recently too. Let me test him!"

Kake's eyes burned with determination.

More than proving himself, he wanted to defeat Kyle publicly.

If he could do that, then maybe—just maybe—Gion would see him differently.

Kong looked him over, frowning.

He knew Kake's personality well.

Honestly, he was more troublesome than even Kizaru.

So this sudden enthusiasm for a recruit test? It raised suspicion.

Before Kong could reply, Admiral Sengoku intervened:

"Kake, the one assigned to test Kyle is already confirmed—Momousagi Gion. We've finalized the plan. No changes."

Sengoku knew Kake's reputation. And though the final paperwork hadn't been signed, he didn't want any disruption.

He preferred order.

Hearing that, Kong raised his large hand to give a final command.

"Then—"

"Wait," Kake interrupted. "Let me do it. I heard this rookie has a Gravity-type Devil Fruit. I've spent years researching Devil Fruits in the lab. I'm more suitable than Gion."

Kake was persistent.

And Kong, who had started to wave him off, paused.

It was just a recruit evaluation.

As long as nobody got seriously hurt, why not?

And there was logic in what Kake said. Gion was a swordswoman. Kake had studied Devil Fruits. Perhaps this would result in a more thorough evaluation.

This test mattered—for both the recruit and the Marine Corps.

"Very well. Approved," Kong said finally.

"Sengoku, make the arrangements. I'm departing for Marigeiose in two days. Tomorrow, I want to see what this recruit you're all praising can actually do."

"Yes, sir!"

Meanwhile, back at the training grounds.

The battle was still raging.

Kyle and Zephyr had already exchanged multiple rounds.

By now, they had each gauged the other's strength.

Kyle was exceeding Zephyr's expectations.

It felt almost like destiny.

Now, Zephyr wanted to push further. He wanted to see what happened when Lai Mu fully used the Gravity Fruit's power.

"Black Fist!"

Zephyr roared and launched a punch cloaked in armored Haki.

It was the strongest blow yet.

He blitzed toward Kyle.

BOOM!!

CLANG!!

Kyle crossed his twin blades just in time to intercept.

The impact rang like a bell, echoing across the square.

Zephyr's haki-infused fist was monstrous.

Kyle was blasted backward—but controlled his movement with precision.

A true swordsman knew: if your blade couldn't cut through, you needed distance, strategy.

But this wasn't a real duel.

This was a stage.

And Kyle had already accomplished his goal: attention.

Winning or losing didn't matter now.

Powerful shockwaves rolled out from the clash.

They looked like tsunamis of air.

Even Vice Admirals were forced back, shielding themselves.

Then—

Kyle's wrists tensed.

His sword, Sakura Jumuku, spun and locked into position.

He gripped both hilts tightly.

The blades crossed behind his back in a wide stance.

In that instant—

A flash of violet burst forth.

The space behind him twisted.

It resembled the Mangekyō—but purple, surreal, and unstable.

Marine officers watching felt their knees buckle. The gravity pulled at their bodies like unseen hands.

Weaker soldiers dropped to one knee.

Kyle hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then his power surged. He slashed through the air.

Two strikes, one motion.

"Tiger's Ultimate Gravity Strike!
