Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Family Dinner
On his way home, Jiang Kai stopped by a deli and bought several cooked dishes. He also picked up a pack of Tsingtao beer at a small shop in the shantytown area.
As he returned the shared bike, Jiang Kai instinctively glanced at the street corner.
Luckily, the black van wasn't parked there this time.
"Wonder if Huang Da's out yet. After last time, at least in reality, he should be laying low for a while," Jiang Kai guessed.
———
After weaving through the maze-like alleys, Jiang Kai finally arrived at his doorstep.
There were a few newer wooden planks on the door, ones Jiang Kai had hastily replaced when repairing the door last time. But now, it seemed his big brother had reinforced it further, making it even sturdier.
From inside, he could hear a soft voice—it was Yingzi.
"Brother, love you to death. My favorite—spicy chicken feet."
"This girl, those are for Kai. He passed the rookie trial. We must celebrate."
"Brother, you're so biased. School is exhausting for me too... Fine, I won't eat them. But how about you eat one? Look at you—you're so skinny now."
"I'm not eating that stuff. What's so great about it?"
"Brother, how about we split one..."
Hearing Yingzi trying to lay claim to his chicken feet, Jiang Kai pushed the door open with a laugh.
"Who's sneaking bites of my spicy chicken feet?"
Inside the cramped room, two people were gathered around a small wooden table. Three stir-fried dishes sat on the table.
One figure had his back to Jiang Kai. His faded blue-and-white recycling station uniform looked oversized and hung loosely on him. He was pulling a pack of spicy chicken feet out of a plastic bag. Across from him, the other person was reaching for a chicken foot.
Both turned their heads simultaneously.
Upon seeing Jiang Kai, Jiang Ying abandoned her beloved chicken feet, leaped over, and threw herself into his arms.
"Second Brother!"
"Your hands! Your hands! They're covered in grease." Jiang Kai exclaimed in mock disgust.
He then looked toward his big brother.
Jiang Lan's face was pale, with sunken cheeks and hollow eyes. He was thinner than before. At 1.7 meters tall, he likely didn't even weigh 100 pounds.
Jiang Lan smiled as he looked at Jiang Kai. Despite his dry eyes, they held joy and relief.
Had his body deteriorated to this extent? Luckily, Jiang Kai had come back early.
Even with little more than a month left to live, his brother hadn't stopped working. At home, he was always busy as well. Thinking about his brother's sacrifices over the years, Jiang Kai forced back his tears and smiled.
"Brother."
"You little brat, you finally decided to come home." Jiang Lan didn't notice Jiang Kai's abnormal expression but did see the things he was carrying.
"You bought cooked dishes? And... beer?"
"Beer?" Jiang Ying's eyes lit up when she saw what Jiang Kai was holding. "Haha! Food and beer—Big Brother, Second Brother, tonight we drink until we drop. Second Brother, you must tell me about Ghost Star. You owe me a good story."
Jiang Kai rolled his eyes at her. "Drink until we drop? I bought you soda."
"It's the weekend. I don't have school tomorrow. I want to drink beer too." Jiang Ying protested.
"Whatever," Jiang Kai dismissed her and placed the food and drinks on the table. "Come help. Tonight, we're having a feast."
Jiang Kai had bought all meat dishes. As he unpacked each one, Jiang Ying couldn't stop swallowing her saliva, while Jiang Lan looked a bit distressed.
"All this meat must've cost quite a bit," Jiang Lan said.
Jiang Kai placed a hand on his brother's shoulder and pressed him into a chair. "Brother, tonight you just eat and drink well. Don't worry about anything else. And later, I have an important announcement to make."
With the dishes Jiang Kai had brought, the table quickly became overflowing, making the small wooden table look packed.
Jiang Kai popped open a bottle of beer on the edge of the chair, handed one to his big brother, set one in front of himself, and then noticed Yingzi's pleading eyes. Giving in, he opened another bottle and placed it in front of her.
"Thanks, Brother!"
Jiang Lan gave Jiang Ying a stern look. "You're only allowed one bottle."
"Okay!"
Jiang Lan kept looking at Jiang Kai. When the food and drinks were ready, he finally asked, "Second Brother, you said you had something to announce. Judging by this grand setup... what's the big news?"
Jiang Kai smiled faintly and used his chopsticks to give his brother and Yingzi each a roasted drumstick.
"Brother, you don't need to go to work anymore."
Jiang Lan chuckled and shook his head. "How can I not work? The household expenses are huge, Yingzi needs to go to school... Second Brother, don't get cocky just because you passed the trial. Even though the Destiny Calling can earn money, it's not easy."
"It's hard to earn nuclear soil. You need to work for guilds to earn enough points to exchange for it. For combat professions, earning points isn't hard. But for you, with no profession, it's already lucky to find a guild. You'd still have to work steadily to accumulate enough points. It's just like having a job."
Jiang Kai froze for a moment. How did his brother know so much about the Destiny Calling?
He'd never mentioned it before.
Maybe, once upon a time, his brother also dreamed of entering the Destiny Calling to change their family's fate.
Jiang Kai smiled slightly. "Brother, I understand everything you said. But I don't need to work for any guild. Starting today, you won't go to work anymore. Not only that, but after dinner, we're going straight to the central hospital in the General District."
Using a commanding tone, Jiang Kai added, "You're going to focus on getting better. For me and Yingzi, you must recover."
Hearing this, Jiang Lan and Jiang Ying froze, staring at Jiang Kai in shock.
Jiang Lan was stunned that his younger brother knew about his illness, while Yingzi looked more confused.
"Second Brother, is Big Brother sick?"
Jiang Kai nodded. "Kidney failure. He needs treatment within a month and a half."
"Kidney failure..." Jiang Ying looked as if she'd been struck by lightning. Her eyes widened, and her tears welled up instantly. The delicious food on the table lost all appeal.
Jiang Kai smiled at her. "Don't worry. No matter how much it costs, I'll make sure Big Brother gets the best treatment."
At that moment, Jiang Lan slammed his chopsticks onto the table.
"Who said I'm going to the hospital? Jiang Kai, have you grown wings and decided you can make decisions for me now?"
From childhood to adulthood, his brother had never been this fierce.
But Jiang Kai wasn't the least bit angry. He quickly replied, "Brother, not only will you go, but you must go."
Jiang Lan snapped, "Do you know how much it costs to treat this illness? Even if you've entered the Destiny Calling, you can't earn that kind of money."
"I can earn it!" Jiang Kai said firmly. He quickly tapped his wristwatch, which projected a number: [1,849,826. Alliance Coins]
"This... this is..." Jiang Ying stared at her second brother in shock.
"This is what I earned in ten days on the Destiny Calling. Well, it was 1.85 million, but I spent a little on food, so there's this much left," Jiang Kai explained. "Big Brother, in ten days, I earned 1.85 million. The next time I log into the Destiny Calling, I'll definitely make enough for your treatment."
Jiang Lan stared wide-eyed at the enormous sum. For a family like theirs, this amount was unimaginable.
No one wants to wait for death, and Jiang Lan was no exception.
But their family's situation had never allowed him to seek treatment. Now, having resigned himself to despair, he suddenly saw hope. He didn't know how to react.
"This... this much money..."
"Kai, you insisted on taking the rookie trial... because you already knew about my illness..." Jiang Lan turned to look at Jiang Kai, finally understanding.
The usually thoughtful second brother had gone to great lengths, even at high costs, to join the Destiny Calling. The reason was now clear.
Jiang Kai's eyes were already blurry with tears. He nodded heavily. "Brother, sorry to say this, but the suici*e note you painstakingly wrote... it's useless now."
