Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Cage
Lin Yuhan shut her eyes, bracing for the inevitable agony. She could feel the icy tentacles tightening, their slick grip constricting her breath. The air grew thin, her vision blurring, her consciousness fading...
But the anticipated pain never came.
Slowly, she opened her eyes, finding herself in a place utterly alien.
A vast metal chamber, its walls lined with bizarre instruments and wires, pulsed with a cold, sterile light. The scene conjured images of science fiction films, those secret laboratories where human subjects were experimented upon. The air hung heavy with the metallic tang of disinfectant and the acrid scent of ozone, a suffocating blend that filled her with a sense of foreboding.
The black tentacles were gone, but she was still firmly secured to a metal platform, her wrists and ankles bound by cold, unyielding metal rings. She struggled to sit up, but her efforts were futile. The metal clamps bit into her flesh, unyielding, unforgiving.
"Where… where am I?" she gasped, her voice a mere whisper.
"Don't exert yourself, my dear. You're our guest," a cold voice echoed from a shadowy corner of the room, laced with a chilling amusement, as if savoring her struggle.
Lin Yuhan turned her head, her gaze drawn to a figure standing in the dim light. A man in a pristine white lab coat, his hair slicked back, his face framed by a pair of gold-rimmed spectacles, exuded an aura of scholarly refinement. But his eyes, cold and calculating, devoid of any warmth or empathy, held her captive in their icy gaze. He was observing her like a specimen, not a living being.
"Who are you? What are you doing to me?" Her voice trembled, a mixture of fear and rage bubbling inside her, threatening to break free.
"I am the director of this facility. You may call me Dr. X," the man replied, his voice flat and emotionless, tinged with a hint of arrogance. "As for what we intend to do, you'll soon find out."
He approached her, his gaze unwavering, a glint of amusement in his eyes.
"You see, you're quite special," Dr. X said, his voice a low, hypnotic murmur. "Your body harbors an energy unlike anything we've ever encountered."
Lin Yuhan's heart skipped a beat. Had they discovered the "overclocking" ability Chen Mo had warned her about?
"Don't worry, we mean you no harm," Dr. X said, his voice a soothing balm, though his eyes held a chilling intensity. "We're simply fascinated by your energy, eager to study it."
"Study?" Lin Yuhan scoffed, her voice laced with bitterness. "Do you think I'm some kind of lab rat?"
"Lab rat? No, no, you are far more valuable than that," Dr. X shook his head, a hint of fanaticism in his voice. "You are the key to our research, the key to unlocking a new world."
He extended a hand, his fingers brushing against her cheek, his gaze filled with a disturbing blend of fervor and avarice. "Your worth, my dear, is beyond your wildest imagination."
Lin Yuhan recoiled, a wave of revulsion washing over her. She wanted to pull away, but the metal clamps held her fast.
"What are you doing?!" she roared, her voice a blend of fear and fury.
"Don't be afraid, my little darling," Dr. X's voice was a seductive whisper, laced with a chilling undercurrent of menace. "Soon, you'll understand. It's all for your own good."
He clapped his hands, and two figures in black uniforms entered the chamber, carrying strange, metallic instruments.
"Prepare the subject," Dr. X commanded, his eyes gleaming with a disturbing intensity.
Lin Yuhan closed her eyes, a wave of despair washing over her. She knew what awaited her—endless torment, unimaginable pain. But even as the darkness closed in, a flicker of defiance remained, a spark of hope that she might somehow, against all odds, escape this nightmare.
