Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Reporting to the Hokage
"Kitazawa-sensei, thank you."
Kurama Yakumo rose to her feet and bowed.
In her eyes burned a fierce flame—any lingering gloom had been swept away.
"It's still a bit early to thank me," Kitazawa said with a smile. "I came today to arrange for you to return to the Ninja Academy."
"Really?"
Yakumo froze for an instant, then asked excitedly.
"Really."
Yūhi Kurenai stepped forward. "I still had reservations before, but after hearing what Kitazawa‑sensei just said, I'm on your side."
"Thank you, Kurenai-san!"
Yakumo couldn't hold back; a brilliant smile blossomed on her face.
Kurenai blinked in surprise.
It was the first time she had ever seen Yakumo so happy.
Until now the girl had always been somewhat gloomy, brows knit with worry.
"The idea of a psychological medical ninja is eye‑opening," Kurenai asked curiously. "How did you ever think of it?"
"A sudden flash of inspiration, really," Kitazawa replied off‑handedly.
In truth it came from the concept of psychologists in his previous life, but such a profession did not exist in the shinobi world. Ninjas fought for their lives every day; no one knew if they would live to see tomorrow, so mental health hardly seemed worth their concern.
"Without the knowledge to back it up, you don't get flashes of inspiration," Kurenai mused. "Even as a genjutsu specialist, I'd never considered it."
"It's only a concept so far," Kitazawa said modestly. "To become a psychological medical‑ninja will be a long, difficult road."
"I'm not afraid!"
Yakumo declared firmly.
Both her parents and Kurenai had tried to dissuade her from becoming a ninja.
Now that hope had appeared, she would not let it slip away.
"Besides, you have Kitazawa‑sensei, don't you?"
Kurenai added with a playful smile. "He'll help you."
Yakumo immediately looked at Kitazawa.
A moment ago she had barely known him, yet his words had already earned her trust—perhaps even admiration.
For someone who had suffered so long, this felt like salvation.
"When it comes to Yin Release, I can't compare to you," Kitazawa corrected. "I'll be relying on you quite a bit."
"No problem," Kurenai said, patting her chest. "Just come find me anytime."
Yakumo glanced left and right; she felt these two teachers got along very well.
"Come on, let's head back," Kurenai said, ruffling Yakumo's hair. "Don't worry—your parents will definitely agree."
"Right!"
Yakumo took a deep breath, tamping down her excitement and nerves.
She packed up her art tools and followed Kurenai and Kitazawa back to Villa.
…
"You want Yakumo to return to the Academy?"
Kurama Murakumo frowned when he learned why Kitazawa had come.
"Clan Head Kurama," Kurenai repeated Kitazawa's proposal in full.
Murakumo was taken aback.
"Special genjutsu ninja"?
"Psychological medical‑ninja"?
All of it sounded far too novel.
But excitement soon welled up in him:
If this was true, Yakumo might restore the Kurama clan's former glory.
"Then I leave it in your hands, Kitazawa-sensei,"
Murakumo said solemnly.
True or not, there was no harm in trying—as long as there was hope.
"Thank you, Father!"
Yakumo said gratefully.
When their business was done, Kitazawa and Kurenai left the villa.
…
"You should report this to Hokage-sama," Kurenai suddenly said, as a thought struck her.
Kitazawa paused, then understood.
Because the Kurama clan possessed a kekkei‑genkai, they were naturally on Hiruzen Sarutobi's radar—especially since Yakumo had been unusually frail since childhood.
Her kekkei‑genkai awakening could never escape Hiruzen's notice.
"And it's good news," Kurenai added. "You might even receive a reward."
"I'll take your blessing," Kitazawa replied. "When it happens, dinner's on me."
"I won't hold back," Kurenai laughed, waving. "See you Monday."
Kitazawa watched her walk away.
[Current Mission: Help classmate Kurama Yakumo return to the Ninja Academy.]
[Mission Reward: Demonic Illusion—Tree Binding Death.]
[Mission complete. Reward granted.]
Demonic Illusion—Tree Binding Death (Magen: Jubaku Satsu) is a genjutsu unrelated to the Sharingan.
In the original story, Kurenai used it against Uchiha Itachi.
The target hallucinates being bound to a tree, as the caster emerges from the trunk to strike.
It was designed to make foes mistake it for Hashirama's Wood Style and instinctively fear him.
Turning his gaze away, Kitazawa headed for the Hokage Tower.
Teachers got weekends off, but the Hokage did not—the job was year‑round.
When Naruto became Hokage in the original, he was swamped—practically the ultimate workhorse.
With permission granted, Kitazawa entered the Hokage's office.
"Ah, Kitazawa," Hiruzen Sarutobi greeted him warmly.
"Hokage-sama."
Kitazawa was unsurprised—though he had met Hiruzen only a few times, he guessed that thanks to Naruto, the Third had already looked into him back to the eighteenth generation.
Better safe than sorry: loyalty mattered.
"I visited Kurama Yakumo today," Kitazawa began. "I've spoken with her parents about her returning to the Academy."
"How do you know Yakumo?"
Hiruzen asked.
"Kurenai and I were classmates," Kitazawa explained. "She asked me to help."
"I'd forgotten that," Hiruzen murmured. "Was that all you came to tell me?"
To him, Yakumo's school return seemed too trivial to warrant a special report; he was, after all, a very busy Hokage.
"I have an idea regarding Yakumo's kekkei genkai," Kitazawa said, and retold his conversation with her.
At first Hiruzen paid little heed: whether Yakumo could realize her talent was uncertain.
But when Kitazawa mentioned psychological medical‑ninjas, Hiruzen's eyes widened and he unconsciously sat up straighter.
Medical‑ninjas heal the body with Yang Release.
Now Kitazawa suggested medical‑ninjas could also work through Yin Release.
Even the "Professor of Ninjutsu" was astonished.
More importantly, Hiruzen sensed that this idea could spark a revolution.
He thought of Tsunade's hemophobia.
Her importance to Konoha was self‑evident—if her trauma could be cured, it would be a tremendous boon.
Then another thought struck him: the Uchiha clan, whose intense emotions were practically legendary.
Kitazawa proposed psychological medical‑ninjas could treat mental scars—for instance, by absorbing negative emotions.
Ido was a Yin‑Release creature that grew by devouring negativity, after all—and if you talked about extreme emotions, the Uchiha were second to none.
