Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Secrets Beneath the Lake
The following night, Percy, Harry, Hermione, and Ron stood at the edge of the Black Lake, shrouded by the shadows of the towering castle behind them. The moonlight reflected off the water's still surface, casting an eerie glow.
"You sure this is a good idea?" Ron asked nervously, clutching his wand tightly. "Last time I went underwater here, I got dragged around by a bunch of Grindylows."
Percy smirked, rolling his shoulders. "Relax, Weasley. I've got this. Besides, the Grindylows won't mess with us when I'm around."
Harry adjusted his cloak. "Alright, what's the plan?"
Percy knelt down and dipped his fingers into the water. Instantly, he felt the familiar pulse of the sea, even in the murky freshwater. He whispered, calling forth the power of his father. The water swirled gently around his hand in response.
"I'll create an air bubble around us so we can breathe," Percy explained. "We'll swim straight down to the chamber entrance marked on the map. Once inside, stay close. There's no telling what kind of defenses are in place."
Hermione checked the enchanted map Ron had found in the archives. "The entrance should be about fifty meters down, near the base of the castle. It looks like an old passageway, possibly connected to the Founders."
Ron gulped. "Great. Just great."
Percy grinned. "Alright, team, hold onto me."
Harry, Hermione, and Ron each grabbed Percy's shoulders as he focused his will. The water obeyed, forming a shimmering bubble around them, sealing them inside a pocket of air.
"Hold on tight," Percy said, and with a flick of his wrist, the water carried them down.
The Descent
The group drifted deeper into the lake, passing schools of silvery fish and strands of swaying aquatic plants. The water grew darker, but Percy's senses remained sharp. He could feel the currents shift unnaturally near a rocky outcropping at the base of the castle.
"There," Hermione pointed at a large, barnacle-covered stone archway. Ancient runes lined the surface, glowing faintly in the dark. "That must be it."
Percy guided them closer, and as they approached, the runes flickered, reacting to their presence.
"I don't like this," Ron muttered. "Old, creepy ruins are never good news."
Percy reached out and pressed his hand against the rune-covered stone. A deep rumbling sound echoed through the water, and suddenly, the archway split apart, revealing a swirling vortex of dark water leading into the unknown.
Harry exchanged a glance with Percy. "We going in?"
Percy grinned. "Wouldn't be an adventure if we didn't."
With a surge of water, they were pulled through the vortex, landing unceremoniously on a stone platform inside a massive underwater chamber.
The Hidden Chamber
As Percy and the others caught their breath, they took in their surroundings. The chamber was enormous, with towering columns supporting the ceiling. Strange coral-like formations covered the walls, glowing faintly with an otherworldly blue light. In the center of the chamber, a pedestal stood, and atop it rested an ornate chest with intricate carvings of waves and tridents.
"Whoa," Harry breathed. "This must be it."
Hermione stepped forward cautiously, examining the pedestal. "This is old magic… ancient magic. We have to be careful."
Percy nodded, his eyes scanning the chamber for any threats. "Let's see what's inside."
As he reached out to touch the chest, the runes surrounding it blazed to life, and suddenly, the chamber trembled. The water around them swirled violently, and a deep voice echoed through the chamber.
"Who dares disturb the relic of the sea?"
Percy stepped back, drawing Riptide instinctively. "Uh… hi. Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon. Just looking for answers."
The voice rumbled again. "You carry the blood of the sea god. But are you worthy?"
Before Percy could respond, the water coalesced into a towering figure—a guardian spirit formed from the lake itself, its glowing eyes fixed on them.
"Great," Ron groaned. "Why is it always a guardian?"
The water guardian surged forward, wielding a spear of liquid energy. "Prove your strength, son of Poseidon!"
Percy smirked, raising his sword. "Alright, bring it on."
Battle Beneath the Lake
The guardian lunged, its spear thrusting toward Percy with lightning speed. Percy dodged, feeling the water move with him as he countered with a slash of Riptide. The celestial bronze blade cut through the water, but the guardian reformed instantly.
"Not gonna be that easy, huh?" Percy muttered.
Harry and Hermione fired off spells, sending bolts of magic that fizzled harmlessly against the guardian's form. Ron attempted a stupefy, which only seemed to make it angrier.
"We're not exactly helping here!" Ron yelled.
Percy gritted his teeth. "Just keep it distracted!" He focused, channeling his connection to the water. The currents responded, swirling around him as he raised both hands. "Alright, let's see how you like this!"
The water around them condensed into a powerful wave, slamming into the guardian with force. The figure staggered, its form flickering as Percy pressed his advantage.
Harry took the opportunity to grab the chest from the pedestal. The moment his fingers touched it, the guardian froze, its glowing eyes narrowing.
"The relic has been claimed… the trial is over."
The guardian slowly dissolved back into the water, the chamber settling into an eerie silence.
Percy exhaled, wiping sweat from his brow. "Well… that was fun."
Ron leaned against a column, breathing heavily. "Define fun."
Hermione's eyes were wide with excitement. "We actually found it. The relic of Atlantis."
Harry carefully held the chest, his face serious. "Let's get out of here before something else wakes up."
Percy nodded. "Agreed. Let's go."
Back at the Gryffindor Common Room
Once they were safely back in the common room, they gathered around the chest, which pulsed faintly with power.
Hermione carefully opened it, revealing a beautifully crafted seashell amulet resting atop a pile of ancient scrolls. As she picked it up, the air around them shimmered slightly.
Percy examined it closely. "I can feel it… this thing has some serious power. If it's connected to the Mist, it might be what's keeping the mortal and magical worlds apart."
Hermione nodded. "If Voldemort's forces get their hands on this, they could manipulate the Mist… expose both our worlds."
Harry's expression hardened. "Then we can't let that happen."
Ron sighed. "So, what now? Hide it? Destroy it?"
Percy shook his head. "We need to figure out how it works first. Then, we make sure it never falls into the wrong hands."
Hermione carefully closed the chest. "We'll need Dumbledore's help."
Percy leaned back in his chair, staring at the chest with a thoughtful expression. He'd come to Hogwarts looking for a place to hide, but it seemed the universe had other plans for him.
"Looks like we're in this for the long haul," Percy said.
Harry grinned. "We wouldn't have it any other way."
As the fire crackled in the common room, Percy couldn't help but feel that, for once, he might actually belong here.
At least until the next life-threatening adventure.
