Chapter 1006: New Terrain
When it came to controlling the land, the underground, the sky and the sea- The Undead Empire was more than capable, ruling over all forms of landscapes with an iron fist, no biome appearing out of their reach, even the dire environments and weathers proved to be little more than minor obstacles in their quests to expand Death's dominion.
But indeed, Loimos was made aware that the Empire had set its sight on a place where even the undead had a hard time exploring… What laid beyond the many layers of clouds, emptiness of space.
Now, much like everything else, space was not a single monolith, and some areas diverged wildly from the rest for no apparent rhyme or reason, but overall, it was a most treacherous place, Loimos had personally experienced it during his conflict with the golden one throughout countless memories.
Although the pure undead could exist and move through space without problem, this would not be the case for most undeads, the vacuum of space has many bizarre effects, and although undeads cna ignore anything related to oxygen as they do not breathe at all, they also don't to worry too much about the boiling of liquids, as even if they do have blood or bile that can be subjected to it, that won't do much to them.
The real problem to an undead being exposed to space is actually the least of the problems a living would be exposed to, being the fact that eventually, after several hours, you would be frozen solid.
As resilient as a corpse may be, once frozen completely, they can't do anything and will just start drifting aimlessly until either something crashes into them, and they get sucked into the gravitational field of a planet or something else.
Few undeads, even amongst those who were knowledgeable in the usage of frost, would be capable of resisting it, and even if they could, without the proper equipment, they can't do anything in space, which calls for the creation of special gear, tools and methods of transport.
The original idea of beginning a conquest of space had come from Vespertillo, in the olds days, when he had been experimenting, with his vampiric blood, or beast blood, using his capabilities to manifest the traits and powers of beasts and monsters of all sorts, he had stumbled upon a few creatures that had fallen from space, having neared too closely to the final layer of clouds.
As such, he was capable of flying through space.
But the one in charge of bulk of what was required to even get started was Atsalinopalo, his own vampiric blood, or pale silver blood, was more attuned toward machinery and beings that were not undeads, but lacked life force, he was amongst the best to be in charge of building things.
Loimos sent Gharl and Tiloh to work on the secret project as well.
Conquering space was a rather bold idea, as far as they were aware, no other civilisation had ever attempted such a thing, at least, any civilisation from here, who knew what sort of countries and empires existed on other planets…
However, there was no plan to delve too deeply for now, the point of the whole operation was to spread miasma all around the world, using the fact the vacuum of space had no ambient life force that could get in the way, basically manifest a dome around the entirety of the main world that would then be usable to send a descent of miasma upon a superpower, which the nearby vacuum under the Empire's control, that would also allow them to have the ability to dispatch troops wherever they wanted at any time.
And even if they could not use it to swiftly take out a fellow superpower, the simple fact that they had access to space in any capacity would make for a tremendous power in negotiations, as that would naturally allow them to explore different planets, discover exotic resources, specie, technologies and perhaps even ways of power to add to their arsenal.
"Hey, Verpertillo"
"What is it?" the bat-faced gravelord turned to his twin brother, the two currently overlooking one of the early designs for something that should allow for any undead to travel through space, the design was still rough and the number of problems was enormous, but it was only the beginning.
"Do you think that there is a space dragon?"
"What sort of question is that? Of course there is! Just like there will be space goblins- Humans, goblins and dragons are everywhere, no matter the environment, somehow, those three will always end up here" he replied with certainty.
"I was just thinking what we could squeeze from Ronarkatast if we presented him with a dragon from a different planet, he is quite generous even for draconic creatures that are rather far removed from dragons, he might lose is mind upon learning that there are more in space"
"That is for certain, but anyways, how are you progressing with the designs for… What are we calling those?" Vespertillo scratched his chin.
"Spaceship, I suppose, we always use the word 'ship' for everything… And as for the designs, we are running into quite a few problems, the idea is to prevent anyone inside from turning into an ice statue, but we would also like to have gravity inside, not just float in the air all the time… And although it for later, we would also need to deal with the rest of the problems due to space, as we will probably want to sent living soldiers up there eventually as well" Atsalinopalo explained, they were trying to use the ways in which they had created vessels capable of diving beneath the water all the way down the depths to create spaceships, but as it turns out, the vacuum of space and water where not all that similar, even from an engineering standpoint.
"...I could always go up into space, go to a planet with some sapients, and check if they have the knowledge, and you know… Steal it from them"
"Not a bad idea, but there are stray suns and stars up there, even if things don't work the exact same, you are likely to get turned into ash if you try it"
"Then we can ask Loimos to do it, I heard he went to a sun's core without problem whilst getting punched in the head, he can check" replied Vespertillo before looking around, as though he was almost expecting the skeleton to just pop out of nowhere after his name was mentioned…
