Pokemon: Lord of Fear

Chapter 45: Chapter 45: It's Time to Hire

So the question arises: if we were to make a special Pokémon version of a movie, how should the script be adapted?

First, based on the rules Edward had summarized, it was clear that the movie shouldn't feature any humans.

It should be a purely Pokémon movie, where all characters are Pokémon, and there are no human appearances. Furthermore, the ghosts in the movie shouldn't be Ghost-type Pokémon but rather other types.

[The male lead, Charizard, is chatting with his wife when he unexpectedly receives a Mimikyu doll from his hometown. His Ditto wife has her tongue ripped off.]

[Charizard is suspected of being the wife killer and is investigated by Officer Arcanine. Charizard decides to return to his hometown to investigate the mystery surrounding Mary Shaw.]

Edward quickly wrote a rough Pokémon version of Dead Silence.

Actually, adapting a Pokémon version of the movie wasn't too difficult; all he needed to do was replace the original human characters with Pokémon.

There were no special requirements for the Pokémon species, either. After all, according to the researchers, different species of Pokémon could also lay eggs.

"However, this Mary Shaw..." Edward scratched his head. He was making quick progress, but when it came to Mary Shaw, he found himself stumped.

In the original plot, Mary Shaw was an old woman with scars that hinted at her ghostly identity. But she wasn't particularly frightening, except for the oddity of her sticking out her tongue.

At least, in Edward's opinion, Mary Shaw still had a long way to go before matching up to her predecessors like Kayako or Sadako.

"The more gentle and lovely a Pokémon appears, the scarier it might look when turned into a ghost," Edward wrote his thoughts on the draft paper.

Maybe Chansey would be a good choice—taking these very gentle Pokémon and turning them into murderous ghosts could be frightening for the Pokémon, but it might backfire.

So, it would be best to wait and see after the short film After Dark was released before deciding on the cast.

"This is so troublesome. Can't we just get one good Pokémon movie?" Edward sighed, but at least the adaptation of Dead Silence was making some progress. He could continue to perfect the story while waiting for the market research results from the company.

Time quickly passed as Edward worked on adapting his script and perfecting the next movie.

Before long, Dead Silence had completed its first week at the box office.

"Boss! Dead Silence has already made a billion at the box office!" Hayden said joyfully, and Edward smiled.

Seven days, one billion at the box office. Compared to the big blockbusters of Edward's past life, it was still lacking, but for this world, it was already a groundbreaking success.

During this time, Dead Silence had stayed on the trending search list. It may not have been number one every day, but it was consistently within the top ten.

Even Diantha called to congratulate Edward on the success of his first directorial project.

It could be said that Dead Silence had become the hottest movie in the league.

"Boss, but our company has also received some legal notices. Please take a look." Hayden respectfully handed over an envelope, and Edward curiously took it and opened it.

After a quick glance, Edward understood.

After all, Dead Silence was a horror film, and it exceeded the typical horror genre of this world. As a result, its level of fear surpassed what some people expected.

The result was that some viewers, frightened by the movie, ended up in the hospital.

Their families believed that the film was too scary, so they sent the legal notice to take the Ghost Film Company to court to resolve the dispute.

"Let the legal department handle all these notices," Edward said, passing the document back. He couldn't help but laugh and cry at the situation.

Watching horror films and getting scared to death was an old advertising tactic in his past life, but he never expected that in the world of Pokémon, people would actually be frightened into the hospital.

"Alright, Boss, also, the market research report for the other matter you requested has been received." Hayden handed over a USB stick, and Edward took it while glancing at Hayden.

This guy, although he was the former general manager of the company, now seemed like his personal secretary.

"Hayden, don't you ever get tired of this?" Edward asked as he plugged the USB into the computer.

Hayden still had other duties, but it seemed like he was always available no matter when Edward called.

"It doesn't bother me, Boss. Those other tasks are easy," Hayden smiled, showing his white teeth.

Edward couldn't help but twitch his lips.

Well, what do you know?

It turned out that even in the world of Pokémon, there were people working themselves to the bone.

If they work this hard, maybe I should give them a raise.

Edward thought to himself. Maybe it's time to hire a secretary.

After all, I can't keep having Hayden handle everything. If I didn't know better, I'd think Hayden was my secretary.

[Research Report on the Special Pokémon Version Movie in Kanto and Johto Regions]

Edward looked at the report on his computer and waved his hand for Hayden to leave. He sat quietly in his office, holding Q and reading the survey report.

The market research company was professional, and the data was detailed, but after looking through it, Edward felt a headache coming on.

He quickly flipped through the pages, skipping over the coordinate system, pie charts, and various complicated mathematical models, until he reached the conclusion.

[According to the research, the potential audience for the Pokémon special version movie is very small, with low profitability. It is not recommended to promote the Pokémon special movie in the Kanto and Johto regions.]

Edward silently closed the file and opened the next one for the Hoenn region. However, he found that the conclusion was much the same, and they weren't optimistic about the future of the Pokémon movie.

Only in the Kalos region, where the champion was an actor, was the evaluation a bit better, but overall, the consensus was the same: not recommended.

"Well, let's do a test. If we can't gather fear value from Pokémon after dark, then we'll give up," Edward sighed. He had read through the reports, and it seemed that most of the regions in the league didn't support the Pokémon movie.

If fear value couldn't be harvested, then there was no point in continuing production.
