Chris thought, "Tyranitar can fly...?" He was skeptical, but the concept lingered in his mind.
The idea stemmed from Tyranitar's use of Aerial Ace—the move's form hadn't changed. It still executed a swift strike that caught opponents off guard, making it a valuable surprise tactic in close combat. Chris mulled over its potential, particularly how Tyranitar might deploy it in battle.
After recalling Steelix to its Poké Ball, Chris noticed Tyranitar had plopped down onto the sandy ground. The Pokémon was piling sand into heaps, occasionally pausing to consume small clumps.
Chris found the sight unnerving. "Hey, hey, hey!" he called, patting Tyranitar's tough armor. "Pile up a castle, not... people!"
At the word "castle," Tyranitar tilted its head in confusion. Castle? What's that? Can I eat it? Her expression clearly conveyed her thoughts.
Chris sighed, lightly slapping his forehead. "Forget it. Just do your thing."
Back in his room, Chris turned his attention to his rewards. Among them was a secret technique: Secret Fly.
Secret Fly: Power 110. Effect: Doubles Flying speed.
It was a simple yet dominant upgrade. While the power increase from the standard Fly wasn't huge, the doubling of speed was a game-changer—especially in the real world. In battles, Flying Pokémon wouldn't just hit hard but could outmaneuver opponents with terrifying efficiency.
Chris opened his roster of Pokémon. Unfortunately, none of his current main team could learn Fly. It seemed not all Flying Pokémon were compatible with the move—Garchomp, for example, was grounded here.
"Looks like I need to bump Bagon up on my training schedule," Chris muttered to himself. Fly was too valuable to leave unused, and only his future Salamence, Hydreigon, or Dragonite could become reliable users of the move. Among those, Salamence's sheer presence made it Chris's top choice.
Still, Chris wasn't in a rush. Any Bagon he raised needed to be at least 5V or 6V—strong and worth the effort. "Rather have quality over quantity," he thought.
For now, Flygon would handle Fly duties. Its enhanced Flying speed made it a convenient choice for travel, especially for commuting to class.
Chris then examined the Flying Pokémon Training Guide from Winona. It detailed her experience with the Pokémon she'd used in battle, each accompanied by insights into their respective moves:
Swellow: Strategies for training "Aerial Ace" and "Brave Bird." Pelipper: Techniques to master "Tailwind" and "Air Slash." Altaria: Guidelines for honing "Hurricane" and "Roost."
Chris was impressed. Winona's combat prowess might not have been extraordinary, but her methods for developing strong Flying-type moves were ingenious. The notes on Brave Bird's training stood out—one of the most powerful Flying-type moves, comparable to Sky Attack in devastation.
"With her methods, even Aerial Ace could be adapted for Pokémon that don't normally learn it." Chris paused, picturing unlikely candidates like Lairon attempting aerial maneuvers. "Though that might take... a while."
He set the guide aside, deciding he wouldn't train those specific Pokémon just yet. While the techniques were intriguing, they didn't align with his current favorites.
Next on his agenda: after Fortree City Gym, he'd head toward Route 120.
Time was tight, so Chris quickly swapped out his team for Flygon and soared directly to Lavaridge Town, heading straight for Mt. Chimney. He needed to make the most of this month's refreshed quests and scrape together as many resources as possible before departing the Hoenn region.
This marked Chris's third run through the Mt. Chimney dungeon. His first encounter with Maxie, when his team wasn't as strong, had been challenging. But now, with Tyranitar on his side, the battle was a one-sided slaughter. Maxie's team was decimated, and Chris even had enough time to consider seeking out Archie of the Water Fleet. Unfortunately, Archie was nowhere to be found, leaving the quest incomplete.
Chris walked away with two rewards:
Skill TM: Teleport.
Teleport was a rare move, mostly limited to Psychic-type Pokémon. None of Chris's current lineup, aside from Gardevoir, could learn it. For now, he tossed the skill CD into his storage, planning to revisit it if a new Pokémon in his roster could make use of it in the future.
Treasure Pokémon Item: Mystic Water.
The enhanced Mystic Water offered a 40% boost to Water-type moves, improved control over water, and doubled the weight of water flows.
The first move that came to Chris's mind was Surf. Normally, Surf relied on the sheer force of crashing waves, not the water's weight itself. But doubling the weight would drastically increase its power, transforming the move into an even more devastating force.
Chris gave the Mystic Water to Greninja. The item would not only enhance Greninja's Water Shuriken attacks but also challenge the Pokémon to adapt. The increased weight meant Greninja would need to throw the shurikens with greater strength, prompting Chris to revise Greninja's training regimen to focus on physical power.
After organizing his spoils, Chris turned his attention to harvesting Berries. With plans to travel to the Johto region soon, Chris wanted to ensure no Berry resources went to waste in his absence. He harvested a wave, replanted the seeds, and calculated that by the time he returned in a month or two, the new crops would be ready.
Berry cultivation had been a lucrative venture for Chris, yielding over 400 million Pokédollars in the past two months alone. This financial buffer allowed him to maintain top-tier standards for his Pokémon. Most of his early expenses had been on treasure-grade Pokémon items, but with his collection nearing completion, his spending had significantly decreased.
These funds would not only sustain his Pokémon's growth but also potentially fund larger ventures, such as securing prime land or resources in Johto. Chris was confident that by the time he returned from Johto, his efforts in both regions would bear significant fruit.
"Perhaps even some untapped areas in Johto will have been developed by then," Chris mused as he strategized his next steps.
