The elder's house stood at the entrance of the village. As Sato descended with the help of his Golbat, the elder—sporting heavy dark circles under his eyes—immediately emerged from his home.
Accompanying him were three Mightyenas and over a dozen Poochyenas.
"It seems you've been waiting for me, sir. Don't worry, since I've promised you, I'll get it done," Sato assured, stepping forward after signaling Golbat to let him down. He spoke earnestly as he stood before the elder.
"That's not it, young man," the elder waved dismissively.
"You mentioned yesterday you were heading to the Poochyena Forest to catch a Mightyena, but I had advised you against it. Our village, White River, has its own Mightyenas and Poochyenas. You can choose one here. I've personally trained them, and they're far stronger than those used by Team Magma's grunts. Oh, and I've prepared a speedboat for you to take to Route 122. It'll save you more time," he said, emphasizing the phrase "save more time" with notable gravity.
Sato silently acknowledged the elder's thoughtfulness. Without wasting words, he activated his system's scan function to assess the Mightyenas and Poochyenas before him.
A thorough evaluation revealed that the elder's claims were no exaggeration. The Pokémon had indeed undergone rigorous training, boasting far more advanced move sets than wild Mightyenas. This bespoke the elder's specialized training methods.
Among them, the most exceptional was a Poochyena with a rare purple-tier aptitude.
The elder clearly recognized her potential, as she stood out noticeably from her siblings. She was larger, more robust, and had a broader range of moves. Most strikingly, her level was an impressive 25, towering over the others.
Additionally, Sato noticed an anomaly—her eye color. Unlike the black pupils typical of her species, this Poochyena's pupils were gray, a detail subtle enough to escape casual observation.
"I didn't notice yesterday that her eyes were gray. This Poochyena is different," Sato mused, observing the Pokémon, who was peeking at him from behind a Mightyena.
He recalled reading in The Grimoire of Dark Spirits about a unique type of Poochyena with gray pupils. According to the text, such Poochyenas were highly intelligent, often destined to become alpha leaders of their packs.
Their special eyes granted them the ability to see through illusions created by Ghost-type Pokémon and detect hidden Ghost-types.
Remarkably, these Poochyenas could sense Ghost-types within a hundred meters, rendering them virtually undetectable. Moreover, they could attack Ghost-types using Normal-type moves without requiring abilities like Odor Sleuth or Foresight.

The data showcased the elder's meticulous efforts in raising her, with numerous advanced moves painstakingly taught to her.
"I'll take the Poochyena with gray pupils," Sato declared without hesitation.
The elder sighed deeply but smiled. "I see you did your homework with The Grimoire of Dark Spirits. This little one is my treasure. I intended to let her mature a bit more, but since you've chosen her, I'll lend her to you. Just make sure you don't lose her—she's meant for my granddaughter," he added wistfully, leading the reluctant Pokémon to Sato.
"Don't worry, sir. I'll only borrow her briefly and return her soon," Sato replied with a reassuring smile.
The Poochyena, though boasting a timid ability, had a proud and fierce disposition. She bared her teeth at Sato, clearly displeased with him. Were it not for the elder's presence, she might have attacked outright.
"She's a feisty one. If you want to take her, you'll need to earn her respect. Battle her, and only if you defeat her will she submit," the elder suggested, stroking his beard with a sly grin.
"That's fair. Come out, Swampert! Have a sparring match with her, but be gentle—she's a lady, after all," Sato said with a chuckle, releasing Swampert from its PokéBall.
Just a few minutes later, Sato was aboard the elder's speedboat with the now-docile Poochyena curled up by his side. The Pokémon had quickly submitted after experiencing Swampert's overwhelming strength.
Poochyenas and Mightyenas, by nature, recognized and followed those stronger than themselves. Once they pledged loyalty, they remained steadfast and unwavering.
Sato had already removed the Everstone necklace from her neck. The battles ahead would require her full potential, and evolving into Mightyena was the first step. At Level 25, she was well past the threshold for evolution.
Though unsure why the elder had delayed it, Sato decided the time had come, silently apologizing to the elder in his mind.
The speedboat sped downstream, and before long, Sato spotted the towering lighthouse marking the pier on Route 122's shoreline.
Instead of docking at the pier, Sato stopped the boat roughly a kilometer away from the sea's mouth. Concealing the vessel with branches and dry grass, he proceeded on foot toward the pier.
The journey was eerily quiet, with no sign of travelers—only wild Pokémon, mostly Poochyenas and Mightyenas, seeking early meals.
After fending off the wild Pokémon with minimal effort, Sato arrived at the pier, only to find it deserted. The once-bustling area was now eerily empty, with every docked boat violently destroyed.
