Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Preemptive Strike, Skorupi!
A clearing in the forest.
A young trainer stood amidst the tall trees, directing a fierce battle between the two Pokémon—a red, armored figure clashing against a sleek, purple opponent.
The red Pokémon Scizor, was a Bug/Steel type, its body encased in crimson armor, with two pairs of translucent wings on its back and powerful pincers for hands. Its opponent was a Skorupi, a Poison/Dark type known for its scorpion-like tail ending in a formidable claw. This Skorupi was larger than most of its kind and clearly a standout among its species.
When Paul arrived at the scene with his Pokémon, he quickly noticed the intense battle between the two. It was evident that the Skorupi was the target he had been seeking.
Paul frowned slightly, sliding his hands into his pockets as he stood off to the side, observing quietly.
Capturing Pokémon had an unspoken rule: first come, first serve.
Since he had arrived late, the opportunity to battle and capture the Skorupi was no longer his. He could only watch as the battle unfolded.
On the battlefield, Scizor and Skorupi were locked in a heated exchange. While Skorupi's poison was potent, Scizor's Steel typing rendered it immune to Poison-type attacks. Even Pokémon with the Corrosion ability could only inflict status effects like poisoning; their Poison-type moves would still be nullified by Steel-types. Skorupi clearly lacked such an ability, giving Scizor a distinct advantage.
Using its typing and higher level to its favor, Scizor gradually gained the upper hand. However, Skorupi was no pushover. It moved with incredible agility, using its Dig move to evade and counter Scizor's attacks, making the battle an intense tug-of-war.
After an extended period of stalemate, Skorupi finally resurfaced from a distant spot on the battlefield.
"Scizor, Bullet Punch!" The young trainer commanded, seizing the opening.
Scizor shot forward like a red lightning bolt, its metallic fists gleaming as it delivered a rapid and powerful strike aimed directly at Skorupi.
"Draaah!"
Skorupi barely managed to react, raising its pincers defensively to block the blow. Its body trembled slightly, but it held its ground, refusing to retreat even a single step.
"Impossible!" The trainer gasped, shocked that Bullet Punch hadn't landed as intended. A sinking feeling crept into his mind as he shouted desperately, "Scizor, dodge! Quickly!"
Scizor instinctively tried to retreat, but Skorupi moved faster.
"Draah!"
In a flash, Skorupi's tail lashed out, its white stinger glowing ominously as it hooked onto Scizor's arm. With a powerful spin, Skorupi flung Scizor into the air before following up with a devastating Fell Stinger, landing two sharp strikes on Scizor's neck.
"Scizoooor!"
Scizor's body stiffened as it let out a distorted cry of pain, collapsing to the ground with its energy nearly depleted. Skorupi released its grip, landing gracefully on the ground.
"No!!!" The trainer shouted in despair as Skorupi's stinger emitted a green glow, delivering the final blow to Scizor. The Bug/Steel type fell, fainted.
At that moment, Skorupi was bathed in a peculiar white light—its Fell Stinger ability triggered a massive increase in its attack power.
"You did great, Scizor. Return!" The trainer recalled his Pokémon, sending out a Heracross as his next combatant.
Paul, watching from the sidelines, shook his head slightly.
Why had Skorupi suddenly gained the upper hand against Scizor?
Was it Skorupi's speed?
No. It was the strength it had built up. Skorupi had spent all that time underground not fleeing, but likely using moves like Hone Claws to amplify its attack and accuracy.
When it finally emerged, Skorupi chose to end the fight with Fell Stinger, maximizing its power even further. Its tactical awareness was sharp, outclassing both the young trainer and his Scizor, who had wasted time standing idle instead of using moves like Swords Dance, Iron Defense, or Agility to prepare.
With Scizor defeated, the trainer's Heracross was the next victim. Even with type advantages, it couldn't withstand Skorupi's overwhelming strength. After enduring a Pin Missile barrage followed by a toxic Poison Fang, Heracross fell swiftly.
The trainer sent out Pokémon after Pokémon, but the outcome was the same.
Pinsir? Taken down in two moves.
Beedrill? Lasted slightly longer, but succumbed to Skorupi's relentless attacks.
Beautifly? Tried to stall with Stun Spore, but Skorupi's Pin Missile eliminated it in moments.
In less than five minutes, the trainer's team was utterly defeated, leaving him fuming with frustration. Skorupi, on the other hand, seemed almost amused, its gaze now fixed on Paul.
"Drah!"
Skorupi gestured with its claw, challenging Paul to battle.
Paul remained calm. In real life unlike games, stat boosts didn't reset when a Pokémon entered a new battle. Skorupi's attack and accuracy were still maxed out, making it nearly impossible to evade its moves.
The safest option would be to follow Skorupi, wait for its boosts to wear off, and then battle when the odds were more favorable.
But Paul wasn't the type to back down.
He considered his options:
Ursaring, equipped with a Flame Orb, could activate Guts for a massive power boost. With a single Bulk Up, Ursaring might match Skorupi's overwhelming strength.
Alternatively, Gardevoir, though wary of Skorupi's power, had a clear type advantage. Its Psychic typing countered Skorupi's Poison/Bug combo, and its Hypnosis move could turn the tide.
Feeling Paul's calculating gaze, Gardevoir shivered.
It hadn't forgiven Paul for his earlier behavior, and the sight of Skorupi's terrifying strength didn't help. One thing was clear: if Gardevoir had to fight, it wouldn't be painless.
