"The final evolution of Geodude? Its strength has reached the elite level. Fortunately, Flint didn't bring out his strongest Pokémon," Robert muttered as he analyzed Rhydon's information, feeling a slight sense of relief.
Although Robert had no fear of Flint, he wasn't eager to fight a Gym-level Pokémon. His strongest Pokémon had only recently reached elite intermediate or possibly elite advanced levels. After rigorous battles and training in Evergreen Forest, both Charmeleon and Pidgeot had grown significantly stronger. They could now take on elite peak-level opponents, but facing a true Gym-level Pokémon was still a daunting task.
Pokémon battles weren't determined by level alone. Aside from attributes, factors like strategy, experience, and adaptability played crucial roles. A Pokémon with a significantly higher level could still lose if its opponent outmaneuvered it in battle.
Of course, there were rare exceptions, such as the existence of Mega Evolution Stones, but those were extremely uncommon. In the Kanto region, few trainers had access to such power, making them more of an anomaly than a regular advantage.
Even though Robert had his own secret weapons, he had no intention of using them just for a Gym Challenge. It was better to keep them hidden for now, saving them for more critical battles in the future.
"Charmeleon, how are you feeling? Do you want to continue fighting?" Robert asked, even though he knew Charmeleon hadn't exerted much energy in the previous battle.
"Ahhh!" Charmeleon thumped his chest with a confident expression. The last fight had been far too easy for him, barely costing him any stamina.
"You're really fired up, huh?" Robert chuckled. "Alright, Flint, let's see what you've got."
Flint grinned. "Rhydon, show them what we're made of!"
"Takashi!" Rhydon let out a powerful roar, its eyes locking onto Charmeleon with fierce intensity.
"Interesting," Robert mused. "Charmeleon, let's start with Ember!"
"Ahhh!" Charmeleon took a deep breath and spat out a series of small orange flames aimed directly at Rhydon.
"Rhydon, use Rock Blast to block the Ember, then follow up with Rollout!" Flint commanded.
He had already witnessed the power of Charmeleon's Ember attack in the previous battle and knew better than to take it head-on. Given Rhydon's massive size, dodging was out of the question, leaving only one option—countering it directly.
Rhydon stomped the ground, causing several rocks to rise into the air before launching them toward the incoming Ember. The moment the flames and rocks collided, a loud explosion erupted, sending smoke and dust billowing across the battlefield.
Robert squinted through the smoke. "He blocked it? Well, that's to be expected. Rhydon isn't Geodude. In that case… Charmeleon, let's kick it up a notch—use Flamethrower!"
Flint chuckled. "Kid, I've been around long enough to know Charmeleon doesn't learn Flamethrower so soon after evolving. It takes days, sometimes weeks—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Charmeleon took another deep breath and unleashed a powerful jet of fire, much larger and more intense than Ember. The flames rushed toward Rhydon at an incredible speed.
Flint's eyes widened. "What?! Impossible! That's not a beginner's Flamethrower—it's too strong! Rhydon, use Harden to endure it!"
He could hardly believe what he was seeing. From his experience as a seasoned Gym Leader, he knew that newly evolved Charmeleons needed extensive training before mastering Flamethrower. Yet, not only had Robert's Charmeleon learned it in an impossibly short time, but the attack's power was also far beyond what was expected.
If Charmeleon had used Metal Claw or another predictable move after evolving, Flint wouldn't have been surprised. But this? This was on a different level entirely.
"Takashi!" Rhydon growled, equally shocked but following orders. It immediately used Harden, bracing itself as the fiery onslaught slammed into its body.
The intense flames engulfed Rhydon, causing a massive explosion upon impact. Smoke filled the battlefield once again, shrouding Rhydon in a dense, burning mist. Flint anxiously scanned the field, calling out, "Rhydon! Are you okay?"
"Takashi…" Rhydon's strained voice emerged from the smoke, signaling that it was still standing, though clearly in pain.
Despite its massive endurance and defensive prowess as a Rock-type Pokémon, Rhydon couldn't simply shrug off such a powerful attack. If its total health had been over 200 points, the Flamethrower's base power of 90—combined with the 20% boost from Charcoal—had already cut Rhydon's stamina nearly in half.
Flint clenched his fists. "Damn… One more hit like that, and it's over."
Robert smirked. "Not bad. But can Rhydon handle another?"
Flint knew he had to act fast. "Rhydon, don't give him the chance! Use Magnitude!"
Rhydon slammed the ground, causing tremors to ripple across the battlefield. The ground beneath Charmeleon shook violently, threatening to throw him off balance.
Robert frowned. "Jump and use Flamethrower mid-air!"
Charmeleon quickly leaped into the air, avoiding the worst of the tremors before launching another scorching Flamethrower straight down at Rhydon.
The flames struck their target directly, creating another explosion that sent debris flying in all directions. As the smoke cleared, Rhydon was revealed, standing shakily with deep burn marks covering its rocky hide.
"Takashi…" Rhydon groaned before collapsing with a loud thud, unable to continue.
The referee raised his hand. "Rhydon is unable to battle. Charmeleon wins!"
A grin spread across Robert's face. "That's another one down."
Flint sighed but smiled. "You're full of surprises, kid. I didn't expect to see a Charmeleon this powerful at your level. You've got talent."
Robert nodded. "Thanks. But I know we're not done yet."
Flint chuckled. "No, we're not. Let's keep this going!"
With Rhydon defeated, the battle was far from over. Robert knew that Flint still had more tricks up his sleeve. But with Charmeleon's determination and growing strength, he was confident they could take on whatever came next.
The Gym battle was heating up, and Robert was ready for the challenge. This was just the beginning.
