Chapter 313: Chapter Three Hundred Thirteen: The Truth
Although many people did not care much about the public execution, no one was not curious about those rewards; they also wanted to know what kind of rewards the people who had participated in resisting the Zombie Tide would get.
So, for a time, the lecture venue became fully packed, with people standing even in the back and along the aisles, and many others standing outside the door.
Su Jin and her group naturally received invitations too, their seats already arranged in the first and second rows at the front, and it was Xu Shi who had brought them over.
Jia Kaiji was pushed up in a very large iron cage.
Those who had attended lectures on Special Abilities knew that the cage was previously used to contain zombies; what on earth had this man done?
Apart from Jia Kaiji, dozens of people tied up tightly were brought up; Su Jin and the others did not recognize them and had never seen them before.
...The hall became exceptionally noisy—why were there so many people? It looked like something big had happened.
Ye Rongxin walked up with an expressionless face carrying a small projector; he didn’t say anything but instead played a surveillance video recording for everyone.
Those present watched the recording with great interest; who would have thought there’d be recordings to watch in the Apocalypse?
However, the expressions of everyone in the room soon turned to shock; the recording showed several people opening the South Side Gate of the base by some means, followed by a swarm of zombies with gaping mouths flooding in.No wonder they had heard gunshots the night before last—it turned out that so many zombies had gotten into the base!
The recording showed that the zombies were quickly annihilated by fully armed Guard Squad Members; at the same time, the south gate was sealed off.
Only then did everyone breathe a sigh of relief.
Ye Rongxin froze the video at the frame showing the people who had opened the gate and then spoke, “These people attempted to open the base’s South Side Gate to let zombies in and create chaos; they have been captured on the spot.”
“Why? Why would anyone do such a thing?”
Someone in the audience couldn’t help asking, and immediately everyone became enraged; they fought desperately against the Zombie Tide outside, all to prevent a single zombie from getting into the base, yet these people had deliberately let in so many!
“These people are right here; let them tell everyone themselves!”
Ye Rongxin dragged a few of them out and gestured for them to speak.
Several people were pulled out shivering; just seeing Ye Rongxin made them terrified; the man was simply a devil!
Although there were no visible scars on their faces, in truth, they had been tortured by Ye Rongxin to the point of preferring death; it was all to make them confess, and though they might still be killed whether they spoke or not, they now only wished for death.
“All those things, it was all Jia Kaiji who made us do it; he wanted to use the chaos caused by the incoming zombies to have the rest of the people assassinate Liang Jiuhui, who had used up his Fire Element Ability!”
A man blurted out everything they were supposed to say in one breath, the others also let out a sigh of relief; that should be enough, right? The man wouldn’t torture them that way anymore, would he?
What?!
Why would Jia Kaiji do this? What deep hatred did he have with the Base Leader?
Ye Rongxin kicked the man beside him again, who continued, “Because Jia Kaiji promised us that once he became the Base Leader, he would let us enter the base’s management!”
What? Jia Kaiji wants to be the Base Leader?
“He even went to the shanty areas to distribute porridge before; could it be a frame-up?”
Somebody raised a conspiracy theory from below; what if those few people on the stage were confessing under duress?
Moreover, Jia Kaiji had not admitted to anything!
“You’re right! Whether it was before the Apocalypse or during it, we must always rely on evidence!”
A loud voice came from behind, and everyone recognized Li Haochu who stepped forward. Back in the refuge, it was always he who led people to protect everyone.
As soon as Li Haochu came out, many people already believed him halfway, as everyone had quite a bit of respect for this man who had once been a commander.
“Do you still remember the group of survivors who were transferred from the refuge and encountered a complete massacre by the zombie birds? Not only did thousands of survivors lose their lives in that incident, but the entire guard squad sent to protect them was also betrayed and killed!”
The words of Li Haochu caused the scene to fall silent for a moment, followed by everyone’s incredulous questions.
Betrayed and killed?
Wasn’t that incident caused by an accident?
At this moment, several photos appeared on the screen, which Su Jin and Lu Hao recognized. They were the ones taken during the escort mission when they encountered the zombie birds, the bodies hanging in the trees in those photos were enough to make people feel nauseated.
“Isn’t that the uniform of the cafeteria staff?”
Someone recognized the clothes on those bodies with a single glance.
“Correct! Way back in the refuge, several of our cafeteria workers were replaced, and the original ones were hung along the essential path of the survivor’s transfer, to attract the zombie birds!”
Li Haochu’s words were filled with rage as he pulled out several people dressed in cafeteria uniforms.
“It was these people who drugged the food of the guard squad members on that day! As a result, those guard squad members didn’t even have the strength to resist when they encountered the zombie birds!”
Li Haochu’s eyes reddened. Ah Feng and the others can finally clear their names!
Unfortunately, they will never see this.
After those people were pulled out, they kept their heads down, kneeling on the ground, too afraid to face the anger of the people in the hall.
“At the time, I didn’t think so much, I thought they were just some anesthetic, I didn’t expect that more than a thousand people would all die!”
One of the cafeteria workers started crying on the ground.
It was their fault for being momentarily possessed; although nobody discovered their actions afterward, they hadn’t been able to sleep well since that day. Jia Kaiji fulfilled the promise of rewards for them, but it was only a few bags of rice and supplies.
They had previously planned to leave the base, but not having ever killed zombies themselves, they dared not even step half outside the base gate. Just when they thought the incident had passed, they didn’t expect to be caught after all.
“Have you no conscience at all!”
Someone in the audience shouted angrily.
“I’m going to kill you!”
A woman even threw her Fire Element Ability towards the stage and, if not stopped, she would have rushed up there immediately.
Among those fallen warriors was the person she loved most!
She had always thought it was an accident, but never imagined they had been deliberately killed!
They had both agreed, once they both reached the base, they would let Commander Li act as a witness, and then they would have their marriage certification.
But these people did it just for a few bags of rice, just a few bags of rice!
Many other people were also crying out in anger; among those survivors were their relatives, their friends. When the truth was revealed, many found it impossible to accept.
Even more people were incomprehensible about the incident. In the apocalypse, it’s already exceedingly difficult for humans to survive, yet sometimes the human heart is scarier than the zombies themselves.
