Chapter 172: Attempting to Flee from Guilt
The next morning, as the sky began to brighten, Luo Zhiyong woke up and sat up, intending to get dressed and out of bed.
Fang Pingying was startled awake by him and asked in a low voice, "Is it daylight already?"
"Did I wake you?" Luo Zhiyong looked down at her with a concerned expression and said, "It's almost light out. I was thinking of getting up early and going to see that woman from yesterday, need to meet with Zhiming first to see what's really going on. If that woman had really kept him from coming home for so long, that would be illegal."
Fang Pingying nodded, "Alright, I'll go with you. It'd be best to see if we could settle this privately with that woman, to avoid getting the Police Station involved. It would be a big hassle if we actually had to go there."
"Then let's go together."
Knowing that, both got out of bed and started getting dressed.
The guesthouse wasn't far from their shop; just a few minutes' walk would get them there.
However, when they returned to the shop, Luo Zhiming, who was supposedly being detained, was now sitting in the bedroom of the shop.
He must have been frozen last night; now he was wrapped in a cotton quilt, sitting on Fang Xiu's bed, while Fang Xiu herself sat with a grim face on the opposite bed that belonged to Hong Lan.
Hong Lan was in the kitchen preparing something for Luo Zhiming to eat. Seeing Fang Pingying and the other return, she immediately called out with a surprised and delighted face, "Sister-in-law, you're back just in time. I was just saying I'd go to the guesthouse to tell you that Second Brother is back."
Luo Zhiyong nodded and walked over with a grim face to ask Luo Zhiming, "How did you come back? What did that woman say?"
"She didn't really say anything; I just told her I didn't have any money, and even if she detained me there, it would be pointless," Luo Zhiming said, moving a bit further into the bed and speaking softly as he noticed Luo Zhiyong's displeased expression, "Plus, I scared her by saying my eldest brother is in the military, and if they kept me for too long, it could mean trouble for them."
"Was it really that easy to resolve the situation?" Fang Pingying felt something was off about Luo Zhiming's complexion, and considering that the woman didn't gain any advantage, could it be true she just detained him for fun?
Luo Zhiming hemmed and hawed without answering, while Fang Xiu glared at Fang Pingying with irritation and said, "What else did you expect? That she had to report to the police and have Zhiming detained to be satisfied?"
"It's better if there's no trouble." Seeing their reaction, Fang Pingying grew even more suspicious, but since she couldn't get a straight answer right now, she pretended to believe them and probed deliberately, "So what's your plan now? Are you going to keep staying in the provincial city?"
Luo Zhiming and Fang Xiu exchanged a glance and didn't say anything.
Fang Xiu took over the conversation, "With such a big incident, we don't plan to stay in the provincial city any longer. Once Zhiming is done eating, I'll go with him to buy tickets and see when we can leave today."
Fang Pingying instinctively felt something was amiss with how easily Fang Xiu agreed to go back, and she vaguely sensed that the story of Luo Zhiming being released by the woman wasn't that simple.
If Luo Zhiming was truly that persuasive, or if the woman was that easily scared by him, why did she detain him in the first place? Was it really just a joke?
Fang Pingying was worried that the couple was up to something, and that they would leave the mess behind for her and Luo Zhiyong to deal with once they were gone.

But in front of the two of them, Fang Pingying couldn't voice her suspicions, and merely nodded slightly.
Then she called Luo Zhiyong to the front of the store and asked him in a low voice, "What do you think about this matter? Do you really believe that woman would so easily let Zhiming go just like that?"
"What are you suspecting?" Luo Zhiyong could also tell that there was something not quite right with the couple.
Fang Pingying glanced towards their house and said softly, "I'm afraid he didn't sort things out on that end, or perhaps he made some promise to that woman. He's planning to run off first, and then the two of them would escape back home, no longer caring about what happens afterward."
Luo Zhiyong felt that Fang Pingying's analysis made some sense, but also found it somewhat illogical, "That can't be right, that woman is no fool. If she was willing to let him go, she would have anticipated he might try to run away."
Fang Pingying voiced her worries, "So, what I'm actually concerned about is whether Luo Zhiming told that woman something about your military service, giving her some assurance, making her think that he might run, but she can't escape the temple. That's why she released him so readily."
"That's a possibility." Luo Zhiyong's face turned cold upon hearing this, and he turned to go inside the house, "I'm going to ask him right now."
Fang Pingying quickly grabbed him, "If he really would tell, he would've done so just now. I reckon he'd rather die than admit it now."
"Don't worry. As long as Fang Xiu isn't by his side, I can get the truth out of him," Luo Zhiyong whispered.
Fang Pingying shook her head at her and pointed towards the house, "What if you don't get anything out of him and they find out we're suspicious? They'll just run off home even faster."
"If he dares to leave me with these problems and escapes, I'll break his legs," Luo Zhiyong said grimly, his face ashen at the thought of Luo Zhiming leaving all their troubles behind, "Besides, once he's back home, you think I won't be able to find him?"
"Let it be; you better not ask. How about when you return to the unit you call Huang Lin for help, go make some inquiries about that woman at the lumber mill, and see where she lives. Pay a visit to her and see what she has to say," Fang Pingying, seeing his rage even before he'd questioned anything and fearing he might become violent if he did ask, suggested,
"If Luo Zhiming really promised her something, she'll definitely spill the beans as soon as she sees you. If not, we can be at ease knowing there's nothing wrong, and let them do whatever work they want to do wherever they want from now on. We're done dealing with it. Really, this time meddling has only brought trouble."
"That could work," Luo Zhiyong nodded, "Then I'll make a trip back to the unit and call Huang Lin. Once everything's clear, we'll come together." Keep us going by reading on MV_LEM_PYR.
Fang Pingying nodded and instructed him, "Alright, if it turns out to be nothing, also give Juzi a call and invite her over for lunch. It's been a while since the couple saw each other."
Luo Zhiyong agreed, and without even eating breakfast, he left for the unit.
Meanwhile, Luo Honglan had made noodles in the morning and, as instructed by Fang Xiu, even poached two eggs for Zhiming to calm his nerves.
After breakfast, Fang Xiu and Luo Zhiming didn't rest even for a moment, saying they needed to go to the train station to buy tickets. Fang Pingying stopped them, "I've been thinking, I'll be quite busy at the store in the coming days. Fang Xiu, you can help me out here for a few more days. Besides, even if you really need to go back, Zhiming, you should at least notify your boss, and you've also worked half a month. There might be over ten yuan in wages waiting for you."
"That's true, I still have wages," Luo Zhiming perked up at the prospect of money and immediately turned around to discuss with Fang Xiu, "Xiu'er, let's postpone our return by a few days. I'm going to the lumber mill to get this month's wages."
Fang Xiu, who usually lit up at the mention of money, hesitated for a long time before instructing Luo Zhiming, "Alright, go and come back quickly, don't delay. We'll try to leave today."
Fang Xiu acting this way only made Fang Pingying more suspicious that the couple intended to run from the law and leave them to deal with the mess. (To be continued.
