Chapter 428: Chapter 428: The Pinnacle and the Endgame
??
The deafening noises reverberating through the battlefield, coupled with the distinctive metallic battle cries, initially left the mobile infantry and assault troops—sergeant included—in a state of confusion.
!
However, moments later, they quickly realized the truth: those streaks of light that had descended from the heavens, like meteors, were undoubtedly drop pods deployed by the Imperial fleet.
And the source of the metallic battle cries? They were the so-called "iron cans" described by the Navy!
The resounding cries, as if a war drum were being struck, inspired and reinvigorated every soldier's fighting spirit, dispelling their earlier confusion.
"Hold your positions and keep firing!" the sergeant barked decisively.
He immediately made his way to the other side of the seventh-floor fire point, intent on observing the "iron cans" up close and gathering more information and guidance from their actions.
"Sir! Yes, sir!"
The soldiers' response was loud and thunderous, their voices carrying newfound determination.
Now aware that reinforcements had landed in the capital city, their morale soared. No longer worrying about conserving ammunition, they unleashed their firepower with renewed ferocity against the swarming bugs outside.
The cacophony of firearms echoed as one, creating a harsh symphony that obliterated any lingering fear or despair. The soldiers poured out their frustration and anger into their relentless assault.
In an instant, the bug tide—momentarily stymied by the angelic intervention—was once again torn apart by the intense barrage. The sheer volume of bullets, grenades, and cannon fire turned the streets into a grotesque slaughterhouse of flying limbs and blood. Bug carcasses piled up in the chaos, leaving the streets an unrecognizable wasteland.
Meanwhile, the sergeant reached the far side of the fire point. Using the vision enhancement systems of his helmet and personal equipment, he focused on the intersection at the far end of the street.
Sure enough, he spotted a massive drop pod standing firmly at the crossroads.
The pod's base was rooted into the pavement, designed with the stability of a fortress in mind. Its doors were fully open, resembling the petals of a blooming flower, revealing both solemnity and majesty with the engraved Chinese characters and the insignia of the Blood Angels Legion.
Clang—Clang Clang—!
Inside the pod, mounted high-caliber bolt cannons fired with rhythmic precision, launching explosive bolts into the surrounding horde.
Even the sound of the projectiles slicing through the air carried a cadence that stirred the heart, and each bolt seemed imbued with a devastating force of destruction.
And indeed, it was.
Pfft—Pfft—!!
Warrior bugs and tiger bugs, frantically charging toward the pod, had no time to react before they were struck directly by the bolts. Their bodies were blown apart, limbs flying through the air as their insectoid screeches were drowned out by the roar of explosions.
The explosive bolts triggered small-scale metallic-hydrogen detonations, showcasing a startling "screen-clearing" effect. Bugs caught in the epicenter were instantly "vaporized" or "atomized," leaving no trace.
Those unlucky enough to be caught in the blast radius but not the core were burned and charred alive.
Thick plumes of smoke mixed with the acrid stench of scorched flesh filled the air, creating an overpowering and nauseating odor that hung over the battlefield.
The pod's automated bolt cannons alone wreaked havoc on the bugs, achieving results the bugs could not hope to counter. But the true nightmare for the swarm came with the six Blood Angels who emerged from the pod.
Clad in Titan IV power armor, the six Blood Angels wasted no time. The moment they exited the drop pod, they secured the intersection with unwavering confidence.
"Die! DIE!"
"For the Father!"
"For the Emperor!"
Clang! Clang! Clang!
The distinct metallic battle cries of the Astartes intertwined with the sound of their bolters, creating a symphony of destruction.
Their presence was like that of divine warriors descending from the heavens. The bugs, relentless and fearless by nature, hesitated for the first time, seemingly recognizing the insurmountable threat before them.
Three riflemen, armed with explosive bolt rifles, and a heavy gunner wielding a massive bolt cannon, unleashed unrelenting streams of fire. Hundreds of bolts rained down around them, tearing through the bug horde like a hurricane of death.
The continuous gunfire echoed in the streets, a grim melody of annihilation.
Ri~ Zzoooom————!!
Simultaneously, another heavy gunner, dual-wielding a smaller-caliber plasma cannon, locked onto the densest part of the bug swarm. With precision, he fired a plasma blast the size of a "tin can" directly into the horde.
The brilliant plasma orb streaked through the air like the Emperor's messenger of death, accompanied by a piercing whine as it hurtled toward its target.
Pfft—Pfft—!!
The instant the plasma projectile hit the bugs, it unleashed devastation, ripping through the swarm and scattering their bodies like ash in the wind.
Boom————!!!
A deafening explosion followed. Blue plasma fire burst forth like a radiant flower, consuming everything in its vicinity. The wave of heat and energy incinerated the bugs, leaving behind only charred remains. The distant sergeant, watching from his vantage point, could only marvel at what could be described as the ultimate "bug barbecue."
Leading the squad was the team captain, who had charged far ahead of his brothers.
"Kill! Kill! KILL!!"
His metallic roar echoed across the streets, rallying his squad and striking terror into the swarm.
His golden helmet gleamed under the light of the flames, making him appear larger than life, drawing attention to his commanding presence.
In his left hand, he wielded an explosive bolt pistol. In his right, he held a power sword, its blade crackling with azure plasma fields. With these weapons, he cut a bloody path down the street. Bugs seemed to lose their will to fight in his presence, and not a single one dared approach him.
However, the battlefield is ever-changing.
Clang—Clang—Click!
Within seconds, his bolt pistol ran out of ammunition.
Hiss—!
A tiger bug, seizing the opportunity, roared and lunged at him.
But the captain didn't even spare it a glance. His helmet's visor remained focused on his sword, completely ignoring the approaching threat.
With a casual flick of his left hand—
Pfftch————!!!
The tiger bug, a creature that ordinary Morita rifles struggled to kill, was swatted aside as though it were a mere insect.
Thud! Thud… Crash!
The bug's massive body, weighing over a ton, smashed into several of its own kind before landing on its back in the middle of the street, its legs flailing helplessly.
Hiss! Hiss!!
Dazed from the blow, the tiger bug struggled to get back on its feet.
But the captain gave it no chance.
Stomp. Stomp—Sliiice————!!
He holstered his empty pistol on his thigh armor, freeing both hands to grip his power sword. With deliberate steps, he advanced and, with a swift slash, cleaved the tiger bug in two.
The searing cut left its bisected body oozing green blood, the stench of scorched flesh filling the air as the halves of the bug convulsed on the ground.
The captain continued his lone charge into the swarm, his movements like a flash of red and gold lightning on the battlefield.
With every swing of his sword, he exuded power and precision, turning the chaos into a deadly yet elegant dance. His form, posture, and grace mirrored that of their "Father," Sanguinius.
The Blood Angels squad employed a fluid and adaptable combat strategy, forgoing rigid formations. Against the Arachi Swarm, they had no need for intricate tactics or elaborate maneuvers.
Their sheer firepower and overwhelming might were enough to annihilate the enemy.
Or, as the Legion often joked, the best strategy against bugs was to "charge like wolves"—no overthinking required.
Despite their mocking tone, this straightforward approach proved devastating against the Arachi Swarm. Even the tank bugs, which the biological fleet had deployed in significant numbers in an attempt to establish a ground presence, were no match for the Blood Angels.
These massive creatures, while intimidating with their size and flame-spewing organs, were little more than moving targets to the Astartes. Explosive bolts and plasma weapons made short work of them.
Unless a particularly reckless Blood Angel decided to take one on with a chainsword or power sword, tank bugs posed no real threat.
As for the tiger bugs and warrior bugs, their speed and numbers were similarly inconsequential. No matter how fiercely they charged or how loudly they roared, the Blood Angels advanced unperturbed, as though the battlefield were merely another training exercise.
They conserved no effort, only physical stamina, as they systematically cleared the streets.
Adding to their efficiency, the Blood Angels never worried about running out of ammunition.
High above the battlefield, modified Luna-class transport crafts circled the skies, monitoring the situation.
Whenever a squad ran low on supplies, the crafts would locate their coordinates and deploy small resupply pods. These pods contained explosive bolts, condensed power cells, grenades, and other necessary provisions.
This logistical support allowed the Blood Angels to maintain relentless firepower, suppressing and obliterating the swarm wherever they moved, turning each district into a blazing battlefield.
In mere moments, this six-man squad had secured the intersection as their central point and fully cleared the surrounding streets, eliminating close to ten thousand bugs in the process.
And that wasn't all.
From a bird's-eye view, it became evident that nearly every major intersection where the bug swarms were most concentrated had an Astartes-exclusive drop pod standing tall.
This indicated that over 600 Blood Angels had already been successfully deployed across the capital city, each squad immediately working in tandem with the 30,000 mobile infantry and assault troops to relieve the pressure brought by the overwhelming bug tide.
Furthermore, with more drop pods descending every moment, the city soon welcomed over a thousand fully equipped Blood Angels from the 1st Company of the Blood Angels Legion.
To put this in perspective, the Blood Angels had only deployed approximately 4,000 fully grown Astartes to the "Starship Troopers" (14th Universe).
This meant that in the Battle of Campbell, one-fourth of their entire Legion was now engaged in this fight.
Sanguinius's arrival in this universe was not merely a show of force—it was part of his greater goal to consolidate and unite the entire galaxy under the banner of humanity. And against such a purpose, how could the Arachi Swarm, with its comparatively "thin" biological fleet, hope to hold off even a quarter of the Blood Angels' full might?
What's more, among the deployed forces within the capital city were not only the thousand-plus Blood Angels but also over 10,000 ODST Helljumpers (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers) fighting valiantly across different districts.
The ODSTs, though far inferior to the Astartes in individual combat capability, were no ordinary soldiers.
Each Helljumper had undergone injections of Inquis Serum, granting them enhanced reflexes, physical strength, and endurance. Their full-body exoskeletons allowed them to contend with enemies far beyond the capabilities of standard soldiers.
Against a single warrior bug or tiger bug, an ODST could easily emerge victorious. However, compared to the Blood Angels' godlike ability to weave through swarms as if untouched, the ODSTs lacked the same level of agility and finesse in chaotic battlefields.
Thus, their combat style leaned more toward tactical positioning, sustained firepower, and precision strikes to compensate for their lack of sheer brute force.
Still, as adrenaline-fueled battle maniacs, the ODSTs leveraged their Gauss rifles, heavy machine gunners, and combat mechs to mow down the bugs, leaving the enemy forces in a state of utter disarray.
If not for the Arachi bugs' natural resilience against single-soldier-level energy beams, the ODSTs' firepower would have been even more devastating.
"Team 1, advance! Team 2, cover the rear! Team 3, establish contact with local allies!"
"Yes, sir!"
With ODST commands echoing across the capital city streets, it felt as though the war itself had reached its climax.
"Hahaha! Die, you disgusting filth!"
"Suppress those damn bugs! Wipe them out completely!"
The Helljumpers' half-mad laughter and bloodthirsty battle cries mixed with the crisp execution of orders, intensifying the chaos of the battlefield.
The ODSTs deliberately cranked up their external helmet volumes to maximum, their shouts and laughter carrying far and wide. It was as if they were sending a message to the mobile infantry, assault troops, and Campbell civilians hiding in the buildings:
"Reinforcements are here! Don't be afraid!"
This fearless and borderline reckless attitude resonated deeply with Campbell's defenders. The soldiers and locals, who had been on the brink of despair, found themselves reinvigorated by the sight and sound of their imperial allies.
——
Meanwhile, back at the seventh-floor fire point in the office building:
"..."
The sergeant in charge stood in stunned silence as he watched the scene unfolding at the far end of the street.
He had just witnessed a squad of only six Blood Angels effortlessly clear an entire district of bugs. Their overwhelming strength and efficiency left him utterly dumbfounded.
The level of devastation caused by the Blood Angels was on par with the divine intervention of Sanguinius himself.
"'Iron cans'?!"
"This isn't an iron can... these are heaven's warriors under the command of a god!"
Before the sergeant could issue further orders or adjust the fire point's defensive deployment, his helmet's display pinged with new information.
Through his visor, he saw the skies above the city, where thousands of Pelican, Albatross, and Luna transports were piercing through the atmosphere unhindered.
This could mean only one thing: massive reinforcements were about to be deployed. These would include auxiliaries enhanced with Inquis Serum, as well as a variety of biological and mechanical war machines from the Blood Angels' arsenal.
It also meant that the Battle of Campbell had reached its decisive moment—and the outcome was no longer in doubt.
——
The battle was raging in full force, but across the city, the tide was unmistakably turning.
At every intersection, Astartes squads were systematically dismantling the bug tide. Streets that had been teeming with Arachi swarms were now littered with bug carcasses, the ground scorched and blackened by flames and plasma residue.
The ODSTs were equally relentless. While they lacked the overwhelming physical superiority of the Blood Angels, their precise fire support and well-coordinated maneuvers kept the bugs from regrouping.
And high above, the imperial fleet continued its orbital bombardment, hammering the biological fleet into submission. Every plasma bug or transport bug attempting to descend into the atmosphere was intercepted and annihilated by the high-energy beams of the Tears of Red and its accompanying ships.
The bugs' numbers, once seemingly endless, had been reduced to scattered pockets of resistance.
The capital city, which had been on the verge of total collapse, now stood as a bastion of human resilience and imperial might.
Victory was at hand.
——
At the heart of the city, Sanguinius soared above the western frontlines, his golden wings blazing as he led the final push to secure the region.
His presence was more than just a morale boost—it was a symbol, a rallying cry for all forces to fight harder, to push forward, and to reclaim their city.
Every swing of his spear, every strike of his blade, brought devastation to the enemy. The bugs, for all their relentless ferocity, had no answer to the overwhelming power of the Primarch and his forces.
In that moment, the soldiers of Campbell, the ODSTs, and the Blood Angels fought as one. Their unity, forged in the crucible of battle, represented the indomitable spirit of humanity.
And as the sun began to rise over the battered city, its first rays breaking through the smoky skies, one thing became clear:
The Battle of Campbell was over. The Arachi Swarm had been broken, their forces decimated by the combined might of the Blood Angels and the imperial fleet.
The capital city, though scarred and battered, had held the line.
And above it all, the golden figure of Sanguinius stood as a testament to humanity's triumph—a beacon of hope for the future to come.
