Chapter 19: How to Fight a Fire Cultivator Without Becoming a Roast Duck
BOOM!
A wave of heat slammed into Wang Li as Lin Ruoyan's fiery fist nearly took his head off.
He ducked just in time, the flames singing the tips of his hair.
"Are you trying to kill me?!" he shouted.
Lin Ruoyan laughed. "Oh, please! If I wanted to kill you, you'd already be ash."
That was not comforting.
Wang Li rolled to the side as another fireball exploded where he had just been standing.
His heart pounded. Lin Ruoyan's speed wasn't as ridiculous as Feng Yuling's, but she was relentless.
Her fire attacks had no blind spots.
Wang Li knew one thing for sure: if he kept dodging, he was going to lose.
He had to attack.
Step One to Beating a Fire Cultivator: Don't Let Them Control the Fight
Wang Li gritted his teeth and dashed forward.
Lin Ruoyan blinked. "Oh? Charging straight at me?"
Her palm ignited, flames twisting around her fingers.
"Burning Dragon Strike!"
A whip of fire lashed toward him.
Wang Li twisted his body, narrowly avoiding it—
Then he struck.
"Golden Serpent Slash!"
His wooden sword glowed with qi as it slashed toward Lin Ruoyan.
She blocked it with her bare hand.
Wang Li froze.
"…That's cheating," he muttered.
Lin Ruoyan grinned. "Nah. Just skill."
Then she kicked him.
BAM!
Wang Li flew backward, skidding across the dirt.
Mu Qingling gasped. "Wang Li!"
Wang Li groaned. He was seeing stars.
Lin Ruoyan walked toward him, cracking her knuckles. "Come on, Wang Li. I thought you wanted to win?"
Wang Li coughed. "I do."
"Then fight seriously."
Step Two to Beating a Fire Cultivator: Find Their Weakness
Wang Li took a deep breath.
If he kept fighting head-on, he was going to lose.
But fire techniques had one major weakness—
They burned qi too fast.
If he could last long enough, Lin Ruoyan would start slowing down.
Wang Li smirked. "Alright. Let's go, then."
Lin Ruoyan's eyes sparked with excitement.
Then they clashed again.
Wang Li moved faster, dodging her flames by the slimmest margins.
His sword became a blur, forcing her to block instead of attack.
Lin Ruoyan's smirk slowly faded.
Her attacks weren't hitting anymore.
Her flames were shrinking.
Wang Li grinned.
She was running out of qi.
Step Three to Beating a Fire Cultivator: Finish the Fight Before They Get Mad
Lin Ruoyan exhaled, wiping sweat from her brow.
"You really don't go down easy, huh?" she admitted.
Wang Li smirked. "I try my best."
Lin Ruoyan chuckled. "Well, that was fun. But I think—"
She raised a single finger.
A tiny flame danced at the tip.
"—I should stop holding back."
Wang Li's smile disappeared.
"…Wait."
BOOM!
The ground exploded.
A pillar of fire erupted from Lin Ruoyan's body.
Wang Li's eyes widened.
"THAT WASN'T YOUR FULL POWER?!"
Lin Ruoyan grinned. "Nope."
Wang Li turned to Mu Qingling and Feng Yuling.
"WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN ME?!"
Mu Qingling giggled. "It's more fun this way!"
Wang Li screamed internally.
Then Lin Ruoyan attacked.
And this time—
He had no choice but to go all out.
