Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Freed them
Kai blurred through the night, as nothing but a whisper of motion and shadow as he vamp-sped toward the outskirts of town. Draped across his shoulder was a limp body who was unconscious, bruised and very much undeserving of mercy Kai had showed him.
'Damned scumbag,' Kai thought bitterly, eyes narrowed against the cold wind. 'You got off easy. Could've just drained you dry and dumped you in a ditch, but no… I'm feeling generous today.'
He arrived at the docks which was quiet, fog-laced and looked seemly empty. In the middle of a barren concrete yard, he stopped and exhaled sharply. Then, concentrating before he muttered under his breath.
In a flicker of shimmering light, a warehouse rippled into existence.
Invisible until then, cloaked by an Invisique spell, an illusionary spell a speciality or the Gemini coven lineage it stood quietly, seemly abandoned. Which made it perfect for activities like this.
'And incredibly easy to cast,' Kai noted with faint amusement. 'Maybe I'll teach it to Julia next. Or maybe something fun... like a boundary spell perhaps. That'd keep the rats out or in depending on the use.'
He stepped into the warehouse. Six other bodies lay inside bound, unconscious, and eerily silent. Each one was a carefully selected piece in tonight's little performance.
Kai dropped the newest addition unceremoniously onto the concrete. The thud echoed.
"Scumbags," he muttered, brushing his hands off. "I'm doing you lot a favor. Most people I don't like don't get this far. They just bleed out and become nothing but a snack"
The man stirred with a groan. His eyes fluttered open, wild and confused. "What the hell…? Where am I? Who the hell are you?!"
Kai crouched beside him, his tone mock-gentle. "Well. I'm just the guy who saved another woman from getting raped last night by the despicable bile in front of me… I have to say tho there are a lot of your kind here in New York which I don't know is kinda surprising. Is it always like this here with people just going around and attempting to do unspeakable things to others?."
The man's eyes widened. Panic replaced confusion.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about—"
"Oh, don't do that," Kai said, the soft smile still on his lips. "I hate liars… bad ones I mean"
"What do you want?"
Kai stood, stretching lazily. "Oh, I want a lot of things. But right now? I need you for a little... experiment. Nothing lethal." He glanced back at the other bodies. "Well. Not at first."
The man began to squirm harder. "My friends will come looking for me, asshole. You're dead."
Kai snorted. "Your friends?" He snapped his fingers, releasing the enchanted sleep spell with a crackling pulse.
All six men began to stir.
Groaning, blinking into consciousness then quickly devolving into frantic panic as they realized they were bound and trapped.
Kai walked to the center of the room, hands behind his back like a teacher addressing a classroom.
"Children, Please May I have your attention?"
One of them a stockier guy with a voice louder than his common sense shouted, "I got rights, you freak! You can't do this!"
Kai appeared in front of him in a blur.
Before anyone could register the movement, his fangs sank deep into the man's neck.
The others screamed, One vomited and another fainted as the man's thrashing limbs stilled and his body slumped and lost consciousness but wasn't dead.
Kai pulled back, blood dripping from his chin, his eyes glowing bright and monstrous. Veins bulged under them like black lightning bolts across porcelain skin.
"So... does anyone else want to tell me about their rights?" His voice dripped with false charm.
The others shook their heads violently.
"Good." Kai smiled again sharp and sweet like cyanide. "Now then… I'm here to conduct a little test. Nothing fancy. Just a blend of two components. You're helping advance magical research, gentlemen. A noble cause."
With a gesture of his hand, seven small cups appeared in front of them, filled with thick red liquid. The Invisique that had hidden them dissolved.
"Drink," he said.
"What is it?" one of them a scrawny twenty-something asked, trembling.
Kai grinned. "Something that'll set you free."
The scrawny one downed it.
Kai tilted his head. "Hmm. Nothing… yet."
The others, fearing a worse fate, gulped theirs too.
As the last one finished, Kai clapped lightly. "There we are."
But before they could breathe relief, the first man his earlier victim began to stir again, groaning and tried holding his neck.
Then Kai moved.
In the blink of an eye, each man had his neck snapped before he could stand. One by one crack, crack, crack the sound echoed in brutal staccato across the warehouse.
Only one remained the very first. Still weak, still stunned.
He looked up in horror.
Kai crouched again, blood still trailing down the side of his mouth.
"Well then. I've freed them."
He smiled.
"From their lives, of course."
The last man screamed as Kai vamp-sped forward.
