Chapter 73: Building faster

Levi stood beneath the partly raised stone archway of what would soon be the village's front gate. Mist clung to the marshy earth as if reluctant to let the sun through. Men were working—slowly, perhaps, but they were working. And more had arrived. Word traveled fast. Word about coin traveled faster.

Jory found him before midday. His boots were soaked, and he had a grin that didn't match the weariness in his eyes. "Gran says you've finally gone mad," he announced.

Levi didn't turn. "Just now? Thought she noticed earlier."

"She thinks you're building a castle," Jory continued, watching the men haul stone like ants pulling teeth from the earth. "She asked if you plan to name it too."

Levi shook his head. "It already has a name. I'm not here to change that."

Jory squinted at the half-built wall. "Still... this'll take ages, won't it?"

Levi shrugged. "The houses and forges? Maybe. But not the wall. Not the street. That's the easy part."

Jory frowned. "Stones ain't easy. Not here. Nothing is."

Levi smiled faintly, eyes following the men working along the trench. "Well… who knows," he said. "Maybe with the right person, and the right hand, it will."

The two walked the edge of the rising wall, passing scaffolds and stone piles. The southern curve, still bare and waiting for mortar, showed the outline of the rear gate. Levi nodded to it in thought.

"Only two ways in," he said. "One forward, one back."

Jory gave him a sideways look. "You sound like a lord."

"I sound like someone who's tired of being caught off guard."

They stopped near a stack of planks where a forge would one day stand. Levi pulled out a small handful of swampberries—summoned when no one was watching. He offered some, and Jory took a few, chewing thoughtfully.

After a moment, Jory said, "You know people are making wagers."

Levi raised an eyebrow. "On what?"

"On how long it takes before it all breaks apart. Wall falling before the taverns open. Raiders showing up before winter. You vanishing before any of it's done."

Levi popped a berry into his mouth. "They'll lose their coin."

"You sure?"

"I'm sure enough to keep building."

Across the worksite, Ulrich's voice rose over the sound of chisels and hammers. Someone had miscut a stone, and a string of curses followed. Beyond the fog, gulls cried over distant waters. The village had no lords, no banners, no wealth—but it had hands. And now it had purpose.
