Chapter 5: Chapter Five - Liliya
I don't know how to feel about this... Liliya is still weaving flowers together to add to the ones already adorning the mare, completely ignoring me. She heard and saw me come in, but she didn't even greet me!
I thought maybe I could make a friend out of her, but this is off to a terrible start. What did I ever do to make her snub me like this? I've never even spoken to her; I've barely crossed paths with her.
On the other hand, I don't like that Aleko has stopped playing around with his sword and is glaring at me so angrily... It looks like he's ready to jump on me at any moment. Let me remind you, we're kids, so don't imagine anything weird... Well, I'm not exactly a kid anymore, but physically I am.
Might as well try to break the ice and start on a good note. Given this reception, I doubt we'll become best friends... but maybe we can at least be civil.
"Hello, my name is—" I started, only to be interrupted.
"We know who you are, Petrova! Get out of here! You're not welcome! Go bother someone else!" Aleko shouted, pointing his sword at me.
I keep telling myself he's just a six-year-old kid, but he's easily two heads taller than me, and the blade in his hands doesn't seem like a good sign. I have to admit, I'm not exactly eager to end up skewered. Why is he so mean?
I used to think my life as Erika Smith was horrible, but I'm starting to have doubts! Sure, I didn't have any friends back then, but at least most people talked to me normally... Okay, fine, they gossiped behind my back as soon as I wasn't around, but that's not the point!
There must be something wrong with me if, in two different lives and bodies, I can't seem to make any friends…
"Aleko! Mama said not to talk like that! It's not... um... emma... emible... I can't say it... Aleko, how do you say it, Molya te (please)?" Liliya asked in her small voice.
She's only three years old, and she already speaks so politely—it's adorable. She looks like a little doll with her long, braided brown hair and fair skin. There's no doubt she'll have many suitors when she grows up. Too bad she can't stand me.
"Amiable, Liliya. Sure, but I'm not going to be nice to someone like her!"
"Why can't I stay?" I timidly asked.
"Oleg told Tatko that Liliya and I aren't allowed to play with you because Liliya does magic! No one insults my sister, so go away!" Aleko shouted, tears in his eyes.
I understand better now why Liliya and Aleko don't want me to stay... Tatko, when you want something, you stop at nothing to get it. I can see where Katherine Pierce gets her stubbornness.
"I'm sorry Tatko said that to you and your parents... Excuse me." I finished, leaving the stable.
I headed toward the lake near the Dragonov house, making sure not to get lost. This is where I usually go when I think about my past life. Sometimes, I tell myself I should have been stronger emotionally. But now, it's too late for regrets. Erika Smith died alone in her room, having taken her own life...
I hope my uncle is doing well now, that he's finally able to swim again—his favorite sport alongside tennis. I wonder if he's found a boyfriend yet and managed to forget his stupid ex. Yes, my uncle is gay... so what!
As usual, I sat at the edge of the water, having taken off my shoes and stockings, and dipped my feet into the lake. The water was cold today. Summer was approaching, yet the water always stayed cold, no matter the season.
Lost in my dark thoughts, I didn't immediately notice the presence beside me—not until a voice asked what I was doing sitting all alone by the water. No need to say I jumped out of my skin from the surprise. Liliya found my reaction hilarious.
"I'm sorry... I thought you'd heard me coming... You didn't hurt yourself, did you?"
"No, don't worry... I'm tougher than I look!"
My response earned a smile from her. She does have a beautiful smile. One thing's for sure: she'll break plenty of hearts when she grows up!
"Why did you follow me? I thought you and your brother didn't want me around because of... you know what."
"Uh... yeah, that's true... I thought that what your Tatko said to my Tatko... you felt the same way too... I thought you didn't like me, so... I didn't want to like you either... but I didn't want to hurt your feelings... Aleko was too mean... what he said was too mean... I... I'm s-s-sorry..." She finished, crying.
(Note: It's normal for the dialogue to be written this way since Liliya is only three years old, and no three-year-old speaks like a diplomat.)
"It's okay, Liliya. Molya te, ne plachi! (Please, don't cry.)"
"Proshtavash li mi? (Do you forgive me?)"
"Yes, I didn't blame you at all... neither you nor Aleko."
"Then will you be my friend?"
"I'd like that very much!"
