Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse

Chapter 200: So Many Dishes

After the outsiders left, Li Yunjia invited Juan Ke and the other two families together with the girl who spoke up for them to breakfast.

At first they refused because they thought they would be intruding, but after repeated reassurances they finally decided to stay.

Uncle Li then went to the kitchen to prepare a few more dishes since he had only cooked enough for their family.

Therefore, the family and guests sat in the living room while waiting.

The fourteen year old girl was feeling uneasy and felt that she shouldn't be sitting down waiting to be ces as if she owned the place. She wanted to go into the kitchen and help.

However, she was stopped by Leng Pan.

"Don't go into the kitchen. That is uncle's territory and he doesn't like people intruding on it.

He thinks he is the best chef in the world and other people's hands would ruin his tasty creations.

So, better not go there."

"Panpan, I can hear you." Uncle Li's loud voice came from the kitchen.

"I didn't lie." Leng Pan shouted back and the family laughed.

This has become their daily way of communicating. They had to create a family atmosphere so that the apocalypse would not consume their familial bond.

When the visitors saw how the family was still bickering with no distinction between old and young as if they had never been touched by the apocalypse, they felt a lump in their throat.

Even though they still had their family members with them, things had changed because of the tension brought about by the dangers of the apocalypse, the scarcity of supplies, and the bitterness of life in general.

How they wished they could go back to the old days when civilization was all people had to worry about.

How they wished that they didn't have to fight with others for a bite of good. How they wished that all they had to worry about was which restaurant to celebrate their next family dinner.

However, life was different now. There was no longer celebrating family dinners. After all, if they didn't even have enough to eat, what was there to celebrate?

If they managed to get a couple of eggs and make egg noodles, they would feel as if they were having a feast. But what about before that, they took everything for granted.

They could even throw away some meat dishes because they were left overs. Now, they yearned for those left-overs.

But seeing how the Lu family interacted, they felt that there was still hope. All they had to do was change their mindset.

They should stop seeing the apocalypse as the end of their lives. Weren't they still alive? Why should they live as if they had already died?

Why did they have to feel as if they had no right to be happy anymore? As if life now only consisted of looking for food and eating sparingly?

Some things had to change.

This thought was reinforced when uncle Li served the dishes he had cooked on the table.

There was a spread of divine-smelling dishes on the table and one could not believe that this was a dining table in the apocalypse.

Ever since the night of the meteor shower, their families had started to limit the amount of food they ate everyday. This was because they didn't know how long they would be locked in the house before being able to go out and shop.

But then, the zombies appeared and the idea of shopping was out the window. Moreover, their food rationing became even worse. They got to a place where the whole family would mix one egg with water and make egg soup as their only way of getting protein.

Now, looking at the spread of dishes on the table that include several meat dishes and fresh vegetables, tears nearly fell from their eyes.

How could there still be people eating so much meat in one meal? Where did such fresh and fragrant vegetables come from?

They wanted so much to ask these questions, but thought that it was impolite.

Leng Pan seemed to understand their thoughts and volunteered information.

"If you lack meat and want some, we can show you the cold storage place where we got ours from.

We grew the vegetables ourselves. My aunt awakened a wood superpower and it can help in speeding up the growth of plants."

"That's very kind of you. We can find a place to find some meat, we would really appreciate it. This apocalypse came too suddenly and we didn't have much stock of meat at home.

We have also gone out to look for supplies around our community, but none of the convenience stores have meat.

So, we can only settle. But if you show us a place to get meat, then we will be very grateful." A man from one family expressed his gratitude.

"Alright, let's eat first before the food gets cold. We will talk about going to look for other supplies later. Everyone, don't be shy, dig in." Uncle Li encouraged everyone to eat and started piling rice in his bowl and his wife's bowl.

Like always, Lu Zhen followed suit and started serving his wife. He ladled soup for her and served her a bowl, then took a rice bowl and filled it with rice, vegetables, and Leng Pan's favorite meat dishes.

The visitors observed everything going on in this family and felt inspired.

Others may have felt jealous, but they chose to learn from this family instead. Their familial bond seemed to have become even stronger in the apocalypse instead of being duties by hardships.

This was worth learning and emulating.

Maybe they would live better lives that way.

The visitors, seeing how the family was so carefree, also let their guard down and enjoyed the first real meal in a long time.

They felt as if they had been reborn at the end of the breakfast feast.

"Thank you for your generosity." Juan Ke suddenly stood up and bowed to the Lu family members after they had finished eating.
