Ch. 110
Chapter 110: Spatial Rift
Top-tier apprentice wizard tools ranged from 5,000 to 10,000 Gold Surrel on the market, with a fairly wide price range. If it was a tool with limited uses, the price could be somewhat lower.
Just like the [Guardian’s Veil] that Richard Eva had borrowed from his family last time—it belonged to the category of top-tier apprentice wizard tools worth around 10,000 Gold Surrel. That price was something Janna absolutely could not afford at the moment.
"Hugh, are you saying all this because you want to take this mission?"
After listening to Hugh Stone’s remarks, a female apprentice sitting behind him couldn’t help but ask directly.
"Of course I’m taking this mission. A big one like this—there’s barely one a year."
After hearing Hugh Stone’s response, no one followed up.
After all, the Darksun Church was notoriously infamous. Even if their strength had been greatly diminished, no one would act rashly without fully assessing the risks.
"What about Blackbone Grove and Mist Tower?"
After another brief silence, Soro Flare, sitting in the corner, suddenly asked.
"Those guys are always eager for a fight. Even when there’s nothing going on, they’ll stir up trouble—let alone this time, with such generous rewards. Anyone would take a gamble."
Compared to comprehensive academies like White Coral Academy that leaned toward the White Wizard style, organizations like Blackbone Grove and Mist Tower, which were purely Black Wizard-based, were much more aggressive in their actions.
In the face of absolute benefits, they were willing to gamble on even the greatest risks.
Of course, this was also because Black Wizard Apprentices had relatively stronger average combat abilities.
Even if they didn’t have the same academic foundation as White Wizard Apprentices, they were highly proficient in identifying the most effective witchcraft for killing.
"So, I’d like to ask—does anyone want to team up with me and take this mission togeth—"
Rumble—before Hugh Stone could finish his sentence, a deafening roar accompanied by violent tremors swept over the group.
In an instant, the tremors ceased, but the continuous rumbling noise still rang in everyone’s ears.
"What’s going on? Is it an earthquake?"
"Everyone, return to your dorms immediately—"
Before anyone could react to the sudden event, the cold mechanical voice of the Tower Spirit reverberated through the Magic Tower, forcibly interrupting the current information-sharing meeting of the White Ballet Shoes Club.
"The Tower Spirit has spoken, meeting adjourned!"
Upon hearing the Tower Spirit’s command, Richard Eva immediately ended the meeting.
The rest, still shocked and uncertain, stopped talking and quickly activated their protective witchcrafts, hastily leaving the Magic Tower and returning to their dormitories—said to be the most secure defensive structure for apprentices.
"Miss Janna, thank goodness you’re back!"
"Door Spirit, what happened?"
Just as she reached the dormitory entrance, the anxious-looking Door Spirit immediately called out to Janna.
"Just now, Lord Tower Spirit issued a notice—it said that due to the earthquake, several spatial rifts had appeared in the Misty Forest. And it's confirmed—they all lead to the Shadow Realm—"
Upon hearing this, the furrow between Janna’s brows actually began to relax.
"I see. If there’s any further news, inform me immediately."
"Yes, Miss Janna!"
After closing the door and returning to her dormitory, Janna didn’t immediately remove her wizard gear.
Instead, she walked over to the window.
Bathed in the afterglow of the setting sun, she observed the scene outside.
"So that’s what it was. Turns out the old calendar just flipped another page—"
Since Janna had enrolled at White Coral Academy, this marked the third time that a spatial rift leading to the Shadow Realm had appeared due to non-human-caused phenomena.
Without exception, such rifts were always repaired by the main material world within a week at most.
As long as one didn’t get too close, such events could practically be treated like recurring “sightseeing attractions” and wouldn’t pose any harm to nearby people.
However, all of this depended on whether the rift connected to an alternate dimension that behaved like a harmless, temporary “neighbor.”
Otherwise, things could become troublesome.
The Shadow Realm, being the longtime neighbor of the main material world, had frequent inter-world interactions.
If the rift was small, it wouldn’t be much of a concern. But if it expanded enough to allow creatures from both realms to travel back and forth, then it became a serious matter.
Especially since, in the Shadow Realm, there were many brainless, fearless shadow creatures.
For them, such rifts were prime opportunities to carry out their usual harassments.
At the same time, they also presented a golden opportunity for wizard organizations within wizard hubs to collect shadow materials.
"Just yesterday, a Darksun Apostle descended. And now an earthquake happens—who knows if the two are related..."
The next day, at noon.
After the turmoil of the previous day, White Coral Academy issued a new notice.
Aside from the rule prohibiting apprentices from leaving the academy grounds over the next few days, daily classes were to proceed as usual.
"Janna, did you hear? Both Blackbone Grove and Mist Tower have already assigned their apprentices missions to clear out shadow creatures. But our academy still isn’t letting anyone out—"
Hearing Vivian Rose complain in frustration beside her, Janna didn’t have much of a reaction.
After all, White Coral Academy was famously protective of its apprentices.
Until lethal risks were fully eliminated, it wouldn’t rush to match the actions of its two “neighbors.”
"This is just the way our academy manages things. But I bet within a few days, we’ll follow suit with the other two wizard organizations—after all, spatial rifts don’t last long."
"So annoying. I was hoping to use this opportunity to test my new wand."
"You got a new wand again?"
"Not a new one—just had Master Raccoon Cat upgrade it for me."
As she spoke, Vivian Rose took out a luxurious wand from her Interdimensional Storage Pouch.
It was crystal-clear, with a snowflake-shaped ice-blue gem embedded at its tip.
"The magic convergence effect has improved again. Isn’t it beautiful?"
"Yeah, it’s definitely nice—"
What an enviable girl!
That afternoon's schedule resumed with the Ancient Magic History class, which had been interrupted halfway through the previous day.
In the sleepy atmosphere, Janna, one of the few who consistently followed Professor Uta’s lectures while taking notes, noticed that he had glossed over many details—unusual for someone known for his thorough explanations.
"Class dismissed."
"Goodbye, Professor Uta."
After packing her textbook and handing her notes to Vivian Rose, Janna picked up her book and headed for her next classroom.
"Vivian, I’ve got an elective next. You don’t need to wait for me."
"This late? Whose class is it?"
"The headmaster’s."
