Solus: Path Of The Forsaken

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: A Stranger in the Dark

The soft beep echoed in Ishizaki's mind like a warning bell. He rose to his feet, his muscles stiff and sore, and gripped his knife tightly.

"Wake up," he said, his voice sharp but low. "We've got company."

Drax stirred first, his hand instinctively reaching for his sledgehammer. "What now?" he muttered, sitting up and glancing around the room.

"Unidentified energy signature approaching," Solus said in Ishizaki's mind. "Current distance: thirty-five meters."

"What does that mean?" Drax asked, his voice laced with irritation.

"It means something—or someone—is headed our way," Ishizaki replied, his eyes narrowing.

Hana rubbed her eyes, sitting up slowly. "Is it more bad guys?" she asked, her voice small and trembling.

"I don't know," Ishizaki admitted. He turned to Drax. "Stay with them. I'll check it out."

"Like hell you will," Drax said, getting to his feet. "You're not running off on your own again."

"This isn't up for debate," Ishizaki snapped. "If it's a threat, someone has to keep the kids safe."

Drax glared at him but didn't argue further. He hefted his hammer and stood by the kids, his expression grim.

The Threat Revealed

The air was cold and still as Ishizaki crept through the crumbling structure, his enhanced senses attuned to every sound and movement. The faint hum of the energy signature grew louder as he approached, each step tightening the knot in his chest.

"Analysis incomplete," Solus said. "The signature is faint but erratic. Caution is advised."

"Thanks for the reminder," Ishizaki muttered.

He rounded a corner, his knife glowing faintly in the dim light. The source of the energy signature came into view—a lone figure slumped against the wall, their silhouette barely visible in the shadows.

"Human," Solus confirmed. "Energy signature is originating from an external device."

Ishizaki approached slowly, his blade at the ready. The figure stirred, their head lifting slightly as they noticed him.

"Stay back," Ishizaki said, his voice cold.

The figure chuckled weakly, their voice hoarse and strained. "If I wanted to hurt you, kid, I wouldn't be sitting here half-dead."

Ishizaki's eyes narrowed, his grip on the knife tightening. "Who are you?"

The figure leaned back against the wall, their breathing labored. In the faint light, Ishizaki could see the glint of a metallic device embedded in their chest, glowing faintly with Q-Energy.

"Just a scavenger," the figure said. "Like you, I bet. But it seems I've had worse luck."

A New Mystery

Drax appeared behind Ishizaki, his heavy footsteps echoing in the silence. "What the hell is this?" he asked, his eyes narrowing at the figure.

"Not sure yet," Ishizaki replied. "They're carrying something. Solus says it's a device."

The figure smirked faintly, their hand moving to the glowing device in their chest. "This?" they said. "It's a gift… or maybe a curse. Depends how you look at it."

"What does it do?" Ishizaki asked, his tone sharp.

"It keeps me alive," the figure said. "Barely. But it's also the reason they're after me."

"They?" Drax asked, his grip on the sledgehammer tightening.

The figure coughed, their body shaking slightly. "The ones pulling the strings. You think the overlord's the real threat? He's just a pawn like the rest of us."

Ishizaki exchanged a glance with Drax, his mind racing. "What do you know about the facility?"

The figure chuckled weakly. "More than you do, I'd bet. But if you want answers, you'll have to keep me alive long enough to tell you."

Ishizaki hesitated, his gaze flicking to the glowing device in the figure's chest. Solus's voice broke the silence in his mind.

"Recommendation: Remove the device and analyze its contents. Host survival not guaranteed."

Ishizaki's chest tightened. "You're saying I have to kill them?"

"Negative," Solus replied. "However, the probability of host survival without the device is minimal."

"What's going on in that head of yours?" Drax asked, his voice cutting through the tension.

"We need that device," Ishizaki said quietly.

"And what about them?" Drax asked, nodding toward the figure.

Ishizaki's jaw tightened as he met the figure's gaze. They stared back at him, their expression calm but resigned.

"It's your call, kid," the figure said.

The tension in the room was suffocating. Ishizaki stood motionless, his knife still gripped in his hand as he stared at the stranger slumped against the wall. The faint glow of the device in their chest pulsed in rhythm with their shallow breaths, casting flickering shadows across the cracked walls.

"You can't seriously be thinking about this," Drax said, breaking the silence. His voice was low, but there was no mistaking the anger simmering beneath his words.

"I'm thinking about what we need to do to survive," Ishizaki replied, his tone sharper than he intended.

"Survive?" Drax let out a bitter laugh. "You're talking about ripping some poor bastard's heart out for intel that might not even help us."

"It's not their heart," Ishizaki said, though the words sounded hollow even to him. "It's the device. And we need it."

The stranger chuckled weakly, their voice hoarse. "He's not wrong, you know. The thing's the only reason I'm still breathing. Take it, and I'm as good as dead."

Hana stepped forward, her wide eyes brimming with fear. "You're not really going to do it… are you?"

Ishizaki hesitated, his gaze flicking between the stranger, Drax, and the kids. The weight of their stares pressed down on him like a boulder.

"Solus," he said quietly, his voice trembling. "Is there any way to extract the data without removing the device?"

"Negative," Solus replied. "The device is integrated with the host's nervous system. Removal is the only viable option."

The Stranger's Insights

The stranger exhaled slowly, their head resting against the wall. "You want to know what's in that facility so badly?" they asked, their tone laced with exhaustion. "Fine. I'll tell you what I know."

Drax crossed his arms, his frown deepening. "If you know so much, why haven't they killed you yet?"

The stranger smirked faintly. "Because I'm more useful alive. That facility—your little 'Project Ascension'—it's more than just a lab. It's a proving ground."

"Proving ground for what?" Ishizaki asked.

"For people like you," the stranger said, nodding toward him. "People with… enhancements. The overlord's been gathering test subjects, pushing the limits of what Q-Energy can do. And guess what? They're not doing it alone."

Ishizaki's chest tightened. "Who's helping them?"

The stranger hesitated, their eyes darting toward the device in their chest. "I don't know their name," they admitted. "But whoever they are, they've got resources. Advanced tech. Enough to make the overlord look like a pawn on a much bigger board."

"Analysis of the subject's claims suggests partial validity," Solus said. "References to external support align with previous data fragments."

"What about the device?" Ishizaki asked. "What's its connection to the facility?"

The stranger's smirk faded, replaced by a grim expression. "It's a prototype," they said. "One of many. They're experimenting with ways to harness Q-Energy directly—turning people into weapons. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones."

The Decision

The room fell silent again as Ishizaki processed the stranger's words. His mind raced, the pieces of the puzzle clicking together but leaving more questions than answers.

"What do we do?" Hana asked quietly, her voice trembling.

Ishizaki closed his eyes, his fists clenching at his sides. He could feel the weight of their expectations, their fear, their trust. Every decision he made felt like a step closer to losing himself—or losing them.

"We let them keep the device," he said finally, his voice steady. "But they're coming with us."

Drax raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that? This could be a trap."

"Maybe," Ishizaki said. "But right now, we need them alive more than we need the device. And if they're lying…" He let the words hang in the air, the implication clear.

The stranger chuckled softly. "Fair enough," they said. "Guess I'm in your hands now, kid."

 A New Pursuit

Before anyone could respond, a sharp beep echoed in Ishizaki's mind.

"Warning," Solus said. "Hostile signatures detected. Distance: 500 meters and closing."

Ishizaki's eyes snapped open, his knife already in his hand. "How many?"

"Three squads," Solus replied. "Estimated time to contact: two minutes."

Drax let out a low whistle. "Looks like we've got company."

"Then we move," Ishizaki said, turning to the kids. "Stay close and don't stop running."

"And what about me?" the stranger asked, their smirk returning.

Ishizaki glanced at them, his expression cold. "Try to keep up."
