Chapter 122: Echoes of the Forgotten

The Path to the Unknown

The ruins loomed like silent sentinels, each spire etched with glowing red runes that pulsed in sync with an unseen rhythm. The deeper Jack's team ventured, the more oppressive the air became, as though the ruins themselves were alive and watching their every move.

"Stay focused," Jack's voice cut through the quiet tension. His mana blade rested in its holster, though his hand hovered near the hilt. "We've come too far to turn back now. Whatever's here, we need to find it."

Beside him, Eryndra moved gracefully, her gaze darting between the ancient carvings that lined the walls. Her fingers brushed lightly over one of the glowing symbols, and she paused, her silver eyes narrowing.

"These markings..." she murmured, her voice tinged with awe. "They're not demonic."

Jack stopped, frowning. "What are they, then?"

Eryndra stepped back, taking in the sheer scale of the carvings. "They're older. Much older. This place wasn't built by demons. Whatever made this..." She hesitated, her voice dropping lower. "It's something far beyond anything we've seen."

Her words sent a ripple of unease through the team. Soldiers shifted nervously, their weapons raised as they scanned the ruins for any signs of movement.

Private Kara Lin, gripping her rifle tightly, whispered, "What's older than demons?"

"Eyes up, Lin," snapped Sergeant Jorin, though his tone betrayed his own unease. "We're not here for a history lesson. Keep moving."

The Ruins Stir

The team moved cautiously, the silence of the ruins broken only by the faint hum of mana-powered equipment and the soft echoes of their footsteps. The deeper they ventured, the more the air seemed to change, growing colder and heavier. Whispers—soft, barely audible—began to emanate from the walls, a haunting sound that sent shivers down their spines.

"Commander," Eve's voice crackled in Jack's comm, her normally calm tone carrying a hint of urgency. "Energy readings are increasing exponentially. There's a massive mana source ahead... but it's unlike anything we've ever encountered."

Jack's brow furrowed. "What kind of energy?"

"It's... unstable," Eve replied. "And shielded. I can't get a clear scan."

Jack turned to the group. "Double your spacing. We don't know what we're walking into."

The soldiers nodded, their movements precise as they spread out. Drones zipped ahead, scanning the path, their soft hums echoing through the cavernous space. The ruins seemed to grow larger the deeper they went, the carvings on the walls becoming more intricate, almost alive.

Eryndra slowed her pace, her gaze fixed on a massive mural etched into the stone. The image depicted a battle—beings of light and shadow clashing against an overwhelming tide of darkness. At the center of the mural was a towering crystalline structure, radiating energy.

"This isn't just a ruin," she said, her voice low. "It's a warning."

Jack stepped beside her, his eyes narrowing as he studied the mural. "A warning about what?"

Before Eryndra could answer, the ground trembled. A deep, guttural roar echoed through the ruins, shaking the walls and sending dust cascading from the ceiling.

The Sentinel Awakens

"CONTACT!" Jorin shouted as a massive figure emerged from the shadows.

The Demonic Sentinel was a monstrosity—a towering fusion of corrupted flesh and gleaming metal. Its jagged frame radiated mana energy, and its glowing red eyes burned with predatory malice. With a deafening roar, it charged.

Jack's instincts kicked in immediately. "Spread out! Focus fire on its joints and keep moving!"

The soldiers scattered as the Sentinel lunged forward, its claws raking across the ground with terrifying speed. Mana-charged rounds struck its armored frame, but the creature seemed unfazed, its movements relentless.

Eryndra raised her bow, forming an arrow of pure mana. She loosed it with precision, the glowing projectile striking one of the Sentinel's legs and causing it to stagger. "Aim for the weak points!" she shouted.

The Sentinel roared in fury, its claws lashing out at the nearest mech. Sparks flew as the machine staggered, its armor buckling under the force of the blow.

Jack activated his mana blade, its hum cutting through the chaos. "Keep it distracted!" he ordered as he darted toward the creature's flank.

The battle was chaotic and brutal. The Sentinel lashed out with claws and waves of corrupted energy, forcing the team to stay on the move. Private Kara Lin narrowly dodged a crushing blow, firing desperately into the creature's exposed side.

Eryndra moved with precision, her arrows striking the Sentinel's joints and slowing its movements. "It's not just a mindless beast," she muttered, her tone grim. "Something's controlling it."

The Chamber Awakens

After a grueling fight, the Sentinel faltered. Jack seized the moment, driving his mana blade deep into the creature's chest. The blade pulsed with energy, and the Sentinel let out a final, deafening roar before collapsing in a heap of ash and twisted metal.

The team stood in silence, catching their breath as the dust settled. The chamber was eerily quiet once more, the whispers from the walls growing louder.

"That... was too close," Kara muttered, her hands trembling as she reloaded her rifle.

Jack turned to the group, his voice steady despite the tension. "Everyone alright?"

Nods and murmurs of affirmation followed, though the weariness was clear in their eyes. Eryndra approached Jack, her silver eyes flickering with curiosity and concern.

"You have a habit of throwing yourself into danger," she said, a faint smirk tugging at her lips.

Jack wiped the ash from his blade. "It worked, didn't it?"

"You're lucky you've got people willing to keep you alive," she replied, her tone light but pointed.

Before Jack could respond, the ground trembled again, this time accompanied by a low hum. The glow of the runes intensified, and the air grew heavy with mana energy.

"Commander," Eve's voice crackled urgently in Jack's comm. "The energy source is activating. You need to see this."

At the center of the chamber, the stone floor split apart, revealing a massive crystalline structure buried beneath the ruins. The crystal pulsed with light, its energy filling the room with an almost deafening hum. Strange machinery surrounded it, ancient and alien in design, glowing with the same otherworldly light.

Jack stepped forward cautiously, his eyes narrowing. "What is this...?"

Eryndra placed a hand on the crystal, her expression softening. "This... isn't demonic. It feels pure."

Before anyone could react, the crystal flared with light. The chamber shook violently as the machinery around it whirred to life, releasing streams of energy into the air.

A beam of light shot upward from the crystal, and a towering, humanoid figure materialized above it. Its body shimmered with golden light, and its features were indistinct, shifting like a reflection on water. The air grew still, the whispers silenced.

The figure spoke, its voice deep and resonant, echoing with power.

"Who dares awaken the legacy of the Aetherials?"
