Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Foundations of Power
Chapter 18: Foundations of Power
Jack's Perspective
The hum of industry was a constant backdrop in the forward base. Jack stood on a raised platform overlooking the heart of his growing empire. Automated machines churned out materials, construction drones pieced together new buildings, and his Mana Refinery operated at full capacity. What had once been a small outpost was now on the verge of becoming a true settlement.
Eve's voice broke the silence. "Commander, satellite data has provided additional information on the neighboring kingdoms. One in particular may pose a challenge."
Jack glanced at the holographic map, where a nearby nation, Altheria, was highlighted. It was a modest-sized kingdom to the northwest, with a well-established military and a reputation for aggressive territorial expansion.
"Altheria, huh?" Jack muttered. "What's their tech and magic level?"
Eve replied promptly. "Primarily medieval with limited mana-enhanced weaponry. Scouts indicate a strong cavalry presence and rudimentary siege engines. Mana integration is crude but sufficient to bolster their forces."
Unit 01 approached. "Commander, Altheria has been expanding southward. It is likely they will encounter our borders soon."
Jack smirked. "Let them come. They'll learn quickly why that's a bad idea."
Diplomacy in Sylvanelle
Meanwhile, Vaeloria, High Warden of Sylvanelle, met with one of Jack's envoys—a clone representative equipped with a mana-adaptive interface. The elves had cautiously accepted Jack's machines, but many among their ranks were still uneasy.
"Our people have noticed increased activity in your territory," Vaeloria said, her tone measured. "What are you building?"
The clone spoke with calm precision. "Our Commander has authorized the construction of infrastructure to strengthen our defenses and support our people. This includes housing, agriculture, and automated security."
"And what of the mana zones?" Vaeloria asked, her golden eyes narrowing slightly. "You assured us the core forest would remain untouched."
"The Commander has upheld his promise," the clone replied. "Only peripheral zones, as agreed, are being utilized. If there are any discrepancies, your feedback will be forwarded."
Vaeloria remained silent for a moment, then nodded. "Very well. But know this—if your machines disrupt the forest's balance, our alliance will end."
A Warning from the Northwest
As Jack reviewed plans for expanding the forward base into a full-fledged settlement, a scout drone sent an alert. A small Altherian patrol was approaching from the northwest, their banners visible even from the drone's aerial feed.
"Commander," Unit 01 said, "it appears Altheria is probing our defenses. Their group consists of ten mounted knights and a mage."
Jack activated the live feed, watching as the knights moved cautiously but deliberately through the plains.
"Let them come closer," Jack said. "I want to see how bold they really are."
The First Encounter
The Altherian patrol stopped just outside the base's perimeter, staring in awe at the towering structures and advanced machinery. The knight leading the group stepped forward, his ornate armor reflecting the afternoon sun.
"This is the domain of the Iron King?" the knight called out. His voice was loud and confident, but the tension in his posture betrayed his unease.
Jack emerged from the main gate, flanked by Unit 01 and two armored clones. His exosuit gleamed faintly, its energy shielding humming softly. The sight of him silenced the Altherians, their gazes fixed on the strange, otherworldly armor.
"You're trespassing," Jack said coldly. "State your purpose."
The knight hesitated, then spoke. "I am Sir Roderic of Altheria. Our kingdom seeks to know the identity of the ruler who commands these... machines. Your presence has not gone unnoticed."
Jack's eyes narrowed. "And what does Altheria intend to do with that information?"
Sir Roderic straightened. "That depends on your intentions, Iron King. Are you friend—or foe?"
Jack smirked. "That depends on your next move. If you're here to negotiate, speak. If you're here to threaten, leave while you still can."
The mage accompanying Sir Roderic stepped forward, his eyes glowing faintly with mana. "Machines cannot stand against magic," he said arrogantly. "Your power is nothing but a fleeting spark."
Jack's smirk vanished, replaced by a cold glare. "You're welcome to test that theory."
The clones raised their weapons, and Jack's drones hovered into position, their turrets locking onto the Altherian patrol. The hum of energy weapons filled the air, drowning out the ambient noise of the plains.
Sir Roderic raised a hand, silencing the mage. "We mean no harm," he said quickly. "We were sent to observe, nothing more."
Jack tilted his head. "Then consider yourselves observed. Take your message back to your kingdom: I don't tolerate threats, and I don't take orders. If Altheria wants peace, they'll find me reasonable. If they want war..." He gestured to the drones. "...they'll find me prepared."
The tension hung heavy in the air before Sir Roderic nodded reluctantly. "We'll deliver your message."
Strengthening the Base
As the Altherians retreated, Jack returned to the Command Center. Eve greeted him with a report. "Commander, the encounter has been logged. It is likely Altheria will respond with either an emissary or increased reconnaissance."
"They'll test the waters," Jack muttered. "We need to be ready."
He pulled up the base expansion plans, refining the designs for defense turrets and perimeter barriers. Additionally, Jack approved the next phase of research: armored vehicles designed for rapid deployment and battlefield dominance.
"Eve," Jack said, "prioritize research on light combat vehicles and enhanced drone capabilities. If Altheria or anyone else tries to push us, I want to be able to hit back hard."
"Understood, Commander," Eve replied. "Resource allocation updated."
Back in Sylvanelle
Vaeloria stood on a high ridge overlooking the forest, her thoughts troubled. The alliance with Jack had brought stability, but the arrival of Altherian patrols so close to his base was concerning.
"The balance of power is shifting," she said quietly.
An elder beside her frowned. "And the Iron King tilts it further with each passing day."
Vaeloria's golden eyes glimmered faintly. "Let us hope he remains a friend. For if he becomes our enemy... there will be no stopping him."
