Chapter 868: Tang Tian's Identity
"Tang Tian is missing," Lan Xue's voice sounded in the earpiece.
"What?" Luo Zheng was shocked. He pulled the car over and continued to ask through the earpiece, "What happened? Why did she suddenly disappear?"
"She said she was going out to greet a guest when a car suddenly came and took her away. Our car pursued but was blocked by a truck. We're interrogating the truck driver now," Lan Xue quickly explained.
"A strong opponent," Luo Zheng said with a solemn expression. After contemplating for a moment, he continued coldly through the earpiece, "The convoy should return to the villa, cancel the operation. Xue Er, have your people withdraw as well."
"What's wrong?" Liu Qingqing asked quietly, surprised.
"Tang Tian ran away just now," Luo Zheng said irritably, starting the car and heading towards the villa after making a U-turn. Seeing Mountain Eagle's confused look, he explained with a wry smile, "This little girl is very vigilant. After seeing the motorcycle action fail, she must have realized she was exposed and immediately changed her plan. She's a tough opponent, only fifteen or sixteen. I fear she has a master guiding her."
"Do you mean Charlie?" Mountain Eagle asked in surprise, in a low voice.
Luo Zheng nodded noncommittally and continued driving. Before long, Lan Xue's voice came through the earpiece: "A little girl selling flowers came over saying she was entrusted to deliver a letter specifically addressed to you. I haven't read it but had Hong Meihua check it out—nothing wrong on the surface, no poison, no threats. It seems genuine."
"Open it and take a look," Luo Zheng said through the earpiece.
"Okay," Lan Xue agreed. Shortly thereafter, she continued through the earpiece, "A family feud must be avenged, just four words, printed out by a printer, no handwriting. A family feud? We don't have a family feud with anyone. It seems aimed at us. Who do we have a family feud with?" her words carried a tone of confusion and surprise.
"Hmm?" Luo Zheng pondered, recalling that he hadn't made many enemies in life. Before joining the army, it was impossible. After becoming a soldier, he made quite a few enemies, but they were all battlefield adversaries due to differing political stances, not personal vendettas. The Song family? Impossible—they wouldn't do something like this. Who could it be?
"Could it be the Wolf King of the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group? Seems like only he counts as a family feud, right? Could it be the Wolf King's descendants seeking revenge on us? I remember the Wolf King had a daughter, skilled with computers, responsible for external communications within the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group, listed at headquarters with very little information. There was no trace of her during the last sweep, and no one has ever seen her in person. Could it be her?" Lan Xue suddenly said, sounding worried.
"Hmm?" Luo Zheng was startled and analyzed based on Lan Xue's suggestion, realizing only the Wolf King qualifies as having a family feud. There's no second person. Could it really be the Wolf King's daughter? From the surface, the conditions basically fit the characteristics. He couldn't help but become more serious, speaking in a low voice, "Can we catch Tang Tian's adoptive father? It would be best if we can; if not, withdraw first."
"Her adoptive father hasn't shown up; I reckon he's fled by now. I'll arrange for someone to follow up immediately," Lan Xue agreed.
On the way back, Luo Zheng remained silent with a grim face. Liu Qingqing realized her mistake was trusting others too easily, showing a lack of awareness of the complexities of human nature. This betrayal was a painful lesson for the fifteen or sixteen-year-old Liu Qingqing, leaving her deep in thought with a gloomy expression.
Mrs. Liu wanted to say something to console her, but the words seemed powerless and she swallowed them back, sighed quietly, closed her eyes, adopting a resigned posture. The car was silent, filled with an oppressive atmosphere. Mountain Eagle, not much of a talker himself, was vigilantly observing the surroundings for any unwelcome surprises.
The journey was calm, everyone returned to the villa, as did the convoy. After parking the vehicles, everyone disembarked and looked towards Luo Zheng, whose somber expression was intimidating, deterring any questions. Luo Zheng returned to the villa, assigned Lan Xing to keep a watch on Mrs. Liu and Liu Qingqing, and went back to his room.
Soon after, Lan Xue and the others hurried back. Upon discovering the tense atmosphere among the group, they traced it back to Luo Zheng and knocked on his bedroom door, sitting on the edge of the bed, addressing Luo Zheng who was leaning on the sofa, "Your mood has affected everyone. This is inappropriate for a commander."
"Yes, I know. I just feel blocked up inside," Luo Zheng said heavily.
"You're worried about Tang Tian?" Lan Xue perceptively asked, seeing Luo Zheng nod, she thought for a moment before continuing, "You don't need to worry about her. Since this operation failed, she definitely won't act again—not until she finds the right opportunity. As for your family's safety, they are fundamentally mercenaries with their own code. They won't harm your family. If there was any intention, they would have acted already."
"I hope so," Luo Zheng smiled bitterly, standing to hand Lan Xue a bottle of mineral water before opening one for himself and gulping down a few sips, saying, "Tomorrow is the last day. Tonight is the enemy's only chance. I'll go arrange the defense; whatever happens, we must hold out until the end. As for the rest, we'll deal with it then."
Lan Xue saw Luo Zheng's fighting spirit reignite and felt relieved, nodding before leaving. Luo Zheng gathered Shi Feng, He Shan, Shi Tao, and Niu Gang among others to arrange defense plans. He returned to the living room and sat idle. Lan Xing came to report that despite leveraging all connections, they couldn't locate Tang Tian and her adoptive father; they seemed to have vanished into thin air.
Hong Meihua, overhearing the situation, immediately said, "Stop looking then. I suspect they have other identification—likely they've left Beijing. If Tang Tian's true identity is as you suspect, she must have a team assisting her. With their skills, escape, concealment, and disguise methods won't be lacking."
"Forget it, stop searching. She'll come to us eventually. Knowing who she is is enough. Too many enemies to kill them all; let her be," Luo Zheng said indifferently. The priority was ensuring no issues tonight; after tomorrow, everything will be resolved.
Just then, Liu Qingqing walked down and handed Luo Zheng a phone. Luo Zheng was startled, seeing Liu Qingqing's distressed face, he suddenly understood. Motioning everyone to stay silent, he took the phone to his ear and coldly said, "Speak, what do you want?"
"I'm sure you've guessed who I am. To the worldly people, you represent justice, I represent evil. You kill me, I kill you—everyone relies on their abilities. But you killed my father; the vengeance for a father's death is irreconcilable. We will meet again," an icy voice said slowly, with a touch of coldness.
"Alright, I'll be waiting. I hope you uphold the Wolf King's prestige. He was an enemy worthy of respect," Luo Zheng coldly retorted.
"Thank you for the compliment, but it doesn't lessen my hate for you," the opponent replied coldly, hanging up the phone.
