Chapter 910: Exposed by the Enemy
Without the handcuffs and ropes, and having replenished some water, Luo Zheng felt a bit better. He walked to the side of the embers, sat down on the ground, and picked up the leftover meat to chew slowly. The hungrier one is, the slower they should eat; one must chew carefully to reduce the burden on the stomach and to help absorb the food's calories as quickly as possible.
After a few bites, Luo Zheng drank two gulps of water and continued eating, while keeping his ears tuned to the situation outside. Perhaps because dawn was approaching, no one came to check on him. Luo Zheng enjoyed the food to his heart's content. The calories helped his body gradually return to normal, and with food in his stomach, his strength also recovered significantly.
After about ten minutes, Luo Zheng swallowed all the remaining pieces of meat and drank a few mouthfuls of water. He slung the water bottle over his neck and tucked the Little Dao into his waist. He walked over to the two guards who had died and searched them, finding an M1911 on one of them, a standard issue weapon for Sam Country's military police. It's a .45 caliber handgun, holding seven rounds, with an effective range of 50 meters, suitable for close combat. It's widely circulated in the market, not hard for this group to acquire.
Luo Zheng wasn't particularly interested in this gun, but during a life-and-death period, beggars can't be choosers. He took both guns, searched the bodies again, and found some cash in multiple currencies, a few magazines, and took the lighters, stuffing everything into his pocket, except for the cigarettes.
With a gun in hand, Luo Zheng felt a surge of confidence. He listened for a while and sensed there were probably no fewer than three people outside. He walked to the window and peered out. In the moonlight, he discovered many wooden huts built along the mountain, layered upon each other downward. He couldn't tell how many. His position was the highest, and given his current physical condition, sneaking out wouldn't be easy. Sitting and waiting for death wasn't an option either. What to do?
Luo Zheng couldn't help but lower his head in thought and realized the ground was all smooth stones. The wooden huts were built on the stones and weren't very sturdy. If necessary, one could simply crash in. These huts had no defensive strength; leaving quickly was imperative.
There were people outside, and his body had not yet recovered. Going out meant certain death, but staying meant waiting for death. Luo Zheng's tiger-like eyes narrowed in contemplation. He raised his head slightly to look at the roof. The roof was made with wooden beams, covered with a mixture of straw and mud, about three meters high; it couldn't be climbed, nor could it hide people. Suddenly, an idea came to him.
Luo Zheng quietly opened the door, peeked outside through the crack, and found a person about ten meters in front of the door. They were hiding behind a stone, smoking to stay awake, the cigarette light flickering. The person was only guarding against threats from below the mountain and hadn't noticed the wooden hut behind them, giving Luo Zheng a clear sight.
After waiting for a while and ensuring he hadn't been seen, Luo Zheng took a gun in his hand, slipped out through the door sideways, gently closed it behind him, and built up all his strength to jog quickly along the wall corner. Once at the other side of the hut, he crouched down, hiding his body in the shadow. He looked up at the wooden house above. The wooden house was structured with wooden frames joined by mortise and tenon joints. Luo Zheng grabbed a wooden piece, resting his foot on a protruding joint, and began to climb.
In the darkness, Luo Zheng climbed up the wooden wall like a nimble monkey, exerted himself to grab hold of a beam protruding above, contracted his body with great effort, and got onto the beam on top. The roof was gabled, with the beam in the middle providing stability. This beam was large and solid, allowing Luo Zheng to climb onto the roof. Weak and exhausted, he lay down, looking at the starry sky and bright moon, finding it all so enchanting.
Driven by the will to survive, Luo Zheng climbed onto the roof, completely exhausted, and could only lie down to rest. Looking at the moonlight and stars lifted his spirits a bit. He opened the water bottle for a sip and closed his eyes to rest. Hiding on the roof provided the effect of blending into the surroundings. Who would expect a murderer fleeing for their life to be hiding on site overnight? It was uncertain whether this would fool Tang Tian, but fleeing overnight was also certain death. Luo Zheng could only risk a gamble.
Time ticked by second by second, and unknowingly, the sky started to brighten. As he watched the rising sun, Luo Zheng felt a heavy heart. He checked his weapons and lay patiently waiting. Not long after, Luo Zheng heard someone approaching, entering the wooden hut, and soon a loud alarm was raised.
Before long, a large number of people entered the wooden house, and soon Tang Tian's angry roar echoed out. It was in a strange dialect that Luo Zheng couldn't understand, but he heard many people shouting as they ran down the mountain to pursue him, causing him to smile. As long as these people left, his chance to escape would slightly increase.
After waiting for a while, Luo Zheng cautiously peeked out. After more than two hours of rest, his strength had significantly recovered. However, Luo Zheng was surprised to find that Tang Tian hadn't left. Instead, she stood not far from the wooden hut with a group of people, leisurely facing the roof with a cold smile. Luo Zheng was shocked; he hadn't expected to be exposed, and couldn't help but say in frustration, "You're smart, I underestimated your intelligence."
"Wrong, it's you who are foolish. After starving for four days, even if you killed to get food and water, your body couldn't recover in such a short time. With your still unrecovered body, it would be impossible to evade secret sentries. So the only possibility is you hiding nearby, and the roof is the only choice." Tang Tian sneered. "Come down."
Having come this far, Luo Zheng couldn't possibly give in. His face turned stern, and he coldly replied, "You're a worthy opponent. Ending things like this between us isn't it a pity? What you've given me, I'll return doubly in the future. I'm leaving, see you again." As Luo Zheng spoke, his body suddenly leaped up, dashing furiously to one side.
After resting for several hours, although his body hadn't returned to normal levels, he could still escape with the help of his family's Breathing Skill. Rush down the roof, Luo Zheng directly jumped downward. In mid-air, he spotted two burly men ahead, coldly raising their guns. Startled, Luo Zheng reacted first, quickly pulling the trigger and shooting at them. His aim wasn't to kill but to harass them to buy time.
The precise shots forced the two to dodge, thus missing the chance to shoot Luo Zheng. Taking advantage, Luo Zheng landed on the ground and continued to sprint forward. The area erupted in gunfire, and countless bullets were shot around him, causing sparks to fly everywhere as they hit the surrounding rocks. Luo Zheng was terrified, mustering all his strength to run. Though not as fast as usual, he wasn't slow either. Using the nimble Bullet Avoidance Steps, the pursuers couldn't lock onto him for effective shooting.
Luo Zheng took the opportunity to run a dozen meters, suddenly seeing a cliff below. The cliff had a thirty-degree slope, and below was a roaring river, its waters tumultuous with hidden currents. Luo Zheng's face changed drastically. With bullets whizzing around him, sparking everywhere, getting hit seemed inevitable. Staying meant certain death, but jumping meant sure death too. What to do?
