Chapter 927: Pursuit of the Killer
The quiet night, the calm mountains, were suddenly pierced by the sound of a sniper rifle, making everyone tense up. What was even more unsettling was that there was no trace of the enemy, no idea where they were hiding, and Snow Leopard was silent, the state unknown. Everyone stayed prone on the ground, motionless, scanning everywhere for signs of the enemy. Luo Zheng crawled forward cautiously, his whole body tense with readiness.
Quickly, Luo Zheng crawled to Snow Leopard's side and called out softly. Snow Leopard lay motionless on the ground, causing Luo Zheng's heart to clench with worry. Hastily, he turned Snow Leopard over, discovering the eyes were shut tight, with a frozen expression and a bullet hole in the chest. His jacket had been pierced, and Luo Zheng was aghast. Based on Snow Leopard's lying position, Luo Zheng immediately deduced the enemy's general direction and promptly said, "South, remain vigilant."
"Yes." Everyone reacted upon hearing this, adjusting their gun barrels, but discovered that to the south there was a slope about fifteen hundred meters away, with no one in sight. Their rich combat experience indicated that the enemy was likely concealed behind the slope.
For a skilled sniper, the best tactic after firing a shot is to hide, instilling fear and chaos in the enemy so they can't find you, waiting for the right moment to fire a second shot. This tactic is even more lethal at night, even against opponents experienced in combat.
"How's Snow Leopard?" Lan Xue asked anxiously, a serious look in her eyes as she glanced towards the distant slope.
Luo Zheng lifted the clothing and saw the bullet had pierced through the bullet-resistant vest, driving the undershirt into the chest muscle, with blood gushing out. The shot was about three centimeters from the heart, which shocked him. He hurriedly pressed on Snow Leopard's heart area, trying with all his might to pound a few times to no avail, so he quickly performed CPR.
Snow Leopard, unable to catch his breath after being shot, slowly came around after Luo Zheng's emergency treatment, finally waking up. Luo Zheng breathed a sigh of relief, swiftly took out a blood-stopping bag from his pack, poured some styptic powder on it, then affixed it with gauze, anxiously asking, "How is it?"
"I won't die." Snow Leopard said with difficulty, his face pale, forehead covered in cold sweat. Having just entered the battlefield and being shot by an unseen foe nearly claimed his life, igniting a burning rage within him, gnashing his teeth in anger.
"Don't hurry, relax a bit." Luo Zheng quickly reminded.
Snow Leopard knew that anger wouldn't help and would only affect everyone, so he nodded, forcing a smile. However, the smile was bitter. Luo Zheng nodded understandingly, turning to everyone saying, "Stay vigilant. I'll circle around to check. Ghost Hand, come take care of Snow Leopard."
"Yes," everyone responded in unison.
Lan Xue saw Luo Zheng coordinate from the opposite side, quickly advising, "Be careful, the enemy might have already left the sniper position."
"Understood," Luo Zheng replied as he dashed forward, soon disappearing into the night like a ghost, strangely swift under the moonlight.
Lan Xue noticed Luo Zheng was faster than usual and smiled approvingly, saying softly, "Mountain Eagle, keep an eye on the left, I'll handle the right. Ghost Hand, see if there's anything you need to do. Snow Leopard, can you hold on?"
"Laying here for a night is fine, brothers, don't worry about me. Focus on helping Ghost Brother catch that bastard," Snow Leopard said with difficulty. Although the bleeding had stopped, the injury remained significant, with a broken rib. It wasn't a minor injury and required rest. Had Snow Leopard's body not been strong, he couldn't have lasted.
Everyone stayed prone, alert, motionless as if they were a broken log scattered in the desolate mountain wilderness. With cold eyes fixed on the front, exuding a chilling murderous aura in the moonlight, Luo Zheng was like a ghost running in the moonlight, unleashing unprecedented potential under the terrifying threat of the sniper.
He bypassed a ridge and circled up the mountainside from another direction when suddenly he saw a Black Shadow sprinting along the slope ahead, like a galloping antelope. Its speed was extremely fast. Luo Zheng was startled and immediately realized that the opponent was trying to escape but was wary there might still be ambushes elsewhere, so he dared not chase recklessly and immediately said, "Mountain Eagle, rush to the mountain top, Xue Er, cover Mountain Eagle. The enemy is fleeing, after occupying the high point, cover me, quickly."
"Understood," Mountain Eagle replied, grabbing the gun and charging towards the mountain top while Lan Xue hurriedly provided cover.
Under the moonlight, Mountain Eagle, like a charging leopard, ran with explosive anger using zigzag Bullet Avoidance Steps, cautiously scanning around to guard against any hidden enemies. Upon reaching a high point, he directly fell prone, propped up the sniper rifle, and shouted softly, "In position, provide coordinates."
"Southwest direction, sixteen hundred meters away, keep an eye on the surroundings in case of more enemies, I'm going," Luo Zheng said coldly, his sharp gaze filled with fury. Snow Leopard's injury had made him thoroughly angry.
"The other is an observation post, there may not be any other enemies around. Ghost Hand, Mountain Eagle, you two stay, I'll also go," Lan Xue, worried about Luo Zheng's safety, quickly said.
"No need, you stay here to command," Luo Zheng unhesitatingly rejected, rushing forward, knowing that with Mountain Eagle covering from behind, he feared less but still maintained a quick pace. To increase speed, he even dropped his backpack, leaping forward along the slope, Ghost Hand-like, lengthening a Black Shadow under the moonlight that soon vanished.
Mountain Eagle watched Luo Zheng leave, his face full of shock. He didn't expect Luo Zheng's movement technique and speed to have improved so much, feeling envious. He thought that Luo Zheng had been a border guard for just over two years to grow into his current capability, while he had five years of training and three years of actual combat experience, yet still couldn't compare to a soldier of just over two years. This disparity created a strong sense of crisis and the desire to become stronger, prompting him to thoroughly search the surroundings.
Luo Zheng sprinted for more than a thousand meters without coming under sniper fire, which allowed him to chase without reservation. After pursuing for another thousand meters, his sharp eyes remained fixed on the target ahead, calculating the distance. When estimating that they were about seven hundred meters apart, Luo Zheng prepared to find a spot to stop and take a shot. However, he unexpectedly saw the opponent cross a hilltop and disappear from sight. Startled, he quickly found a spot to hide.
The enemy was very cunning and fast, and, more importantly, capable of hitting Snow Leopard from over fifteen hundred meters away at night, which was a shocking sniping ability. Luo Zheng dared not be careless. He raised his binoculars to scan, which had a thermal imaging function, very handy under the moonlight.
After scanning around, and not finding any signs of the enemy, Luo Zheng's expression grew solemn. He closed his eyes slightly, his tiger eyes furrowing in thought. If it were him, what would he do if pursued? Hide and evade? Counterattack from concealment? Flank the attacker? Each was possible. What would a sniper expert choose?
