Chapter 929: Exposed Movements
The most terrifying thing on the battlefield isn't the strength of your opponent, but not knowing who they are, how many there are, or where they are. Lack of intelligence can cause anxiety, and this pressure can easily lead to errors in judgment. This enemy suddenly acted alone, without any accomplices nearby. What does that mean? Luo Zheng, filled with suspicion, approached the corpse, crouched down to examine it, and said, "Can we find out this person's identity?"
"Are you alright?" Everyone heard Luo Zheng's voice through their earpieces and asked almost in unison. Previously, considering Luo Zheng was ambushing an enemy, no one dared to speak and interrupt, silently waiting. Upon hearing his voice, they knew Luo Zheng had successfully sniped the target and sighed with relief.
Soon, the camera footage was transmitted via satellite to Lan Xing's computer. The face on the screen was unrecognizable; not only was the head blasted open, but one shoulder was also mutilated. It was impossible to identify by sight. Even with skull scanning technology, identifying them was futile. The skull was completely blown apart, formless; how could it be identified?
Lan Xing and Hong Meihua looked at the footage. Even though they were used to life and death and were bold, the sight still made them gasp. Lan Xing smiled bitterly at Hong Meihua, who carefully examined for a while, then helplessly said into the earpiece, "Can't tell, are there any other items for identity recognition?"
"Let me check." Luo Zheng flipped through the other person's camouflage suit; there was no military tag on the neck. Searching the body, there were no documents or anything to prove identity. He opened the backpack, finding only equipment inside, also not indicative of identity. All the equipment was from Sam Country, but that wasn't enough to prove identity, as Sam Country's military products are sold worldwide.
"He seems to be a Caucasian. Does he have any tattoos?" Hong Meihua continued to ask.
"No," Luo Zheng looked over again and said with no results and in frustration.
"Your location is about fifty kilometers from the enemy. This person suddenly ambushing you is a strange situation. Could it be the enemy's outpost is set so far out? Even if they're a sentry, why is there only one person?" Hong Meihua curiously voiced her doubts.
"Could it be because the person was overconfident? Thinking they alone were sufficient," Lan Xing also said.
"No, considering the surrounding terrain, the person acted because Ghost made the team suddenly stop. The person thought they were exposed, or without firing there would be no chance. So, they shot with a deterrent mindset, then retreated. If it weren't for Ghost circling around to chase, they wouldn't have discovered the retreat, and would have remained passively defending from afar. Using one shot to stop our march was a very calculative tactic." Lan Xue's voice sounded in everyone's earpiece.
"Makes some sense," Lan Xing, being not very knowledgeable about battlefield affairs, couldn't help but agree.
"Firing a shot means exposing oneself. Where did this confidence come from?" Hong Meihua retorted.
"They had this confidence judging from the shooting skills. Sniping at a target 1500 meters away under moonlight, even I don't have that confidence. The opponent not only had it but hit the target. Their skill is higher than mine," Luo Zheng said.
"It's a pity they still ended up dead by your hand," Hong Meihua chuckled.
"Luck, that's all. But that doesn't mean I'm better than them. It seems our opponent is stronger than we imagined. Everyone, be careful. Snow Leopard, are you alright?" Luo Zheng continued, with a sharp, concerned look in his eyes.
"No problem, I can walk," Snow Leopard quickly agreed, forcing themselves to stand.
"Someone help carry the equipment, come join us," Luo Zheng said, glancing at the surrounding terrain, noticing a small valley not far away, formed by two intersecting slopes. It wasn't big, but big enough to hide a few people. Luo Zheng carried the enemy's equipment and weapons, sneaked near the valley, and observed the surroundings, waiting.
After a while, everyone gathered in the valley, took out sleeping bags. Dawn was approaching; they needed to rest and recover energy. Luo Zheng couldn't sleep, so he served as a sentinel, lying prone in a hollow, covered by the camouflage suit, impossible to detect unless close, occasionally lifting binoculars to observe around.
The darkness before dawn was even deeper, the moon gradually setting. Luo Zheng coldly watched the distance, pondering why there were enemies here; even for an outpost, it wouldn't be set fifty kilometers out, right? Normally ten kilometers is the limit, usually five kilometers. Gunfire from five kilometers away can be heard, regrouping is easier.
"Could it be someone acting alone?" The thought flashed through Luo Zheng's mind but he quickly dismissed it. Given the opponent's skills and equipment, there was no reason to be alone. Thinking about the equipment, Luo Zheng couldn't help but take out the opponent's earpiece. It was intact, just silent. He thought it must be because the enemy knew they were killed, so switched channels.
"Could it be the enemy already knew there were pursuers behind, sending people to blockade and harass?" Luo Zheng shuddered at the thought of a terrifying possibility. The ambush on the military and the document robbery had a Shadow suspected of being Charlie. If the person killed last time wasn't Charlie, if the real Charlie was the mastermind, the whole affair might not be so simple.
Thinking of this, Luo Zheng quickly asked through the earpiece, "What's the situation in Beijing right now?"
"No progress. Everyone seems to have vanished into thin air. We suspect they've entered the Sam Embassy, but there's no way to search it. Unless you use the move you did last time, but this time the Sam Embassy has doubled its guards. Doing it again would be troublesome for the country. Do you have any idea?" Hong Meihua's voice came through the earpiece.
"Didn't your Intelligence Team say the whole affair was suspected to be orchestrated by Charlie? If Charlie truly exists and is not dead, then the hidden truth behind this is not simple. Knowing Charlie's meticulous and cunning nature, there must be follow-up actions. I'm worried our movements have been exposed, and the killed enemy was only sent to harass," Luo Zheng seriously whispered.
"That possibility exists. Besides, your friend's actions, although minimally effective, have alerted the enemy. The enemy surely knows they're being watched and will guard against our sudden attack. The possibility of sending people for long-distance reconnaissance is high. What do you think?" Hong Meihua analyzed.
"There's that possibility, but it shouldn't involve a sentry set so far out, not more than thirty kilometers. Unless they are sure we're behind, then it's possible. It seems our exposure likelihood is very high. Could it be Sam Country's satellite monitoring?" Luo Zheng worriedly said.
"It's not impossible. Do you have any plans?" Hong Meihua pursued.
