Chapter 945: Something Strange
In less than an hour, everyone arrived near a canyon. Luo Zheng observed the long canyon, with a dirt road passing through it. The mouth of the canyon was only about ten meters wide, flanked by steep peaks about two hundred meters high, with winding ridges on both sides. The only way for a truck to pass through was this canyon. Luo Zheng was delighted and said to Gai Wafu, "This is a natural barrier, perfect for relaxing. We'll teach them a lesson here and avenge our fallen brothers."
Speaking of the fallen, the two's expressions grew solemn, nodding without hesitation. If they didn't seek revenge, morale would drop, and the team would be hard to lead. This simple truth was clear to both. Sarazi asked, "How do we fight?"
"Have we planted land mines in the canyon?" Luo Zheng asked Gai Wafu.
Gai Wafu quickly inquired over the walkie-talkie, then nodded to Luo Zheng and said, "Yes, we've planted a dozen or so land mines. That's all the stock we have left. It should be enough to blow up a few vehicles, right?"
"That's enough. If it's not, we'll deal with it then. Everyone hide on the mountaintop for an ambush. Also, assign troops on both sides to prevent the enemy from sneaking up. Stick to the old rules: those originally defending the left continue on the left, spreading out to avoid infiltration by Sam Country's Special Forces. Those on the right continue on the right. Others defend the canyon." Luo Zheng instructed quickly, with a stern, battle-ready expression.
"Got it." Sarazi and Gai Wafu agreed wholeheartedly and began coordinating through the walkie-talkie.
Luo Zheng's piercing gaze looked back. The gunfire had already ceased, and the rearguard might have returned somewhat. For survival and hope, these people, though with bad repute, truly lived up to being warriors. Luo Zheng asked through the earpiece in Huaxia's language, "Are all the brothers here? Is everything okay?"
"We're here, all good." Everyone replied.
"Good. Continue commanding the troops and be on guard against attacks from Sam Country Special Forces." Luo Zheng reminded, looking behind him with concern. Sam Country Special Forces had infiltrated their ranks and taken out much of their heavy firepower; otherwise, they wouldn't have been defeated so quickly.
Everyone smartly acknowledged. In the earpiece, Lan Xing's voice came through, "Sorry to interrupt, the enemy has caught up. Some are following the dirt road, while quite a few are advancing along the ridges, covering the mountains and hills. They're spreading fast and are hard to deal with, be careful."
"Oh? The enemy has changed their tactics, interesting. This change makes things more difficult for us once they're dispersed, especially on both sides. Look for advantageous positions." Luo Zheng continued, and once everyone agreed, he immediately called over Sarazi and Gai Wafu to brief them on the situation.
The two agreed heartily, continuing to communicate with their troops, ordering them to follow Ghost Hand and others' commands. Given how the battle had turned, Luo Zheng and others sticking together moved Gai Wafu and Sarazi profoundly, prompting them to resolve to fight Siya Fa and avenge their fallen brothers.
Everyone prepared nervously. Before long, vehicle lights appeared in the distance—the enemy had arrived. Luo Zheng wondered if it was Sam Country Special Forces trying to cross through the night. His eyes narrowed, and he fiercely ordered, "Prepare for battle."
Everyone took cover and got ready for combat. The area around the canyon fell silent, an oppressive, murderous atmosphere pervaded, brewing into a dangerous tension under the night sky. The battle was about to erupt. Luo Zheng watched as the convoy drew closer, and human figures emerged from the surrounding mountains.
The enemy was not only using the dirt road but also crossing mountains. This parallel attack tactic was the most dangerous and generally inadvisable, but at this moment, it threatened Luo Zheng. With several times the enemy's numbers, Luo Zheng had no better way to counter this attack strategy. He had no choice but to split his forces to block them, preventing the enemy from forming an encirclement.
"These bastards want to annihilate us," Sarazi said coldly, with a hint of worry.
Gai Wafu also saw the enemy's intention and said helplessly, "We have no choice. They have more troops. Concentrating on the dirt road, they can't fully utilize their strength. Now that they've dispersed, we're in trouble. This battle will be tough. Why not go on the offensive instead?" he suggested, looking at Luo Zheng.
Luo Zheng also felt that taking the offensive was a good idea, as it could disrupt the enemy's rhythm. But that would only be wise if their forces were comparable or superior. Right now, they lacked the manpower. A rash attack meant abandoning their position, losing the geographical advantage, and suffering heavier losses. It was inadvisable, so he shook his head firmly and said, "No rush. They should be the anxious ones now. Let's rely on the terrain and wear them down. Fight if possible; retreat otherwise."
"Agreed." Sarazi concurred, and Gai Wafu, upon thinking it over, found sense in it and stopped insisting.
"They're here," Luo Zheng reminded coldly, watching the approaching enemy. He raised his sniper rifle, lying on the ground, quickly aiming, exuding a strong battle intent.
This fighting spirit infected Sarazi and Gai Wafu, who also found places to hide and prepared for battle. After waiting for a while, Luo Zheng noticed the convoy suddenly stopped about five hundred meters from the canyon, and even the enemies scaling the ridges halted and took cover.
"Hiss? Could we have been exposed?" Luo Zheng wondered aloud.
"What's happening?" Sarazi and Gai Wafu crouched low and came up beside Luo Zheng, asking softly.
"It's possible our ambush has been exposed. The enemy is planning their attack. Stay calm; the terrain here works in our favor." Luo Zheng whispered, closely observing the front. The enemies crossing the mountain were all concealed behind the ridges, out of sight, and those on the dirt road remained motionless, with no visible presence, making the situation mysterious.
"Check what's happening at Siya Fa's stronghold?" Luo Zheng whispered.
"Understood." Lan Xing promptly replied.
"I have something to discuss with you; hope it doesn't disturb you." Hong Meihua's voice sounded in the earpiece, "We've cut off the signal and communication at Sam Country's embassy as you instructed. But I still feel they can communicate with the outside. I don't know how. Do you have a way to break it?"
"Try infiltrating through the underground ducts and use poison smoke—as long as it's not lethal. They will have to send someone to the hospital, allowing us to spot suspicious individuals. Didn't they use remote-controlled vehicles to attack us underground before? You can go that route." Luo Zheng replied coldly, fed up with the warlords ahead, making his ideas even more ruthless.
Hong Meihua found sense in this and agreed wholeheartedly. Luo Zheng watched the enemy ahead, waiting for a while with no sign of attack. The situation grew puzzling—even if exposed, they should be attacking. What play were they enacting? With a puzzled mind, Luo Zheng decided to scout ahead for a closer look.
