Chapter 286: Evacuation Plan (4) - Heading to the City

They returned to where the royal family was — the same room as before.

The king spotted them first, and the surprise on his face said it all.

"What? Done already?" the king asked.

"Yes," William replied. "All of the soldiers are dead. Shall we move?"

The king wasn't the only one stunned by the news.

The entire royal family stared at William, clearly shaken — though none of them said a word.

They had underestimated him. All of them had.

"Sure," the king finally said. "The sooner we go, the better."

No one disagreed. There was no point in staying.

So they left the palace.

It was strange — almost surreal — for the royal family to step outside after so long.

The fresh air. The rustling trees. The forest stretching out before them. The towering mountains in the distance.

It was beautiful. Emotional, even.

But then they saw it.

The smoldering remains of the soldier's camp. The ash. The fire-scorched ground. The mangled corpses scattered everywhere. The trail of devastation left behind by William and Kier.

They had heard about the destruction. But seeing it up close... was something else.

It changed the way they looked at William. At Kier too.

These were not men to be crossed.

And now, they knew it.

"We shall go first to the biggest city near the palace," the king said. "There, we'll gather the people who still support the royal family. At least... I believe they still do."

During the rebellion, most of the spies and enemy forces had focused on the larger cities in the center of the island — where the movement to overthrow the royal family had begun.

But this city, far to the north, had always been closer — in distance and in spirit — to the royal palace.

Back when the royal family still ruled, they would often visit the city. Walk the streets. Speak to the people. It left a mark. The king knew it.

William remembered when he passed through that same city with Jhen.

She'd spoken to the guards, claiming a secret mission in the palace — and they had helped her without hesitation.

It was clear: they wanted the royal family to return.

That city was their first destination.

The journey would take time.

Everyone was on foot. The royal family was weak.

They moved slowly.

"I thought a powerful royal family would have better transportation," William said. "No flying carriage? No magical beast or horse?"

The king laughed. "We do have one. A royal carriage. It even bears our crest. Which, as you can imagine, isn't ideal right now. We're trying to stay hidden."

"And," he added, "none of us are in the right condition to control such a treasure."

"Makes sense," William said.

On the road, Victoria and Kier walked beside William.

Kier was quiet — afraid, mostly — still unsure about the path ahead.

Victoria, on the other hand, wore a strange mix of emotions on her face.

She was sad. And yet, somehow, relieved.

Jhen was dead.

Her death had left a wound — but it also removed a looming fear.

Inside the bloodline chamber, Victoria had truly believed she would die at Jhen's hands.

So yes — it hurt. But it also felt like a weight had been lifted.

"You'll be okay," William said gently. "Being betrayed like that... hurts. I know it does. But in the end, it was her or us."

"I know..." Victoria replied, looking down. Her voice was quiet. Her heart, heavier than her words.

The path to reach the city wasn't safe. Magical beasts were there, ready to attack at any moment. A few came to attack them, even the same vultures as the other time.

But now William was just much stronger than before.

Name: William Velmont

Level: 52

Class: None

Attributes:

Strength: 223

Agility: 245

Stamina: 199

Intelligence: 510

Mana: 200

Demonic Energy: 480

Active Bonuses: +40% Learning Speed

All of his attributes increased with the improvement in his bloodline, and he also leveled up a few times.

The only thing he wished to master was more black fire spells, but that required some time to sit down and study. He believed he would get that time after they left the demon island.

Also, he still didn't have a class, but there was something different in William after he fell into that pit. He was seeing flashes of past memories. It was strange, mysterious. Maybe that could help him get his class?

"I need a class related to my bloodline so these memories might help me…" he thought.

A class was the only thing that William still wanted.

When night came, they stopped to camp. It was a place near a river, so they had a source of water, and they also had the trees to use as cover.

It was still dangerous, obviously. They were in a wilderness area. The chance of getting attacked during the night was still there.

But they needed rest. More precisely, William and Victoria needed it. Both had been inside the palace for a long time without sleeping. William also had to fight with Jhen — a difficult fight — and with the soldiers outside.

He needed time to just relax, close his eyes, and sleep. Even with his high level of power, sleeping was still necessary. It was something that not even the strongest could run away from.

While the royal family set up the camp and made the campfire, William left and hunted something small for them to eat.

His night vision was key to finding an animal in the forest. He found a deer, which was more than enough food for them.

"We can store the deer meat and eat it during the rest of our journey," one of the royal princesses said. "I can use magic to keep it fresh."

"That's good," William said.

William cleaned the deer, and after that, cleaned his body and clothes in the nearby river. The blood was all over him.

That night, they enjoyed a good meal and got a proper rest.

The only doubt in William's mind was: would they find a way to gather enough people?

Also, could the king be certain that the noble families didn't have their men in that city too? Was it truly safe for the royal family to go there?
