Lan Xin and her junior sister Xiao Lan arrived outside the guest room courtyard. Lan Xin felt inexplicably nervous and asked Xiao Lan beside her.
"Xiao Lan, is my hair a bit messy?"
Xiao Lan glanced at Lan Xin, chuckled, and said:
"Elder Sister, so you do get nervous after all. I thought there was no one in this world who could overwhelm you."
Lan Xin glared at Xiao Lan and chided:
"Stop talking nonsense... Is my hair messy or not? And should I change my clothes?"
Xiao Lan, holding Lan Xin's hand, said:
"Elder Sister, you are the most beautiful as you are, why suddenly lack confidence? In the desert, you didn't even consider Elder Sister Zhi Ruo of Emei Sect as a rival, why are you so timid now?"
A hint of red crept onto Lan Xin's face. She took a deep breath, composed herself a bit, and arrived with Xiao Lan at the entrance to the guest room.
The door was slightly ajar.
Xiao Lan pushed open the door, and Lan Xin walked into the room.
Ju Yun, seeing Lan Xin and Xiao Lan enter, hurried over and called out:
"Elder Sister Lan Xin, Young Master Yang has come to see you."
She then gave Lan Xin a meaningful smile.
Yang Xiao quickly stood up from the chair beside the table, smiling and said:
"Miss Lan Xin, I hope you do not find my sudden visit too presumptuous?"
Lan Xin gave a slight smile, but before she could speak, Xiao Lan immediately said:
"Not at all, not at all. Elder Sister and I were just talking about you. You haven't visited for so long, I thought you had forgotten about us, hehe."
"Xiao Lan!"
Lan Xin's face flushed with embarrassment as she glared at Xiao Lan.
Xiao Lan knew her elder sister all too well; such words could only break the metaphorical window paper between Lan Xin and Yang Xiao if they came from her.
Xiao Lan took Ju Yun's hand and said:
"Young Master Yang, please have a seat, we still have something to take care of."
After speaking, she pulled Ju Yun out of the room, even thoughtfully closing the door behind them.
Lan Xin sat opposite Yang Xiao, separated by a table where Ju Yun had already poured two cups of tea.
Lan Xin picked up her cup and said:
"Young Master Yang, please have some tea."
"Thank you!"
Yang Xiao took a sip, placed down the cup, and took a moment to truly look at Lan Xin sitting across from him.
Compared to the roughness of the desert, the current Lan Xin truly seemed like a transcendent fairy, untainted by the dust of the world.
With the saying 'the land nurtures its people,' having grown up in the icy and snowy surroundings of Shenming Mountain, coupled with her natural beauty, she was the embodiment of pure jade and unbending frost.
Yang Xiao found himself staring blankly at Lan Xin.
Qin Yu and Deng Xiao possessed the gentle and pure beauty of modern women, the woman from Magic City Global Financial Square number 25 had a unique charm of a foreign beauty, while the Lan Xin before him had a classical beauty—a fairy-like quality that seemed untouched by worldly concerns.
Lan Xin, feeling somewhat shy under Yang Xiao's gaze, offered a faint smile and said:
"Young Master Yang?"
Yang Xiao snapped out of his reverie, quickly restraining his wandering thoughts and said:
"Always calling me Young Master Yang, isn't it too formal and distant? Perhaps calling me by my name would be better, Yang Xiao."
Lan Xin smiled and nodded, "Okay!"
"Lan Xin, miss,"
"You let me call you by your name, but you address me as 'miss,' that's not fair. Why don't you just call me by my name as well?"
By the end of Lan Xin's remark, her voice was somewhat lower, feeling her heartbeat quicken.
Usually, her senior brother Mo Yan would call her "Lan Xin," but she insisted he add "junior sister" after her name. Now, she was actively letting Yang Xiao address her by her given name, and it made her heart flutter like a startled deer.
"Alright then, Lan Xin..."
It was the first time he called her that; Yang Xiao still felt somewhat uncomfortable, for they weren't exactly in an intimate relationship.
"Everything alright since you came out of the desert?"
Lan Xin nodded and said,
"Not bad, everything is as before. It's just that the desert is temporarily inaccessible. It's a pity to lose a source of high-quality Genetic Balls. There aren't many Mutant Monsters on Divine Mountain; you need to go below halfway up the mountain into the forests to find more Mutant Monsters."
...
The two chatted aimlessly, feeling happy talking about just anything and sharing joyful laughter from time to time.
It's strange how things feel with people; some people you see every day still feel like strangers, while others you've only met a few times feel like old friends, and it's very cozy being together.
Yang Xiao expressed his wish to go outside for a walk and to take a look at the scenery of the mysterious Shenming Mountain Sect.
Lan Xin then took Yang Xiao out and showed him around the architectural layout of the South Garden of the Shenming Mountain Sect.
After Yang Xiao finished looking around, he suddenly asked,
"On the day the apocalypse started, there were no earthquakes here? No buildings collapsed?"
"No."
"And your masters?"
Lan Xin's expression turned sorrowful upon Yang Xiao mentioning the masters, and she said in a heavy tone:
"One morning we woke up to find our masters, uncles, and some of the older senior sisters had all died."
Yang Xiao was taken aback and asked,
"How did they die?"
Lan Xin shook her head and replied,
"I don't know. I only remember waking up to an unusually quiet courtyard. Normally our master would rise early to cultivate, but that morning was particularly silent. I went to look for my master, entered her room, and found her lying on the bed, breathless. Then, one by one, junior sisters began to cry out in alarm, which was when we learned that dozens of our elders had died the night before.
At first, we thought it was some sort of accident or assassination, so we hurriedly sent people to the North Garden of the Shenming Mountain Sect. It was only when we reached the North Garden that we found the same thing had happened there.
We were stunned at the time. Later on, a junior sister came back from the town at the foot of the mountain and said many people there too had died, and there were earthquakes, buildings collapsed. Especially strange was that, about five kilometers from us, a Genetic Store appeared overnight,
The store owner bluntly told us that the end of the world had arrived, that in seven days, all creatures would undergo Genetic Mutation, and that we should prepare ourselves. At first, we didn't believe it..."
After hearing Lan Xin's account, the enigma of the apocalypse became clearer in Yang Xiao's mind.
Many people thought that they died from earthquakes during the apocalypse, but it now seemed that wasn't the case; at least from what happened to the Shenming Mountain Sect, they did not die from earthquakes.
If that conclusion holds, it means that the mysterious extraterrestrial civilization meticulously orchestrated the largest human extinction disaster in Earth's history.
Of course, Yang Xiao wouldn't say these things to Lan Xin nor to anyone else, until he could thoroughly investigate the ins and outs of the whole affair and had the capability to contend with this alien civilization, he would not disclose it to others.
Until then, he could only keep it buried in his heart.
Nowadays, not many people cared about the cause of this human catastrophe; everyone had accepted the disaster while desperately evolving their genes, hoping to acquire tremendous capabilities.
The apocalypse was a major disaster for all humanity, the worst of times, but for those who survived, it was also a tempting era, a turning point in life.
Who hasn't dreamed of having superpowers, of becoming a superstar admired by all?
And now, in this post-apocalyptic era of Genetic Evolution, the superhuman dream has almost become reality for everyone; it is an era of the transcendent.
