Chapter 406: Chapter 406: Another Failure of the Eye of Judgment
"Become the Demon King of Hell and come to Earth, only to be killed?" Upon hearing Mephisto's temptation, Steve was completely unmoved and instead retorted. If he were so easily tempted by the so-called eternal life, then he wouldn't be Steve.
"Eternal life?" Although Steve was not interested in Mephisto's offer of eternal life, it didn't mean that others weren't.
Of course, it wasn't Tony Stark or Bucky who were paying attention to Steve, but others who had also discovered Steve and the Joker's car.
This was the first effective communication between Mephisto and a human since the official forces discovered the Joker's car.
Previously, Mephisto had spoken, but it was only reciting lines from the Eye of Judgment. The high-ranking officials had no idea why a set of lines that seemed meaningless to them could become a lethal curse.
But now, eternal life had become the focus, and dealing with Mephisto was no longer as important. Even if Mephisto was a Hell Lord, they didn't care. As long as he could grant them eternal life, they were willing to pay any price.
Everyone has some fear of death, especially those with power and wealth. They naturally crave eternal life to maintain their current status and a healthy body.
As for Mephisto being from Hell, so what? It's not like they haven't dealt with Hellish forces before, especially in their research on demons; every faction has done it!
So, upon hearing Mephisto's words, some of their thoughts immediately changed. They no longer wanted to fight Mephisto; instead, they wanted to help him complete his plan to come to Earth in exchange for eternal life.
Neither Mephisto nor Steve knew about these thoughts. If Steve knew, he would just sneer, thinking that human greed sometimes surpasses that of demons.
And if Mephisto knew, he would probably play a fun game, completely manipulating these so-called human powerhouses.
"Interesting, but yes, with your willpower, such a little temptation indeed wouldn't work on you. So, do you have any wishes?" At this moment, Mephisto, hearing Steve's rejection and mockery, wasn't angry. He slowly walked towards Steve, smiling as he asked.
"Even if you don't care about your own life, don't you care about others' lives? You're already old, not far from death. What about the important people in your life? How far are they from death?"
Hearing Mephisto's words, Peggy Carter's image inevitably appeared in Steve's mind. Even though Steve knew this was Mephisto's temptation, he still couldn't help but feel affected. Just then, Mephisto got closer and closer to Steve.
"So, how about it? Serve me, sign this contract, become my follower, and I'll make you the Demon King of Hell with eternal life. I'll even give you a few spots so that they can also have eternal life..." Mephisto continued to tempt Steve, a contract forming in his hand, as he looked at Steve with a smile.
Unfortunately, with his flaming skull, no one could see Mephisto's smile. If not for his enchanting powers, his current appearance wouldn't be enough to influence Steve through words.
As Steve stood motionless, Peggy Carter's image constantly appearing in his mind, the contract in Mephisto's hand began to float towards Steve's palm. It seemed to have a small barb ready to pierce Steve's skin to complete the contract.
To be honest, Mephisto rarely used such direct means to deceive someone into signing a contract. He usually relied on trickery and other methods.
But Steve's soul was extremely tempting to Mephisto, and considering that Mephisto wasn't acting in his true form but had possessed the Joker, he had to break his principles a bit to quickly secure Steve's delicious soul.
After all, principles for a Hell Lord are made to be broken. Promises are like farts to them, and calling them deceitful is a compliment.
"Bang!" Unexpectedly, as the contract got closer to Steve, Steve suddenly woke up and smashed the contract with his shield, then struck Mephisto.
This strike didn't harm Mephisto but made his expression darken. His gaze on Steve became even more greedy.
Mephisto realized that it wasn't just the distance and Steve's strong will that made his enchantment fail. Steve's willpower was much stronger than he had anticipated.
If close-range enchantment couldn't work, Mephisto might need to use brute force.
"Bang!" With this thought, Mephisto's arm swung towards Steve's chest. Steve blocked it with his vibranium shield, but he was still sent flying.
"Interesting weapon. If my true form were here, your weapon would have shattered by now..." Mephisto raised an eyebrow at the vibranium shield and threw a flaming chain at Steve to pull him back.
"Clang!" But as the flaming chain swept towards Steve, Steve seemingly defied physics, kicking his shield mid-air to dodge and deflect the chain. The shield then returned to Steve's hand, and he landed perfectly, avoiding Mephisto's attack.
"Beautiful! An outstanding human. No, a truly exceptional human. If not limited by your strength, your achievements would be far greater!" Mephisto clapped in admiration, his gaze on Steve growing hotter.
"But how can such excellence be limited by a mere human body? You deserve greater power and a more perfect body..."
"Whoosh!" As Steve was about to speak, he was startled to see Mephisto turn into a flash of fire, appearing before him in an instant.
"Clap!" Mephisto grabbed Steve by the neck and lifted him. The skull's mouth curved slightly as he said, "See, no matter how strong or skilled you are, in the face of absolute power, you don't even have time to react."
"I'll give you one more chance. Serve me, and I'll make you a Hell Demon King with eternal life. But if you refuse, I'll just keep your soul for myself..."
"After all, no matter how strong your will is, your soul is still stained with sins. Taking your life is no different from those who came to die..."
"Bang!" Before Mephisto could finish, Steve somehow found the strength to swing his shield at Mephisto's head, causing sparks to fly.
At the same time, a group of mech suits flew over. They didn't use ranged attacks, fearing to hit Steve. Instead, they chose close combat to rescue him.
"Zzz!" Unfortunately, as the mechs neared Mephisto, hellfire erupted, instantly melting the high-temperature-resistant suits into molten iron.
This feat, impossible even for Johnny Storm's explosive flames, was achieved by Mephisto, proving the superiority of supernatural flames over Stark's expectations.
But Tony Stark didn't have time to dwell on this. He asked, "Jarvis! How long until the Saiyan arrives?"
"I've directed him to the location. With his speed, he should be here shortly!" Jarvis replied quickly.
Originally, they didn't plan to inform Robert, but the situation had become too dire, and Stark had to call him in to save the day.
"Looks like you've given up, but it's fine. When your soul is in Hell, you'll enjoy the days there!" After countering Stark and Steve's attacks, Mephisto twisted Steve's head and activated the Eye of Judgment.
"You are guilty!" Hellfire swirled in Mephisto's eyes as he stared into Steve's eyes, hoarsely saying, "Look into my eyes. Your soul is tainted by those you've killed. Feel their pain!"
In a daze, Steve saw those he had killed. Having grown up in war, Steve's hands were stained with more blood than many supervillains, so he saw countless souls...
These souls attacked Steve's soul, trying to drag him to Hell to become Mephisto's collection.
However, despite the pain and struggle, Steve's soul didn't waver! The Eye of Judgment had failed before, or rather, it had always failed on named individuals since coming to Earth. It seemed those who made a name in the supernatural world weren't so afraid of this supposedly unbeatable power.
Instead of using the Eye of Judgment on people like Steve or Batman, physical attacks would be more effective. These mental tests only made Steve and Batman's will stronger.
"Clack! Clack!" As Steve regained his senses, mechanical sounds came from his vibranium shield. A layer of armor covered Steve, a portable suit Tony Stark had built into the shield as a trump card.
While Tony hadn't perfected nanotech armor, this portable suit was inspired by Robert's wrist-mounted battle suit. Though its energy reserves were limited, it significantly boosted Steve's combat power.
In this world of extraordinary events, Steve's abilities were no longer outstanding, especially given his age. Stark felt he needed to prepare something for Steve to ensure his survival in missions.
"Boom!" As Steve equipped the suit, a bright energy beam from a jet hit Mephisto.
Bucky trusted Steve and had been waiting for this opportunity, successfully seizing it. As Steve's suit was equipped, the energy beam struck Mephisto, sending Steve flying and covering Mephisto in smoke.
"Good! Very good, truly impressive. Despite your weak power, you have so many tricks..." Mephisto's cold voice came from the smoke. "The Eye of Judgment had failed before, but only against the Ghost Rider. I didn't expect it to fail when I used it..."
"No matter. Keep failing, and maybe you'll get used to it," a mocking voice came from outside the smoke.
