Chapter 589: Chapter 589: Hulk Turns and Runs
In the aircraft hovering mid-air, Black Widow watched the battle scene below, feeling a wave of relief, followed by a hint of worry in her eyes. She was relieved because the current battle situation was evidently more favorable for Hulk. Peter Parker, now covered in Venom, looked battered and bruised. Despite Venom's terrifying regenerative abilities, it couldn't quickly restore his body.
This was primarily because Hulk's punches were too powerful and destructive. Without Venom's protection, Peter Parker would have been pounded into a pulp, just like those unfortunate government agents before him.
There was no denying it; Hulk's strength had increased significantly. Judging by Hulk's current size, it was clear how terrifying his power had become. When Hulk first appeared, he was less than 2.3 meters tall, but now he was nearly 3 meters. The exact amount of strength he had gained was hard to quantify.
Despite the seemingly favorable situation, Black Widow couldn't completely put her mind at ease. She could tell that Hulk was entirely out of control. Even she, with her rapport, couldn't bring him back to his senses.
Given the circumstances, the outcome of Hulk's fight with Peter Parker seemed inevitable: Peter Parker and Venom were doomed to die at Hulk's hands. This would lead to a complete fallout between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers.
Though Spider-Man had a significant reputation within the Avengers, only second to Tony Stark's Iron Man, Peter Parker's strength wasn't the top tier among them. If Peter Parker were killed, the Avengers would surely seek revenge against S.H.I.E.L.D. Hulk's displayed power was indeed formidable, and buildings around him crumbled like paper under his onslaught.
With each release of Hulk's power, the ground trembled, causing minor earthquakes. However, Black Widow believed that the destruction was still less terrifying than what the Saiyans had shown. Superman was a lesser concern as S.H.I.E.L.D. considered him an occasional ally of the Avengers. But the Saiyans were different. Previously, when several government agencies targeted the Avengers, the Saiyans intervened, brutally beating Blue Ridge.
Had it not been for the Martian Manhunter's intervention, Blue Ridge would have been obliterated, incapable of continuing to serve in any government agency. Moreover, the fight against Blue Ridge wasn't the Saiyans' limit. There had been a battle between a Saiyan and a mysterious powerhouse that threatened to destroy the Earth, forcing even Nick Fury to back down. Without absolute certainty, he dared not provoke the Saiyans and the Avengers again.
If anything happened to Peter Parker, the retribution awaiting Hulk and S.H.I.E.L.D. would be catastrophic. Black Widow's worry deepened, but she was helpless against the ongoing battle. She had tried calling out to Hulk, even using Bruce Banner's name, but nothing worked. Hulk's sole focus was to crush Peter Parker into a pulp, Venom included.
"Director, that's the situation. What should I do?" Normally, Black Widow wouldn't contact Nick Fury during an operation, being highly decisive in action. But this situation was beyond her control, prompting her to let Coulson hand the communication device to Nick Fury for a solution.
"He's really out of control? Hulk didn't respond to your voice at all?" Nick Fury was equally troubled, unsure of how to resolve the issue. He had ordered Bruce Banner's return, believing Black Widow could manage Hulk, minimizing potential damage.
However, this was Hulk's first mission, and it was already a disaster. Had Peter Parker not shown up, Hulk might have successfully located Dr. Lizard after dealing with numerous government agents.
Whether Hulk would capture Dr. Lizard successfully was uncertain. He might handle Dr. Lizard the same way he did Peter Parker, especially if Dr. Lizard resisted.
Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. had underestimated the complexity of extraordinary individuals, particularly those like Hulk and Bruce Banner, who couldn't fully control their powers. Losing control was common, leading many to fall into the dark world of extraordinary beings.
"No reaction at all. No matter what I say, he doesn't seem to hear me. It's like he can only see Spider-Man now," Black Widow replied with a heavy heart.
"Try opening fire! Spider-Man cannot die, at least not at our hands!" Nick Fury finally ordered after a moment of silence. He had seen the real-time footage from the aircraft, watching Peter Parker's worsening condition. He gritted his teeth and gave the command.
Nick Fury's order for Black Widow to open fire wasn't because he believed she could stop Hulk, but to distract Hulk and give Peter Parker a chance to escape. The potential aftermath of firing at Hulk was something Fury wasn't considering for the moment. If Hulk remained uncontrollable, he'd eventually target Black Widow too. But if this calmed Hulk slightly, they could later negotiate with him to mitigate the consequences of opening fire.
"Understood!" Black Widow took a deep breath, her eyes resolute. She fired at Hulk while shouting, "The sun's getting real low…"
With a thunderous roar, a heavy round hit Hulk, not harming him but sending Peter Parker flying, crashing into the ground.
"Damn it! I've never fought such a fierce battle in my life!" Venom grumbled, controlling Peter Parker's body to fight Hulk again despite the dire situation.
"Hulk?!" Hulk, hit by the fire, turned his gaze towards the aircraft, eyes filled with anger and confusion.
"Hulk! You can't kill him! You need to complete your mission!" Black Widow called out.
"Hulk!" But Hulk ignored her, roaring as he leapt again, not towards the aircraft, but straight at Peter Parker, aiming to finish him off.
Black Widow's heart sank, and she cried out, unable to bear watching what might happen next. She imagined the Saiyan destroying S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in retaliation.
"Am I going to die? This isn't how I imagined it…" Peter Parker muttered, watching Hulk descend upon him. Venom had enhanced him, but it wasn't enough.
"Facing a cheater, who gets stronger mid-fight, what would happen if he fought Robert?" Peter wondered, recalling Robert shaking his head at him in his mind. "Sorry for disappointing you, Robert…"
Just as Peter Parker's consciousness faded, a gust of wind and a warm energy enveloped him, restoring his strength.
"Why are you lying down? Get up and watch me avenge you!" a teasing voice called. Peter opened his eyes to see Robert floating mid-air.
"R-Robert? Saiyan? Why are you here?" Peter stammered, examining his wounds.
"You were about to die. Tony couldn't reach you, saw your beating on surveillance, and called me to save you," Robert explained, shaking his head. "But I didn't expect your opponent to be an old acquaintance."
Robert recognized Hulk, whose strength and aura had significantly grown. He remembered the two giant monsters from that fateful night.
Back then, Hulk's aura was on par with Abomination's, formidable but not unbeatable. Seeing Hulk now, it was clear his power had surged.
However, Robert had also grown stronger since then, ready to settle their unfinished business.
"Hulk!" Hulk, recognizing Robert, roared in fury. As he charged, his body expanded, and his aura intensified. But just before reaching Robert, Hulk suddenly turned and ran in the opposite direction.
