Chapter 172: Chapter 172 ⤞ Punching Roswaal… Again
Roswaal's silence made everyone more curious.
Emilia spoke up and asked, "Roswaal, where exactly is this place? Why is it called the Sanctuary?"
"How should I explain this—"
"Then let me explain it for ya!"
An arrogant and overbearing voice forcibly inserted itself into their conversation, interrupting Roswaal's explanation.
The sudden intruder made him smile bitterly once again. This person's appearance gave him a headache as well.
It was Frederica, the shark-toothed maid who served him, who scolded the rude newcomer, "Garfiel, you're being too disrespectful! These people are all Lord Roswaal's honored guests!"
"Sis! You who escaped from the Sanctuary alone have no right to lecture me!" As he spoke, a blond youth barged into the small cottage.
His height was similar to Subaru's, with the same golden hair and shark teeth as Frederica, but he also had a very conspicuous X-shaped white scar between his eyebrows.
Garfiel Tinzel. He appeared to be about 20 years old, but his actual age was less than 15, right in the midst of a stubborn, defiant rebellious phase.
Garfiel scrutinized everyone with fierce eyes. Though he called Frederica his sister, he showed no affection. As someone honored as the "Shield of Sanctuary", he had no reason to show a pleasant face to these intruders.
Even his own sister had been categorized by him as an outsider.
Frederica held her forehead and sighed. Over the past few days, she had made numerous attempts to communicate with her impatient and stubborn brother, but each attempt ended in failure. Children in their rebellious phase were truly difficult to persuade through words alone.
"I'm Garfiel, the shield protectin' this Sanctuary." He introduced himself arrogantly. Then, pointing at Roswaal, he said, "You outsiders wanna know what's goin' on with him, right? Let me explain it to ya."
"What's going on...?"
"Roswaal's injuries are the result of bein' rejected by the Trial! This Sanctuary has a barrier, and any half-blood who enters can't leave... that includes you, half-elf."
"It's Emilia!"
"Hmph! I don't care about that stuff!"
Frederica corrected Garfiel's rudeness, but received only a cold snort in response.
"This barrier only affects half-bloods, not normal humans! Kinda unfair, ain't it, Lady Emilia? To break the barrier, you gotta challenge the Trial at the tomb, but if regular humans try it, they get rejected... and end up like that."
As he spoke, Garfiel pointed at Roswaal, explaining to everyone what happens when ordinary people rashly force their way in.
"Don't worry, I've gathered all the villagers together. As long as they don't cause trouble, I won't harm them — three meals a day, room and board provided." Then he added fiercely, "But I have one demand — remove the Sanctuary's barrier! For that, Lady Emilia needs to take the Trial! Until the barrier is lifted, none of those villagers can leave! Of course, you yourselves can't leave either."
With that, he turned and left without lingering.
"Sister?! And also, the Trial... what Trial?" Emilia asked Frederica.
Garfiel had left immediately after speaking, leaving her completely confused.
Frederica's face showed discomfort. After hesitating for a long time, she stammered an explanation, "Actually, Garfiel and I are siblings... biological siblings! The T-Trial... it's difficult to explain clearly. So if possible, Lady Emilia should experience it for herself tonight to understand."
She didn't explain much, and Emilia didn't press further.
After all, this woman looked very upset, her face showing the pain of being misunderstood — how similar this was to her own past experiences.
Skipping this sensitive topic, Emilia asked again, "Is the Trial very difficult?"
"If it were simple, the Sanctuary's barrier would have been removed long ago."
"I see... Beatrice, do you know anything about the Trial and the barrier?" Emilia asked the loli Spirit.
Since Beatrice knew about the Sanctuary, she should also know about the barrier.
"Betty doesn't know anything about the Trial." She answered, following Adam's hint.
"There's no choice then, we'll just have to wait until tonight." The unknown puzzles kept piling up, leaving Emilia at a loss. For now, all she could do was wait for nightfall.
"Well~, now that we've concluded the matter of the Trial, may I ask Lady Emilia why you came to the Sanctuary~?" After this matter was settled, Roswaal spoke up, inquiring with apparent curiosity.
"Let me explain." As the only person who understood and participated in the entire course of events, Adam was most suitable for this task.
He immediately related everything that had happened after Roswaal disappeared.
Forming an alliance with the House Astrea, single-handedly defeating the White Whale, eliminating the Witch Cult's attack, destroying the Sin Archbishop of Sloth, being targeted by the Witch of Vainglory Pandora, and finally contracting with Beatrice to escape to the Sanctuary.
One incredible event after another came from his mouth, things that Roswaal found hard to believe. It nearly made him unable to resist pulling out the Book of Wisdom from under his bed to check.
"...Well, that's about it." Adam concealed the fact that Rem had died and been resurrected, telling Roswaal most of the events. He then suggested, "These eye-opening achievements can bring Emilia considerable fame. Roswaal, you should work hard to promote this — don't waste my efforts."
"Of course~, Carter has worked so hard, achieving what I couldn't, so I must promote it well~. Rest assured, I will certainly make good use of the opportunities you have created."
His exaggerated, insincere praise and affected manner — this man's "clown" persona continued.
It made Adam clearly understand that Roswaal had deliberately left Rem at the mansion. And not just Rem, he had abandoned Beatrice as well.
"You bastard!"
Without any regard for the injured clown before him, Adam delivered a heavy punch to his cheek!
Bang!
A muffled sound.
It came from between Adam's fist and Roswaal's cheek.
The punch was heavy and powerful, making the clown's lip split, leaving blood.
"Adam?!"
"Adam! Lord Roswaal!"
"Adam, Lord Roswaal!"
"Adam, what are you doing?"
Emilia, Ram, Rem, and even Beatrice cried out in shock.
They didn't understand why he suddenly erupted in violence when Roswaal had just promised to help.
"My, my, what's this situation~, Carter, should I take this as your dissatisfaction with me?"
"Sorry, seeing you, this clown, and considering what you've done, I just couldn't help but want to punch you." Adam apologized with an expressionless face.
He seemed to deliberately ignore all of Roswaal's "efforts", as if he were intentionally picking a fight.
"It's not like that, Roswaal." Emilia quickly defended him, "Adam is just being controlled by the Witch, that's why he's so impulsive. He's not usually like this, you know."
"Of course~, it is the Witch after all, and I know Carter isn't that kind of person~."
"No! I know exactly what I'm doing!" Adam's statement made everyone even more bewildered.
"Adam, Adam...?!"
"I'm sorry, but could I speak with Roswaal alone?"
"But you just..."
"Please don't worry, I'll control my emotions well, and I absolutely won't use force again." As he spoke, he gave Roswaal a meaningful look.
Having lived for 400 years, the shrewd man immediately understood that Adam wanted to speak with him, and joined in the plea.
"It's alright, Lady Emilia. I believe Carter won't resort to violence again."
"Since Roswaal says so..." Even the person who was hit said this, so Emilia couldn't argue further. She said, "Then please don't fight anymore, get along well, okay?"
"Mm."
"Please rest assured~."
With the assurance from both men, Emilia left the room, along with everyone else, leaving just the two of them in the narrow cottage.
"So~, what does Carter want to talk to me about~?"
"Let's negotiate, Roswaal! Let's bring your 400-year life to an end, just like we did with Beatrice." Adam's words were shocking.
This statement truly left Roswaal speechless.
400 years! This hidden timespan was a secret unknown even to Beatrice, known only to him!
Yet, it was spoken aloud by the man before him!
Disregarding Adam's presence, Roswaal hurriedly pulled out a book from his bed — Book of Wisdom (Imperfect Edition).
He flipped through it quickly, searching carefully, but couldn't find anything. Without the confidence of knowing everything, he was now extremely flustered, his facial expression completely betraying him.
Meanwhile, Adam was just quietly waiting. Waiting for him to discover and clearly understand the fact that this wasn't in the book.
After a while, he stopped.
"Well? This future isn't in the book, is it?"
"...Indeed. But I'm curious, how does Carter know about this?" Without his strange intonation, the clown's visage also dissipated. He no longer disguised himself as a clown, but as Roswaal.
"Well, who knows? Maybe I learned it from Echidna."
"...It seems the negotiation Carter mentioned is something I can look forward to."
"Ah, about that, please let me take care of something first."
"What is it?"
As Roswaal watched curiously, Adam vanished from his sight in a flash, only to reappear three seconds later with a tall, mature, beautiful woman in his arms.
—Elsa Granhiert, The Bowel Hunter.
"Really, I detected you were here as soon as I arrived. I was surprised." Looking at the voluptuous beauty who clung tightly to him, Adam felt joy in his heart.
Honestly, he had thought Elsa would be killed, and had given up hope. She had faced the Witch of Vainglory Pandora, a witch that even Reinhard might not be able to defeat!
He never expected Elsa to appear here. She must have been summoned by Roswaal.
Though he didn't know her purpose, this situation actually gave Adam the upper hand in negotiations.
"Hm hm hm~ The Bowel Hunter isn't so easy to kill." As she spoke, Elsa bit his collarbone, continuing until blood flowed, then extended her tongue to lick the wound she had created.
Seeing the intimacy between the two, Roswaal's expression changed dramatically. If he didn't understand the relationship between these two now, those 400 years would truly have been wasted.
So Adam was the one secretly controlling everything!
"This is quite surprising, Carter." He, who had been confident before, now looked at the pair with deep caution.
To convince everyone, he had pretended to be seriously injured. Otherwise, he would certainly have fled from here!
"Don't be nervous, Roswaal. I just want to negotiate with you."
"Then I'll listen attentively... or rather, in this situation, I have no choice but to listen."
"Ah, then I won't hold back. But before we start formal negotiations, I have a few questions I'd like to ask you."
"Feel free to ask. If it's something I know, I'll tell Carter anything." Roswaal lay back on the bed, appearing to surrender himself to the other's manipulations.
Elsa left Adam's embrace, but stood behind his chair and wrapped her arms around him, placing his head against her towering bosom, a sweet fragrance wafting toward him.
Finding a comfortable position, he asked, "Was the Witch Cult attack your doing?"
"No, I only received intelligence about it." Roswaal shook his head in denial, not appearing to be lying.
"Why did you take the villagers? Don't say you cared about their survival; that doesn't match your character."
"Taking them was merely to have a reason for Lady Emilia to come to the Sanctuary."
"Was it to coerce her? Then, why didn't you take Rem?"
"Leaving Rem behind was deliberately to attract the Witch Cult's attention. With her bone-deep hatred for the Witch Cult, she was the perfect candidate."
"You deliberately abandoned Betty too, didn't you?"
"Yes. If Beatrice had simply disappeared, it would have been mercy for her. However..." Roswaal continued with a surprised expression, "I never expected Carter would eventually contract with Beatrice, freeing her from her constraints. Honestly, seeing her so happy makes me jealous to the point of madness."
"Jealousy can't solve any problems, Roswaal." Adam paused, then said, "Now, let's formally begin our negotiation."
"Please."
"Emilia will challenge the Trials next. During her completion of the Trials, I won't allow you to make any underhanded moves. Of course, I won't help her either."
"I'm sorry, but I can't do that." Roswaal raised the book in his hand, "I will follow everything in this book, even if it costs me my life!"
He spoke decisively, not caring even for his own life.
"I will not hesitate to end your life. Now, if you're planning to make it snow in the Sanctuary, I can accept that. But understand this clearly — I will not permit any other interference!"
"You even know that?! But why should I agree? For my lifelong wish, I'm capable of anything!"
"Lifelong wish..." Adam interrupted him, "Roswaal, your wish is to resurrect the Witch of Greed, Echidna, right?"
"You know this too... Yes, that's right! I'll do anything to resurrect her!"
"Then, what if I said I might be able to resurrect Echidna?"
"What?!" Roswaal excitedly sat up, then lay back down again, "How would Carter convince me of that? How would you prove it?"
"Proof... Elsa was originally an assassin you sent to kill Emilia, right? You probably recalled her to assassinate again." Adam pointed at Elsa standing behind him, "Actually, I killed her at the beginning, but then I resurrected her. The same with Rem, who was killed by the Witch Cult but resurrected by me. Of course, if you don't believe me, you can ask others. After all, it's a fact everyone witnessed, something that can't be denied."
"...Time after time you say things that surprise me. I truly don't know how to express my feelings now." Having been shocked so many times, Roswaal didn't know how to respond.
Resurrecting the dead! Something even his teacher Echidna couldn't accomplish, something he had never heard of in his 400 years!
But Roswaal was certain that Adam could indeed resurrect the dead. Because he wouldn't tell such an easily disprovable lie!
"Very well, I'll believe you! But regarding the snow in the Sanctuary, I won't change my mind!" After a moment's thought, Roswaal agreed to this incredibly tempting condition.
But he was also preparing a backup plan. Because in his heart, the book's arrangements were more absolute than Adam's words.
"Then, do we have a deal?"
"We have a deal!"
The two clasped hands.
