Chapter 32 - The Battle of Linzi City (5)
When Guan Yu set fire to the armory, Hudang was leisurely enjoying a banquet.
“Hahaha, that’s right. Come, pour a cup of wine for this old Governor of Qing Province!”
As he held out his cup, the courtesan beside him poured the wine.
Hudang’s eyes scanned the courtesan’s face and body, and with a satisfied smile, he beckoned her with his hand.
“You shall enter this old man’s bedchamber tonight.”
As the courtesan shyly nodded her head slightly, Hudang heartily tore into meat, drank wine, and hummed a tune.
“That Kong Rong fellow is barely holding on with just Jibei Commandery, and the imperial court is busy suppressing the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Now it’s only a matter of time before Qing Province falls into my hands! But the matter isn’t settled yet, so don’t get completely drunk.”
As Hudang finished speaking, the other generals also enjoyed the banquet, continuously drinking wine.
If things weren’t going well, some negative words would have come out even at a banquet, but now the situation was very favorable, with Qing Province almost within their grasp.
With alcohol added to the mix, a very cordial atmosphere formed among them.
“Instructor Shang, let’s keep up the good work!”
“Once Lord Governor of Qing Province (Hudang) drives out that Kong Rong fellow, our world will unfold right away.”
“Next time, I hope we can behead that Kong Rong bastard and have a grand celebration.”
Hudang even began to think that if he kept going well like this, he might someday become the emperor.
However, thinking it was still too premature, he decided to make a grand declaration after fully occupying Qing Province.
‘Once I take all of Qing Province, everyone here will follow me.’
The world was already in too much chaos, and the emperor was stuck with the Ten Attendants, only engaging in selling offices and ranks, with no signs of improvement.
What if he rose up based on Qing Province at such a time?
Just thinking about it sent a thrilling sensation up his spine.
As everyone was enjoying themselves, suddenly the door opened and a military officer hurriedly entered.
“We have a big problem, Lord Governor of Qing Province! The armory is on fire, and our weapons are burning fiercely!”
Upon hearing those words, Hudang and the other generals instantly sobered up.
Until just a moment ago, they had been optimistic about taking Qing Province without any issues, but now the armory was on fire?
Hudang was dumbfounded by what was happening, but as a military commander who had been through many battlefields:
“Left Commander! Take your troops immediately and put out the fire at the armory!! We can’t fight if our weapons burn!”
“Yes, understood!”
With those words, the Left Commander hurriedly ran out with his subordinate officers.
“North Commander, take your troops and strictly guard the city walls! Right Commander, execute anyone causing disturbances and riots inside Linzi City and maintain order! The enemy can’t be many, so once we control the chaos, the problem will be quickly resolved.”
It was a fairly astute insight, befitting the leader of a rebel army that had almost taken Qing Province.
The generals were able to maintain some composure despite the confusion, seeing his demeanor.
They believed that if they trusted Hudang’s judgment, they could easily overcome even a major crisis.
“Good, then hurry to your positions and carry out your duties!”
However, when misfortune starts to strike, it tends to pile up.
“We have another big problem! Now the food warehouse has started burning! The fire is so fierce that we can’t even attempt to put it out.”
Hearing this, some of the generals slumped to the floor.
Even if they lost some weapons, they could fight with farm tools instead, as the saying goes, “gums instead of teeth.”
But if they lost food, the soldiers would starve.
Once the soldiers started starving, it was clear as day that they would rebel against Hudang and the leadership, and the army would start to crumble.
Hudang felt dizzy, but he managed to hold on somehow.
‘If I show signs of wavering here, it’s over.’
“Right Commander, North Commander, hurry and put out the fire at the food warehouse! We must protect the food at all costs! Everyone here, go out and focus on extinguishing the fire!”
As Hudang said this, the Right Commander and North Commander were about to rush out.
At that moment, another soldier came running, panting heavily.
“Lord Governor of Qing Province!! Lord Governor!! We have a big problem!! A large enemy army has appeared near Linzi City! We don’t know how many there are, but judging by the loudness of their war cries, their morale seems very high!”
Until now, he had held on with the thought that he was the leader of this city and the future Governor of Qing Province.
But now, hearing that a large enemy army was approaching, even Hudang staggered, unable to keep his composure.
“Aaargh! Kong Rong!! You son of a bitch, Kong Rong!!”
Screaming in anguish and venting his anger, Hudang finally drew his sword and ordered:
“Extinguishing the fires at the food warehouse and armory is important, but if the city falls, it’s all over! Leave only the minimum number of men to put out the fires!! Send all the rest of the soldiers up to the city walls! If the enemy’s large army takes advantage of this situation to attack, we’re finished!”
City walls exert their powerful force only when sufficient soldiers are deployed to defend them.
City walls without defending troops are merely slightly taller fenced enclosures.
So Hudang had no choice but to sacrifice food and weapons to protect Linzi City above all else.
‘If we lose the city, it’s all over.’
“Take all the soldiers except my 200 personal guards! Do whatever it takes to defend Linzi City and catch the spies!”
The North Commander, Left Commander, and Right Commander rushed off as quickly as possible to carry out their assigned tasks.
If the city fell here, not only Hudang but they themselves would be as good as dead.
At this time, Liu Bei and Guan Yu were running with their volunteer troops towards the mansion in the center of the city where Hudang was staying.
**
“Dun Zhang Guan!”
I shouted at the guy who called me that.
“In this city, I am Instructor Huan Hu! Get your head straight!”
The guy who got scolded replied loudly after hearing those words.
“I’m sorry!”
“Instructor, we have a big problem! Besides the armory, smoke is rising heavily from other places too. And the soldiers are moving about very urgently.”
The guy was pretending to speak in quite an urgent voice, but his face was full of smiles.
Well, the fact that the city’s soldiers are moving so urgently and that even the food warehouse besides the armory is on fire… it’s proof that our plan has succeeded perfectly.
It would be strange not to be happy.
“Hurry up! We need to find Hudang as quickly as possible!”
And so we ran quickly with our weapons to find the government office where Hudang would be staying.
On the way, we encountered units ranging from a few to about a hundred men, but.
I avoided fighting as much as possible by making excuses that I needed to receive orders directly from Hudang or pretending to urgently go elsewhere.
Fighting in this narrow city could lead to unnecessary deaths.
‘Being brave is different from being stupid.’
It’s stupid to fight in a situation where anyone can see you’re likely to die in vain, and it’s brave to risk your life fighting in a situation worth dying for.
I have no intention of being a fool, so this must be the right way.
As we kept running, Liu Bei and Zhang Fei eventually joined us.
“Un-, I mean, Instructor!”
I thought they might not be able to join us until we beheaded Huan Hu, but to think we’d meet up like this here.
This is quite lucky.
“We need to find Hudang quickly!”
“Understood! Let’s go!”
Our Liu Bei army arrived as quickly as possible at the government office where Hudang was, amidst this chaotic situation.
As befitting an office used by the Governor of Qing Province, who is nominally the leader of Qing, there was a tall main gate standing imposingly.
And guarding the gate were soldiers fully armed with armor and weapons.
“I am Instructor Huan Hu! I can’t find my direct superior, the Left Commander, so I’ve come to receive orders from Lord Hudang. Open the gate!”
“I’ll go in and check for a moment, please wait a bit.”
Has security been tightened because things have gone awry like this?
Well, it doesn’t matter.
Once they open the main gate of the office, we’ll have to engage in full-scale battle from here anyway.
As one of the soldiers guarding the gate was about to open it and go in, Zhang Fei and I simultaneously killed two soldiers near the gate.
Though we hadn’t planned it, we both kicked open the gate at the same time and declared:
“I, Zhang Yide, general of Lord Liu Xuande, have come to take the head of Hudang, the rebel leader.”
“Following Lord Liu Xuande’s orders, I will personally behead Hudang.”
With that declaration, led by the two of us, Liu Bei’s army began to thoroughly search the government office, killing Hudang’s personal guards one by one.
It would have been fitting for Hudang himself to come out and cross swords with us.
Instead of fighting us, the bastard was just running around trying to escape.
Finally, he ended up being surrounded by us.
“Lord Xuande, let’s behead the bastard. Then you will become the greatest merit subject for quelling this rebellion.”
Hearing my words, Liu Bei beheaded Hudang without hesitation.
As soon as we beheaded him, we immediately hung his head on a spear and were able to obtain the surrender of all the soldiers in Linzi City.
