Chapter 3: CH 3: The second sim
In Scott's room, it was late at night. The almost full moon was out, and its light came in through the window.
Scott paced around, breathing unevenly. Outside, dogs barked and howled in the distance. The sounds were loud and constant, overwhelming his senses. He tried calming down like Asher told him to, but it wasn't working. His heart raced faster with every step.
He stopped pacing and looked out the window at the moon. A few seconds passed, then he suddenly turned and left the house. He ran toward the woods with incredible speed, his claws already extended. He had started to transform.
—————————
At that same moment, Asher was in his apartment. He had just finished unpacking and was lying on his bed, finally done.
A system screen appeared in front of him.
[Host, it is midnight. You have gained your daily SP.]
Asher glanced at it.
"I thought you said I needed to kill to get SP."
[You also get daily SP. But it is advised you save some so you can buy more simulation worlds. You can also use SP to unlock an extra reward when a simulation ends.]
"So why didn't you say any of this earlier?"
The screen stayed silent.
He sighed. "I still have the Underworld sim, right?"
[Yes. Would you like to start an Underworld simulation for one SP?]
"Yeah. Start it."
The system finished loading and Asher stayed still on the bed, eyes focused on the screen in front of him.
[Congratulations on gaining your first trait]
[UNDERWORLD LIFE SIMULATION
Name: Asher Caelan
Race: Werewolf (born)
Trait: Strength III
Born: 1905
Location: Bohemian countryside near Prague]
Asher paused before reading any further.
"What's a trait system?" he asked.
[A trait is something characters in your simulation have a chance to receive at birth. Traits vary by race, and they are divided into eight tiers. Each tier is stronger than the last. The current known tiers are: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII]
"Oh, okay. I get it," Asher said with a nod.
He scrolled down and continued reading the simulation.
[Year 0]
Asher is born during a silent snowfall. His eyes are open and alert the moment he enters the world. His grip is unnaturally strong. His body temperature runs high. The midwife says nothing but leaves quickly.
[Year 1]
He walks before crawling. Never cries. Never sick. His father notices that his grip can bruise. His mother begins watching him with quiet concern.
[Year 2]
He picks up a wooden chair with one hand. The family dog refuses to go near him. Animals grow cautious around him even when he does nothing.
[Year 3]
He begins moving with deliberate balance. He throws another boy several feet during a fall while playing. The boy breaks a bone. Adults say he doesn't know his own strength. His parents no longer let him out of their sight in town.
[Year 4]
During the full moon, his first partial transformation occurs. His skin shifts. Nails turn to claws. He does not lose consciousness. The change fades without injury. He is calm the entire time.
[Year 5]
His strength reaches a level most adults would struggle to match. He lifts crates and sacks without effort. His reflexes begin to sharpen. He rarely speaks and never shows fear.
[Year 6]
Three wolves attack a nearby farm. Asher tracks and kills one with his bare hands. His wounds begin healing within hours. He shows no pain or fear throughout the incident.
[Year 7]
A silver brooch burns his skin. He hides the pain and removes it himself. His parents lock away all silver after that. His resistance is stronger than most Lycans his age.
[Year 8]
A traveler with an unusual scent watches him for too long. Asher remains quiet and observes without approaching. That night, his father patrols the house until morning.
[Year 9]
He begins controlling his senses and form at will. Shifts parts of his body for training. His speed, balance, and endurance begin to outclass adults. His hearing isolates sound patterns across the forest.
[Year 10]
He carves a symbol of a claw into the barn wall with one hand. It cuts clean through the wood. His parents treat him with quiet distance. No one in the village challenges or approaches him anymore.
[Year 11]
Asher begins hunting alone, deep into the woods beyond where any locals dare go. He catches prey with precision and speed. He brings back only what's needed. His father notices that he's now faster than any horse on their land. His mother avoids eye contact for the rest of the season.
[Year 12]
The old well near the back fields collapses. A workhorse falls in. Asher climbs down alone and lifts the panicked animal enough for ropes to be secured. The villagers watch in silence. Later, several men are overheard saying they will not cross him again.
[Year 13]
Asher encounters a wounded Lycan in the woods. The creature is feral, unable to control its shift. Asher subdues it with force but does not kill it. The Lycan flees. He returns home without injury and says nothing to anyone.
[Year 14]
He begins shifting entirely at will, even outside the moon cycle. The transformations are clean and painless. He starts training himself using logs, stones, and animal carcasses. His claws can split thick timber. His sprint leaves no sound on snow or soil.
[Year 15]
A new priest arrives in the village and stirs old fears. Rumors return about beasts in the woods. Asher is watched. One night, the chapel burns. No proof is found. The villagers say it was an accident. No one questions him.
[Year 16]
He follows a scent trail unlike any before. It leads to a burial site in the forest, long abandoned. Inside is a sealed coffin layered in silver-lined roots. He does not touch it. He marks the area and leaves, sensing that it is not for him.
[Year 17]
A caravan of armed men passes through. Their weapons are silver. Their scent is unnatural. One of them stops at his home, looking for shelter. Asher stands behind the door and listens to every word. The man leaves without stepping inside.
[Year 18]
His body reaches full physical maturity. He now towers over grown men and can lift double what he did at age ten. His control is perfect. He shifts to his full werewolf form and returns without damage or exhaustion. No one sees it happen.
[Year 19]
A girl in the village goes missing. Search parties return empty. Asher finds her near a ravine, being circled by wolves. He drags her out without violence and returns her home. Her father gives him a sack of coin. He leaves it on their doorstep and never speaks to them again.
[Year 20]
A small detachment of vampires is seen crossing through a pass in the next valley. They do not stop, but they move with purpose. Asher watches them from the trees. He memorizes their movement and their leader's face. He senses something is coming, but not yet. Not here.
[Year 21]
Asher crosses paths with a Lycan scout moving alone through the high woods. They don't fight. The scout recognizes something in him and leaves a small crest stone behind, marked with a forgotten northern clan sigil. Asher keeps it buried under a tree root.
[Year 22]
The nearby town holds a public hanging for a man accused of bestial attacks. Asher watches from the trees. The accused was not a werewolf. Asher confirms this by scent. He begins observing townspeople more closely, learning their patterns, their fears, and how easily they are led.
[Year 23]
A vampire noblehouse convoy passes near the southern road. Their scent lingers for days. He finds one of their scouts impaled on a tree, silver dagger still glowing. The killing was clean. Not his work. He realizes others are hunting close now.
[Year 24]
A Lycan tracker appears near the village border. Unlike the scout before, this one is hostile. Asher disables him quickly and sends him back alive, injured but breathing. A warning, not a kill. The message is received. No more trackers come.
[Year 25]
Asher discovers a hidden blood storage site buried beneath an old trade route tunnel. It's vampire work. The place is abandoned, but the markings are fresh. He collapses the tunnel with brute force, sealing it permanently.
[Year 26]
The first snowfall is late. The forest feels wrong. Asher finds an injured child near a frozen creek. No one from the village claims her. She vanishes the next morning, leaving claw prints that do not match any animal he knows. He begins setting traps again.
[Year 27]
He relocates his home deeper into the forest, building a hidden den reinforced with stone and earth. The old farmhouse remains standing but empty. He visits his parents rarely. They have aged sharply, but they live in peace. No one dares speak their family name anymore.
[Year 28]
A Death Dealer passes through the area, part of an advance scouting unit. Asher follows without being seen. The vampire never notices. The only time he shifts that year is to leap a canyon silently before vanishing into a snowstorm.
[Year 29]
He finds a pack of wild Lycans near the western hills. They are young, turned recently, barely stable. He does not kill them. He leaves food in their path, forces them out of proximity to the villages, and watches from a distance. They never see him.
[Year 30]
He crosses into an old battlefield from the vampire-Lycan war. The scent of rot and silver still hangs in the soil. Dozens of bones remain unclaimed. He marks the field with stones, not out of grief, but as a warning to anyone who might disturb it. That night, he does not return to his den. He waits by the field until dawn, unmoving.
[Year 31]
A group of vampires begins expanding into the region. At first, their influence is subtle. Merchants begin vanishing. Travelers report pale figures watching from rooftops. Asher senses the shift and returns to the outer forest. He prepares.
[Year 32]
Two villagers go missing near the old trade road. Horses are found drained, their bodies placed carefully as if arranged. Asher follows the scent and finds fresh vampire tracks near the hills. He patrols every night. The forest starts to change.
[Year 33]
Scouts begin entering the territory. Small groups, well-trained. Asher kills them quickly and without hesitation. Their bodies are left deep in the woods. The villagers hear rumors but nothing is confirmed. The ground around the Caelan home grows quiet.
[Year 34]
A noble vampire approaches. She carries silver knives and moves with speed and confidence. Asher wounds her during the first strike and finishes the fight in the river. Her body is buried beneath stone. The river runs darker for a week.
[Year 35]
Five attackers strike a farm on the northern edge. Asher is waiting. The fight leaves the barn in ruins. Two vampires escape, but neither returns. The people say nothing. They know who protected them.
[Year 36]
A cloaked vampire armed with a silver whip enters the territory. The battle begins in the trees and ends in the mud. Asher suffers deep wounds across his back. He breaks the vampire's spine on a boulder and collapses nearby. He heals, but slower than before.
[Year 37]
He begins walking through the village during the day. No one speaks. Everyone watches. Children are told not to stare. No attacks occur that year. He rebuilds parts of the outer wall with his bare hands. His hair begins to gray near the roots.
[Year 38]
Crows with cut tongues are found hanging from trees. Blood is drawn into symbols across the farmland. Asher destroys them all and burns the roots beneath each tree. A new coven is testing him.
[Year 39]
Three vampires arrive at night. They move like shadows and strike from all sides. Asher kills two. The third flees. He spends the night digging a trench around the forest edge. The trench is filled with oil and iron stakes.
[Year 40]
No attacks. No sightings. Only silence. He waits every night beneath the old pine near the road. His claws stay extended for hours. His body begins to stiffen from the cold. He trains harder.
[Year 41]
A new vampire stalks the area. Young, fast, careful. Asher follows blood trails to nowhere. He never finds a body. The scent is clean. This one is different. It does not leave mistakes.
[Year 42]
A coordinated strike hits the eastern ridge. Three attackers, all with silver blades. Asher kills one and throws another into a frozen lake. The third escapes. He begins coughing up blood at night. His wounds heal, but not fully.
[Year 43]
The vampire lord Varos enters the region. Older than most, wearing dark armor and carrying a silver longsword engraved with runes. Asher finds signs of movement in the hills. His traps are disarmed before he reaches them.
[Year 44]
Varos sets fire to the fields surrounding the village. Six villagers die. Asher arrives too late. He finds Varos near the ridge and engages him. The fight is long. Both are wounded. Varos escapes with a shattered leg. Asher collapses beneath a tree and does not move until morning.
[Year 45]
The last winter comes. Asher rebuilds his spear and sharpens every tool he owns. The wind carries ash for days. He walks the borders in full form, his breath slow, his eyes hollow. The forest holds its breath.
[Year 46]
Varos returns under the blood moon. The fight begins near the well. It lasts until the ground is soaked and the trees crack. Asher breaks Varos's arm, but Varos drives the silver sword into Asher's heart. No words are spoken. No screams are heard. Asher dies standing, facing his killer. His body is left where it fell. A black pine grows over the grave without planting.
[Please choose your reward:
1 - Strength III (Trait)
2 - Asher Caelan's life fighting experience (46 years)
3 - Asher Caelan's wooden spear (+1 percent damage to vampires)]
Asher sucked in a sharp breath. "Alright, two good ones and one absolutely amazing one." He said sarcastically as he started at the wooden spear.
He stared at the screen, conflicted.
"I know I need fighting experience… but the trait," he thought, groaning internally. "Ahhh, this is killing me."
"Forget it," he finally muttered and tapped on the first option.
[Strength III selected]
[Would you like to be knocked out while the trait is being integrated?]
Asher blinked. "Was this always an option?"
[Yes, host]
"…Right. Yes, knock me out," he said, settling back on the bed. "Also, how long will I be knocke ou-"
Before he could even finish the sentence, the system activated the process, and Asher blacked out instantly.
