Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The Edge of Darkness

Chapter 5: The Edge of Darkness

The night outside the warehouse was unnaturally still. No wind, no chirping insects—just an eerie silence pressing against the walls.

Inside, Scott and his pack sat in a rough circle, their bodies still aching from the Hunter Leader's brutal training session. Their clothes were damp with sweat, bruises forming beneath torn fabric.

The Hunter Leader stood before them, arms crossed, his gaze piercing.

> "Tonight, you face your first real test."

Scott narrowed his eyes. "I thought we already did."

The Hunter Leader chuckled, shaking his head. "No. That was me showing you how weak you are."

His expression hardened.

> "Now, I'm going to see if you're strong enough to survive."

A weight settled in Scott's gut. He glanced at his pack—Allison, rubbing her sore arm; Lydia, lips pressed into a thin line; Malia, already cracking her knuckles in anticipation. Stiles, on the other hand, looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here.

Stiles sighed. "Why do I have a bad feeling about this?"

The Hunter Leader turned, grabbing a wooden crate from the shadows. He kicked it open—and inside lay a collection of weapons. Guns, knives, crossbows, vials of strange glowing liquid.

Scott tensed. "You expect us to use those?"

The Hunter Leader smirked. "I expect you to live."

The Hunt Begins

They traveled deep into the woods, moving silently under the moon's pale glow.

The Hunter Leader led them through a hidden path, the trees growing thicker, the air growing heavier—as if something unseen was watching.

Scott's wolf senses screamed at him. Something was wrong.

Then—he smelled it.

Rot. Blood. Death.

He stopped, fists clenching.

Lydia shuddered, pressing a hand to her temple. "There's something here."

The Hunter Leader nodded. "Good. You're sensing it."

Stiles gulped. "Sensing what exactly?"

The Hunter Leader knelt, dragging his fingers through the dirt. He lifted them, sniffed the soil.

His expression darkened.

> "A demon."

Silence.

Then—

Malia growled, her claws sliding out. "Where?"

The Hunter Leader tossed a blade to Scott. The Alpha caught it instinctively.

> "That's what you're going to find out."

Scott stared at him. "You're throwing us into a fight with a demon?"

The Hunter Leader smirked. "You said you were ready. Prove it."

Then—he was gone.

Scott cursed. Of course, he left them.

A branch snapped.

The air shifted, growing colder.

A low, wet growl echoed through the trees.

Lydia's breath hitched. "It's here."

The First Encounter

It came from the shadows—a towering figure, its body wrapped in black mist. Its eyes glowed a sickly yellow, its mouth twisted into a jagged grin.

Scott stepped forward, blade clenched in his fist.

The creature tilted its head, as if studying him. Then—

It moved.

Fast.

Scott barely raised his weapon in time before clawed fingers swiped at his throat. Sparks flew as the blade met corrupted flesh.

Scott grunted, stumbling back. "It's strong—"

The demon roared, the sound vibrating through their bones.

Malia leaped—her claws ripped into its side, but the wound sealed instantly.

Allison fired an arrow—it passed right through the creature.

Stiles swore. "That's not fair!"

The demon's hand shot out, grabbing Malia by the throat. Her eyes widened as it lifted her effortlessly.

Scott's heart pounded.

> "Let her go!"

The demon's grin widened—then, it threw her.

Malia crashed into a tree, coughing violently.

Scott snapped. His Alpha roar shook the trees, his eyes glowing like burning coals. He charged—slamming the blade deep into the demon's chest.

The creature hissed.

Black veins crawled from the wound—but it didn't fall.

> "That's not enough."

Scott froze.

The Hunter Leader's voice whispered in his ear—but he was nowhere to be seen.

Scott clenched his teeth. Then what?!

His instincts screamed—move!

He twisted just as the demon's claws sliced through the air, barely missing his neck.

Lydia cried out, grabbing her head. "It's… feeding off the fear—"

The Hunter Leader's voice echoed again.

> "Then take away its food."

Scott's mind clicked.

Fear. It was feeding off their fear.

He exhaled, steadied himself.

Then—he let go of the fear.

The demon flinched.

Scott's eyes flashed brighter.

Allison saw it too. She took a breath, aimed again—this time, with no hesitation.

The arrow struck true.

The demon shrieked, stumbling back.

Scott didn't let up. He drove the blade deeper, snarling.

Then, finally—the demon dissolved into nothing.

Aftermath

The forest was silent once more.

Scott panted, dropping the blade. His heart hammered.

The Hunter Leader stepped out from the shadows, slow clapping.

> "Not bad."

Scott's eyes snapped to him, frustration flaring. "You were watching?!"

The Hunter Leader grinned. "Of course. Had to see if you'd figure it out."

Malia groaned. "You could've helped."

He shrugged. "And robbed you of the lesson? No chance."

Scott wiped his face, anger boiling—but deep down, he understood.

They had fought a demon—and survived.

It wasn't luck.

It was growth.

The Hunter Leader turned, glancing at the sky.

> "You have potential. But potential isn't enough."

He looked back at them, expression unreadable.

> "The real war hasn't even begun yet."

Scott frowned. "Then what's next?"

The Hunter Leader grinned.

> "Now? Now we get serious."
