Chapter 35: Chapter 35: "The Tensions Build"
The days passed slowly, the village growing more vibrant with each passing moment. Kaito had adjusted to his new role as village chief, though not without his fair share of awkward encounters. But nothing had prepared him for the current tension between Althea and Arielle.
It wasn't long after their initial meeting that the two women had started making subtle jabs at each other—at first playful, but now beginning to feel more like an unspoken rivalry. Kaito found himself caught between them, unsure how to handle the delicate balance of their differing personalities.
One evening, as the sun set and the village settled into a quieter rhythm, Kaito found himself walking through the village square with Althea by his side. Her presence, strong and commanding as always, seemed to fill the air with an unspoken tension that Kaito couldn't ignore.
"So," Althea began, glancing at him with a smirk, "what exactly is the plan here, Kaito? You've got a village, you've got her," she added, nodding toward Arielle, who was working nearby. "What are we doing now?"
Kaito rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "I... don't know. Honestly, I didn't plan for any of this."
"Doesn't seem like it," Althea said with a chuckle. "You're just stumbling along, aren't you?"
"I guess," Kaito muttered, a little defensively. "But I'm trying to make it work. For everyone."
Althea raised an eyebrow. "Trying? What exactly is 'trying' supposed to mean? You've got a village full of people, and you're the chief. What are you going to do about it?"
Before Kaito could answer, a shrill voice interrupted their conversation.
"There you are!" Arielle appeared from the shadows, her three tails swishing behind her as she walked toward them, a bright smile on her face. "I was starting to think you two were avoiding me."
Althea let out a low chuckle. "Avoiding you? Kaito's been avoiding everyone since I showed up."
Kaito winced. "That's not true."
"Oh, it's not?" Arielle teased, glancing at Kaito and then at Althea. "So, what are we doing now, Kaito? More 'thinking'? Maybe you've had enough of that for a while."
Kaito sighed, feeling like he was being pulled into an endless cycle of teasing and jabs. "I'm not avoiding anyone," he said, his voice firm. "But maybe it's time we all figured out how to work together, for the good of the village."
Both women looked at him for a moment, their faces unreadable.
Arielle finally broke the silence. "Oh, we'll work together all right. You just wait and see."
Kaito shot her a confused glance. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Arielle smiled brightly, her sharp green eyes sparkling with amusement. "You'll see soon enough."
The tension between the three of them hung in the air like an unseen weight, and Kaito couldn't help but wonder if it would ever ease. He had never been good at handling personal conflicts—he had always been more focused on saving the world than on personal relationships.
And now, in this strange village, with two women vying for his attention—one from his past and one from his present—he was unsure what direction to take.
