Chapter 2: Chapter 2: The Past of the Anderson Family
No one moved; everyone froze in place for at least half an hour... well, it was actually only about ten seconds.
Albert bent down and picked up the pale yellow envelope. It was an unstamped letter with a line written in emerald green ink. He read it out softly:
The cupboard under the stairs, 4 Privet Drive, received by Mr. Albert Anderson.
When Albert read this, he discovered that he had actually triggered a task:
The Wizarding Way.
You have the potential to become a wizard, but you are not yet qualified. Now you have a precious opportunity to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and become a student.
Rewards: 10,000 experience, 2 skill points, and wizard blood +1.
Wizard blood?
Albert was stunned.
What the heck is this?
2 skill points were very tempting. It only took 1 point to become a student of Eton College, and Albert had only accumulated 3 skill points over the years, which he was reluctant to use.
However, what was even stranger was that this seemed to be the world of fiction.
The magical world of the Harry Potter novels?
Albert turned the envelope over and saw the Hogwarts crest, featuring the lion, eagle, badger, and serpent around the letter "H."
"Mom, will the zoo train owls to be postmen now?" Niya asked, staring curiously at the owl perched nearby.
"Niya, I don't think anyone would send a letter with an owl. At least normal people don't. Maybe it's just a prank," Daisy said, glancing at her husband. When she saw Herb's furrowed brows, she asked, "What's wrong, dear? Do you think it's time for me to go out?"
"Nothing, Albert, show me the letter," Herb whispered.
"Oh, here," Albert handed the envelope to his father.
"Honey!" Daisy was a little upset.
Herb didn't notice his wife's irritation as he quickly opened the envelope, took out the parchment, and glanced at it. He said, "Children, it seems our plans will need to be postponed."
"Dear Herb, what happened? What's in the letter?" Daisy asked, her tone sharpening as she felt something was amiss.
"Dad, what's in the letter?" Niya asked eagerly, but Albert, who had the letter, didn't react much.
"Let's go back inside, Daisy," Herb said, closing the car door with a thud. He ushered the family back into the house.
After the door closed, the owl that had delivered the letter still didn't fly away.
"Herb, you'd better give me a proper explanation," Daisy demanded, looking furious. She had been hoping to see her son in an Eton uniform.
"Dad, what's the letter about? Read it out loud for everyone. I want to know who can predict where I'll be," Albert said, his face calm. Of course, he already knew what the letter was about. After all, he'd experienced strange events before. If he hadn't been through the crossover and "panel" incidents, he might have been shocked by the letter.
But after those earlier shocks and realizing he was living in the world of a novel, it didn't feel too strange. Besides, he had read Harry Potter and even written about it once.
At that time, he'd researched the world of the book extensively.
"Alright, I'll read it," Herb said, looking at his son, who seemed completely unfazed. He began reading from the parchment:
Principal of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Albus Dumbledore (Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, First-Class Magician of Sir Merlin)
"Hogwarts... school!" Daisy gasped in surprise. She had already guessed what it was... an admission letter?
"Magic? Is there really magic in this world?" Niya asked excitedly. "I want to learn magic too! I want to go to a magic school!"
"Albert, let me see!" Niya reached to grab the letter from her brother, but Albert held it back.
"Niya, let Dad finish reading first," Albert said, signaling his father to continue and guiding his angry mother to sit down.
"Son, I will never let you go to Hogwarts..." Daisy started, clearly upset. She thought her husband might know something she didn't.
Herb coughed and continued reading:
Dear Mr. Anderson,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Enclosed you will find a list of required books and equipment. The term begins on September 1. Please send your reply by owl no later than July 21.
Yours sincerely, Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress (Female)
Herb finished reading and handed the letter to his son.
Albert skimmed it briefly before passing it to his curious sister. Niya ran to her mother with the letter.
After reading through the letter slowly, Daisy said each word carefully:
"I will never allow Albert to attend a school like this. No, someone must be playing a joke on us. We should call the police and have them catch those pranksters."
"Mom, didn't the owl tell us to reply to the letter?" Niya asked suddenly.
Daisy didn't respond, but gave her husband a hard, questioning stare.
Albert asked, "Dad, do you know something?"
"I don't know," Herb said, reaching a hand to his head as if trying to recall something. "When I was your age, my father—your grandfather—told me about receiving a letter from Hogwarts."
"He was disappointed when he didn't get one."
"I once asked him what Hogwarts was, and he just said it was a school."
"Later, when he was drunk, I asked him why he wanted me to go there."
"He just said he was a 'dumb cannon,' but I didn't understand what that meant." Herb's voice was low, his mind drifting back to a painful memory of his father's tears.
"I think now I understand what Hogwarts is. Father would have been so happy to know you've received a letter from there."
Albert knew what "dumb cannon" meant, but he had never thought he might be involved in something related to wizardry.
In fact, there was no similar skill in his skill bar; otherwise, he would have noticed it.
"Yes, I should write to him—no, I'll call him. He will definitely be happy!" Herb suddenly said, as if planning to contact his father right away.
"Heber Anderson!" Daisy cried, "Albert should go to Eton College. He'll accomplish things we can't even imagine, not attend a school we've never heard of! I won't allow it!"
"Mom, we still don't know if magic exists," Albert said calmly, reaching out to stop his mother from leaving. "Didn't the letter say the owl was waiting for a reply? Maybe we should send a letter back to Hogwarts. If they can't prove magic is real, then we'll know it's a hoax."
"Well, son, I agree with you. Let's make them prove it!" Daisy said, shaking her fist. "I'll call the police and have those criminals thrown in jail for years!"
This version uses elements from the Harry Potter series, such as the specific details of Hogwarts, the reference to the owl, and the inclusion of characters like Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall. It maintains the tone and structure of the original while correcting inconsistencies and adding references to the magical world.
