Chapter 101: Volume 1 Chapter 101: The Late Reinforcements
Scout, a Sarkaz from Kazdel, was a member of an organization called Tower of Babel. He considered himself a scout, and his codename was also "Scout." However, others called him the Master of Stealth, the Sharpshooter, or even the Future Hero of Kazdel.
He had a natural gift for sharp eyesight!
This time, his mission was to rescue Kal'tsit, a senior advisor who had left Babel several months ago.
Kal'tsit was a woman who had fought alongside Her Highness for years. Despite being of a different race, her importance to the Sarkaz people, both as a comrade and ally, was undeniable.
A year ago, Babel's second-in-command, Her Highness' brother, Theresis, betrayed them, leading a rebellion in Kazdel.
During the most critical moment, Dr. Kal'tsit didn't abandon them. She stayed until Babel evacuated Kazdel and relocated to Rim Billiton, only then going off to pursue what she had initially intended to do, though circumstances had delayed her.
At that time, Babel was still unstable and couldn't spare elite forces to assist her.
Dr. Kal'tsit refused Her Highness' help and left alone.
Only after a new commander suddenly rose to prominence, reclaiming several lost strategic points in just a few months, did the situation stabilize enough for them to embark from Kazdel towards Sargon, and finally to the Hotlands.
Though Scout didn't know why, the commander—who was originally just a researcher with the codename "Doctor"—seemed to know Kal'tsit's whereabouts. They marked several locations on the map where Kal'tsit might have gone.
The factory ruins below Scout were one of these locations. There were six others marked as well. If all seven of these places were destroyed, then Kal'tsit would likely be at the last marked location—an actual ancient civilization ruin!
The commander, known as "Doctor," had named this operation "Rescue Doctor Kal'tsit," though no one knew why they found it amusing.
Still, the Doctor seemed very confident in their naming skills.
Maybe it was a guy thing, Scout thought—no way he could understand what someone like the Doctor, a young girl, had in mind.
Due to the urgency of the mission, only a small group was dispatched. Yet despite their small numbers, Scout had no confidence in their chances of success.
To be honest, Scout even wondered if they might stand a chance of taking down a King of a royal court. After all, Lady Theresa had lent them her chief bodyguard!
A silent woman in a hooded cloak stood beside them, radiating danger from head to toe. Facing the other two members of the team, Scout had some confidence that while victory was uncertain, at least failure wasn't guaranteed. But against her? Scout knew that the moment she got close, he would already be a corpse.
Thankfully, she wasn't an enemy, but an ally. Having a strong companion by your side in a dangerous mission was the most reassuring thing.
Before coming, Scout couldn't quite understand why this mission required all four of them. But his sense of duty and respect for orders kept him from questioning it.
It wasn't until they entered the Hotlands and felt the harshness of its environment—encountering its deadly creatures multiple times and narrowly avoiding injury—that Scout understood why they needed such a formidable team.
He even suspected that the Doctor was slightly disappointed they couldn't send more people. The Doctor had prepped them extensively before the mission, with detailed guidance about which routes in the Hotlands were safest, the types of creatures they might encounter, which ones to avoid, and the weaknesses of those they couldn't evade.
It took them nearly a week to travel from the edge of the Hotlands to their current position. Only yesterday, during a deadly storm, one of their companions had used every ounce of their Originium Arts to create an underground shelter. Without that, they would all have died.
Sarkaz were used to living in harsh environments, but the Hotlands and its disasters were unlike anything most Sarkaz could endure. Perhaps only a Wendigo could survive such a storm.
Thankfully, the storm passed quickly, or Scout feared his companion might have died from exhaustion.
Finally arriving at one of the locations marked on the Doctor's map, they prepared for a fight but found an eerie silence instead.
The ruins, almost like a small town, were dead quiet.
Only the smoke rising in the distance and the craters around them indicated a recent battle, as if a natural disaster had swept through.
Mechanical guards lay scattered in pieces, their wreckage littering the area.
"Is Dr. Kal'tsit here?"
"Not sure."
"Let's finish the mission quickly and bring her back."
Of the four, Ascalon, the captain of Lady Theresa' bodyguards and a leader of Babel, was the most anxious. As Lady Theresa' chief guard, she believed she should be by Her Highness' side, not off on this mission.
While she didn't oppose rescuing Kal'tsit—in fact, she had some history with her—Ascalon still held firm in her stance.
However, she couldn't disobey Her Highness' orders.
Her only option was to complete the mission.
No matter if the enemies were the monsters of the Hotlands or remnants of ancient civilizations, she would defeat them all!
"Scout, have you found Dr. Kal'tsit?"
"I'm not sure if she's still here, but I can at least find signs of her departure."
Standing atop the high wall, Scout raised his sniper rifle and peered through its scope, surveying the entire factory.
Even while searching, Scout instinctively concealed himself—it was a habit.
Soon, he noticed something unusual.
Among the many abandoned buildings surrounding the factory, one housed a large figure, so massive that it blocked his entire view.
Along their journey, Scout had encountered some Hotlands natives, creatures resembling the ancient Sarkaz but not entirely the same.
Suddenly, he saw a familiar figure inside the building—it was Dr. Kal'tsit!
Scout nearly allowed himself to feel happy. But then he realized something terrible: Kal'tsit was injured and appeared unconscious.
And worse, the lizardman was naked!
Scout tried to convince himself that the lizardman was helping treat Kal'tsit's wounds.
But what kind of doctor strips someone to heal them?
Even the lizardmen of the Hotlands wore some kind of clothing, despite their primitive nature.
As Scout watched in horror, Kal'tsit's coat was thrown aside, and the lizardman leaned in closer to her.
Scout knew he couldn't watch any longer—Dr. Kal'tsit was being assaulted!
