Chapter 6: Way Out
The Weave was alive with energy, its threads pulsing with light as Lila, Dinah, and Kai moved closer to the Forgotten Timeline. The air grew colder, and the whispers of time became louder, more chaotic. Lila could feel the weight of the Weave pressing down on her, the threads of time tangling and fraying as they approached their destination.
"We're close," Kai said, his voice tense. He held the glowing compass in his hand, its needle spinning wildly. "The Forgotten Timeline is just ahead."
Dinah shivered, pulling her jacket tighter around her. "Why does it feel like we're walking into a storm?"
"Because we are," Kai replied grimly. "The Forgotten Timeline is unstable. It's a place where time has stopped completely, and the energy there is… unpredictable."
Lila frowned, her heart racing. "What do you mean, unpredictable?"
Before Kai could answer, the ground beneath them shifted. The threads of time around them began to twist and snap, sending jagged cracks through the air. Lila stumbled, grabbing onto Dinah for support. "What's happening?"
Kai's expression was grim. "The Fractures. They're getting worse the closer we get. We need to move quickly."
They pressed on, the air growing thicker and harder to breathe. The whispers of time became screams, echoing in Lila's mind. She could see the edge of the Forgotten Timeline now, a dark, jagged void where the threads of time ended abruptly. It was like staring into the mouth of a storm, and Lila felt a wave of dread wash over her.
"We're almost there," Kai said, his voice barely audible over the noise. "Just a little further."
But as they approached the edge, the ground beneath them gave way. The threads of time snapped, sending them tumbling into a swirling vortex of light and sound. Lila screamed, reaching out for Dinah and Kai, but the force of the Fracture pulled them apart.
When the chaos finally subsided, Lila found herself lying on the ground, gasping for air. Dinah and Kai were nearby, both looking shaken but unharmed. The Forgotten Timeline loomed ahead, but the path to it was now completely blocked by a wall of Fractures.
"We can't go any further," Kai said, his voice heavy with frustration. "The Fractures are too unstable. If we try to cross them, we'll be torn apart."
Dinah groaned, brushing dirt off her clothes. "So what do we do? Turn back?"
Kai nodded reluctantly. "For now. We need to regroup and figure out a better plan. Going in like this is suicide."
Lila looked at the Forgotten Timeline, her heart sinking. They were so close, but the Weave itself was pushing them back. "Alright," she said, her voice steady despite her fear. "Let's go back. But we're not giving up."
Lila nodded, her mind racing. She reached out to a nearby thread, her fingers brushing against its surface. The thread pulsed softly, and for a moment, she felt a connection, a way out. "This way!" she called, pulling the thread toward her. "Follow me!"
Dinah and Kai grabbed onto the thread, their hands glowing with energy as they channeled their strength into it. The thread grew brighter, its light cutting through the chaos of the Fractures. Lila could feel the Weave responding to her touch, the whispers of time guiding her as she led them away from the edge of the Forgotten Timeline.
The journey back was a blur of light and sound, the threads of time twisting and snapping around them. Lila's arms ached from holding onto the thread, but she didn't dare let go. She could feel the Fractures closing in behind them, their jagged edges reaching out like claws.
"Almost there!" Kai shouted, his voice barely audible over the noise. "Just a little further!"
With a final burst of energy, they reached the edge of the Weave, the threads of time stabilizing as they crossed back into the safety of the Eldermere Archives. Lila collapsed onto the ground, gasping for air as the whispers of time faded into a soft hum.
For a moment, no one spoke. The weight of what they had just experienced hung heavy in the air, each of them lost in their own thoughts. Finally, Dinah broke the silence. "Well… that could've done better."
Kai let out a short, humorless laugh. "Understatement of the century."
Lila sat up, her hands still trembling. "We were so close. But the Fractures… they were too strong."
Kai nodded, his expression grim. "We underestimated it. The Forgotten Timeline is more dangerous than I thought."
Dinah groaned, leaning back against the wall. "So what do we do now? Go back in there and hope for the best?"
"No," Lila said, her voice steady despite her fear. "We need a better plan. We can't just charge in there again without knowing what we're up against."
Kai looked at her, a flicker of respect in his eyes. "You're right. We need to regroup and figure out how to stabilize the threads. If we can do that, we might have a chance."
Dinah sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Alright. But can we at least take a break first? I think I've had enough near-death experiences for one day."
Lila smiled faintly, her heart still racing. "Agreed. Let's rest for now. But tomorrow, we start planning."
