The Clockmaker's Daughter

Chapter 8: Wasn't Supposed To Be

The hum of the Weave was a low thrum beneath Kai's skin, a constant reminder of the chaos they were about to plunge into. He stared at the newly crafted anchors, their soft glow reflecting in his troubled eyes. A wave of memories, sharp and unwelcome, crashed over him.

-----FLASHBACK------

The Weave hummed with a different energy then, a normal regulated , almost rhythmic pulse. Kai, younger, his face less etched with worry , worked alongside a team of researchers in a vast, shimmering underground chamber. Complex arrays of light danced across the empty space inside , displaying lot of different network parts of timelines. Among the researchers was Dr-Alaric, his eyes gleaming with an intensity that bordered on obsession.

"The stability readings are within acceptable parameters," Alaric announced, his voice sharp and confident. "We can proceed with the temporal adjustment."

Kai frowned, his fingers tracing a flickering anomaly on the interface. "Dr-Alaric, that fluctuation… it's outside the predicted range. It's too unstable."

"Nonsense," Alaric dismissed, waving a hand. "A minor deviation. We've accounted for far greater variances."

"But the Forgotten Timeline…" Kai began, his voice laced with concern.

"Leave it be, Kai," Alaric snapped, his gaze hardening. "That's beyond our purview. We're focused on stabilizing the primary threads."

Despite Kai's protests, Alaric initiated the adjustment. The Weave gave a strong shaking movement, and a ripple of chaotic energy erupted, tearing through the carefully calibrated network. The chamber plunged into disarray, alarms blaring. Kai watched in horror as a localized fracture bloomed, a dark, swirling vortex threatening to consume everything.

"What have you done?" Kai whispered, his voice thick with dread.

Alaric's face was pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and something else… something Kai couldn't quite decipher. "It… it wasn't supposed to happen like this."

The betrayal cut deep. Kai had trusted Alaric, believed in his dedication to the Weave. But Alaric's ambition, his reckless pursuit of knowledge perhaps he's chasing something else, he had unleashed something dangerous. Kai knew then he couldn't stay. He couldn't be a part of what Alaric was becoming. He fled, leaving behind the only life he'd known, becoming a wanderer, haunted by the consequences of Alaric's actions. He'd also left because Alaric had been looking into the forgotten timeline, something Kai had told him was too dangerous.

END FLASHBACK

Kai's hands tightened around an anchor, the metal digging into his skin. He hadn't told Lila or Dinah about his past with Alaric. He couldn't bear to see the disappointment in their eyes. He'd kept the reason he ran from his past a secret, only knowing that Alaric had been looking into the forgotten timeline.

"Kai?" Lila's voice broke through his reverie. She stood in the doorway, her expression concerned. "Are you alright? You seem… distant."

He forced a smile, pushing the memories back into the recesses of his mind. "Just thinking about the plan. We need to be prepared for anything."

Dinah entered the room, her eyes scanning the map of the Weave. "Alaric could be anywhere. We need to be ready for him."

Kai's jaw tightened. "He won't stop us. Not this time." He looked at the map, tracing the route they were about to take. "We follow these weaker threads, using the anchors to stabilize them. It's risky, but it's our only chance."

As they prepared to enter the Weave, Kai's heart pounded with a mixture of fear and determination. He knew he couldn't run from his past forever. He had to face Alaric, confront the consequences of his actions.

"Whatever happens in there," he said, his voice low and serious, "stay close. I won't let him hurt you."

Lila met his gaze, her eyes filled with trust. "We won't let him hurt you either, Kai. We're in this together."

As they stepped into the shimmering portal, Kai knew that this journey was more than just about saving the Weave. It was about facing his own demons, about confronting the man who had betrayed him. And about preventing Alaric from reaching the Forgotten Timeline, a place that Kai knew held dangers beyond their comprehension. he'd met him in the weave when traveling with Dinah and Lila but he didn't recognize him anymore, what could be his reasons for going this far, he'd have to ask him that himself when they meet again.
