chapter 244 - The Werewolf-Vampire Hybrid
Adele now understood the pain of being unable to split herself into multiple copies. She had to respond to each of the girls who loved her, and whom she loved in return, in her own way. In the end, she decided to accept Hermione’s invitation first, followed by Celeste and Sharon. Dorothy was fourth in line, and Edith last. This wasn’t a slight against Edith; Adele’s feelings for her were a complex mix of gratitude and sympathy, not pure romantic love.
The only one seemingly left out was Tsukimi Shiro.
Their relationship was… complicated, a tentative truce between former enemies. Tsukimi Shiro’s infatuation with Adele, however, was undeniable. She stood among Kaiser’s entourage, nursing a cocktail, a lonely figure watching Adele shine on the dance floor, her steps gradually transforming from awkward to graceful, her confidence growing with each turn. A bittersweet smile touched Tsukimi Shiro’s lips, a smile that didn’t go unnoticed by Amaterasu Kuro, a shadow passing over the older twin’s face.
Like Tsukimi Shiro, who considered her sister’s feelings, Amaterasu Kuro was also starting to reflect on her own actions, on the importance of her pride. The driving force behind her and her sister’s reckless behavior was their perceived “slight,” their need to reclaim their “property,” to retaliate against Adele’s defiance.
To them, a girl who had always been bullied, daring to resist, was an act of defiance, a challenge to their authority. They had been so accustomed to their dominance, to treating Adele as a plaything, that they couldn’t comprehend her newfound strength, her refusal to be controlled.
Amaterasu Kuro, blinded by her arrogance, still clung to the belief that Adele was hers to command. She hadn’t learned the wisdom of adapting to change. And the consequences of her actions had been disastrous, driving a wedge between her and her sister. While Amaterasu Kuro’s feelings for Adele were akin to a child’s possessiveness over a toy, her bond with Tsukimi Shiro was far deeper. Toys could be replaced, but a sister… was irreplaceable.
Seeing Tsukimi Shiro’s growing affection for Adele, the fire of Amaterasu Kuro’s anger slowly began to extinguish, replaced by a strange, unfamiliar emotion. Though she still felt a twinge of resentment towards Adele, it was limited to verbal jabs. She stood alone, no dance partner, even separated from Tsukimi Shiro. The once inseparable twins were now adrift, their connection frayed.
Beside her, Wen Xi, dressed seductively, boldly sat on Kaiser’s lap, her arms around Kaiser’s neck. It was a move that would make most blush, but Kaiser remained impassive, her gaze fixed on the dance floor, as if searching for someone, or perhaps for nothing at all. Adele’s image flickered in her eyes, a single drop of water disturbing the still surface of a lake, sending out ripples.
Wen Xi, oblivious to Kaiser’s distraction, whined, “Kaiser, you can’t leave me without a dance partner~”
Amaterasu Kuro, overhearing this, felt a surge of irritation. As if she had a dance partner!
“I don’t want to dance,” Kaiser said firmly, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Wen Xi, hearing this, knew there was no chance of winning Kaiser’s favor.
But Kaiser, perhaps feeling a twinge of guilt, offered a small concession. She called out to a girl huddled in the shadows, her figure obscured by a baseball cap,
“Little Wolf, come dance with Wen Xi.”
The girl, startled, stood up, her finger pointing at herself in disbelief. “…Me? Kaiser, I don’t know how…”
Her face was partially hidden by the shadow of her cap, but her features seemed delicate. Only her eyes, even in the shadows, shone with a chilling blue light, intense, brooding, and lonely, like a wolf separated from its pack.
Noticing the stares, the girl, called “Little Wolf,” quickly lowered her head, pulling her cap lower, her lips pressed together in a nervous grimace.
Kaiser didn’t repeat her request, nor did she threaten the girl. She simply looked at her, then at Wen Xi, who was still draped over her, her hands restless. The message was clear: I found you someone, now leave me alone.
To Kaiser’s surprise, Wen Xi’s expression turned cold, her eyes filled with a wounded, almost betrayed look. It was a side of Wen Xi that Kaiser had never seen before. But Kaiser, emotionally stunted, didn’t offer comfort. She didn’t understand Wen Xi’s sudden shift in mood. After all, Kaiser had never understood the nuances of human emotions, a fact evident in her relentless and futile pursuit of Dorothy. If it weren’t for her powerful lineage and exceptional talent, she wouldn’t have survived to adulthood in the rigid hierarchy of the vampire world.
But despite her emotional shortcomings, Kaiser possessed an undeniable charm that drew others to her. Many vampire girls had harbored secret, and not-so-secret, crushes on Kaiser. Wen Xi, however, was the most persistent, and the strongest among them.
As for Little Wolf, her real name was “Wofoo.”
The reason they called her “Little Wolf” was because…
Kaiser’s eye twitched, a sudden sense of foreboding washing over her.
Because Wen Xi, with a seductive sway of her hips, got off Kaiser’s lap and walked towards Wofoo, her expression still cold.
When she reached Wofoo, the girl looked up with a hesitant smile, hoping for… acceptance.
Instead, Wen Xi slapped her across the face, the force of the blow sending Wofoo’s head snapping to the side, a bright red mark blooming on her cheek. Her baseball cap fell to the ground, revealing long, ash-gray hair and a pair of matching, pointed wolf ears.
“You think you’re worthy of dancing with me, you filthy werewolf!?” Wen Xi spat, her words like daggers piercing Wofoo’s heart.
Wofoo’s expression froze, her eyes trembling. The stinging pain on her cheek was secondary, the humiliation almost irrelevant. What truly hurt was the collective gaze of the onlookers, their eyes filled with disdain and disgust, branding her as an outcast.
She covered her ears, her body trembling, not with anger, but with fear.
“Don’t… don’t look at me…!”
“Please…”
The commotion drew the attention of everyone in the hall, even Adele, who stopped mid-dance, her eyes drawn to the scene unfolding before her. She saw a flash of ash-gray as a figure fled the hall, desperate to escape the judging eyes. But Adele’s own eyes lit up, her attention captured by something far more interesting.
Fluffy ears! she thought, her heart pounding with excitement. There are beast-eared girls among vampires!? This trip to Twilight City was already worth it!
Sharon, who was now Adele’s dance partner, sensing the girl’s distraction, explained softly, “That girl… she’s probably a werewolf-vampire hybrid.”
“I wonder how Adele did in her vampire history elective. There should be a section about the war when the werewolves tried to invade Twilight City.”
Adele’s eyes darted around. “I vaguely remember something like that, anyway, the werewolves were completely defeated… right?”
“That’s right,” Sharon confirmed. “They initially gained the upper hand through a sneak attack, but as the situation changed, and the vampires revealed their true strength, the werewolves were gradually pushed back, and eventually defeated.”
“In the end, they had to abandon their armor and even their own people to escape with their lives.”
“It was also after that war that a group of werewolves were sentenced to penal servitude in Twilight City.”
Adele’s eyes widened slightly, she understood how these werewolf-vampire hybrids came to be. Vampires really weren’t picky…
They even did it with werewolves.
Was there any species in this world that they wouldn’t try to date?
But unlike the image of werewolves as upright walking “beasts,” this werewolf-vampire hybrid was actually quite beautiful, except for her wolf ears and the tail she somehow managed to conceal, she was almost indistinguishable from a vampire.
A true “beast-eared girl”!
But perhaps this appearance was precisely what they hated the most, their deepest insecurity.
“They’re very pitiful, aren’t they?” Adele said, empathizing with the girl’s plight, having experienced discrimination as a Sequence Five herself.
Sharon nodded with a bitter smile.
“It’s not an exaggeration to say that they’re the lowest of the low in Twilight City.”
Even Sequence Five vampires could look down on them.
Who would show ✧ NоvеIight ✧ (Original source) mercy to the descendants of their enemies?
They could only blame their parents for selfishly bringing them into this world.
“Pitiful, such a cute beast-eared girl…”
“You don’t cherish them, I will…” Adele muttered.
The ball was still going on, and they couldn’t just stay on the dance floor like this, occupying space.
“Shall we continue, Adele?” Sharon asked gently, taking Adele’s soft hand.
Adele nodded and leaned closer to Sharon, resuming their intimate dance.
At the same time, Kaiser, who had witnessed everything, suddenly turned to Amaterasu Kuro and asked,
“…Did I do something wrong?”
Amaterasu Kuro was speechless.
Just how low was this girl’s EQ!?
It was hard to say whether she and her sister’s decision to switch from Dorothy’s camp to Kaiser’s was right or wrong.
Amaterasu Kuro raised her glass and took a sip of the sweet and sour cocktail, then looked at Kaiser and said,
“Kaiser, you know Wen Xi likes you, right?”
“…Yeah, she’s clingy.”
More clingy than any other girl.
Although there were many people who liked Kaiser since childhood, Kaiser wouldn’t even give them a second glance, and almost none of them could persist in a one-sided love that was destined to be unrequited.
Wen Xi was the only exception.
“Knowing that, you still let her dance with someone else!”
Amaterasu Kuro said bluntly.
This action could only be described as self-destructive.
Wen Xi, being pushed to someone else by the person she liked, felt humiliated and heartbroken, which eventually led to her taking her anger out on Wofoo.
Causing Wofoo to suffer an undeserved disaster.
“But I don’t want to dance,” Kaiser said matter-of-factly, her expression and answer showing no hesitation.
“Wofoo looked envious of the people on the dance floor, she wanted to dance.”
“So I let Wofoo and Wen Xi dance, is there a problem with that?”
In a sense, Kaiser’s “straight girl” level was unparalleled.
Amaterasu Kuro looked at Kaiser silently for a long time, and after a while, she could only say,
“I’m no match for you.”
“Anyway, I advise you to comfort Wen Xi.”
“What about Wofoo?” Kaiser asked.
At this time, she was still impartial.
Wen Xi’s years of devotion and pursuit were all for naught.
Because this proved that in Kaiser’s eyes, Wen Xi and Wofoo had the same status.
After all, both Wen Xi and Wofoo were members of her small group.
It was just that Wen Xi was more popular and had a higher status.
As for Wofoo, she was often bullied and ordered around.
Although she was strong, otherwise, she wouldn’t have been allowed to participate in the Blood Trial as a hybrid, it didn’t change the fact that her bloodline was considered dirty.
Hybrids were also divided into different levels, and werewolf hybrids were undoubtedly the lowest.
Kaiser didn’t have a girl she liked.
But if there was someone she cared about… now there was one.
It was the girl Dorothy liked, Adele.
She was curious, what kind of magic did that girl have that could make Dorothy fall for her?
Amaterasu Kuro looked at Kaiser intently after hearing her question.
The answer was too obvious.
It made Amaterasu Kuro wonder if Kaiser was “fishing.”
But seeing Kaiser’s straightforward personality, she probably didn’t have that many tricks up her sleeve.
So Amaterasu Kuro simply answered,
“She’s a werewolf hybrid.”
As a noble Sequence One, you’re ignoring your companion to comfort a werewolf hybrid?
Kaiser, are you okay!?
