Chapter 240: Is Anyone There?
Wei Xuan's tone was slightly anxious.
After listening, Li Muyang fell into a brief silence before asking, "Does Brother Wei have any plan?"
Wei Xuan immediately fell silent.
After a long while, he slowly began, "I had originally planned to rest and recuperate overnight, then head to Sanhe City before dawn. If I couldn't rescue Chu Qingxue, I was prepared not to live on."
"But since Nameless friend has come, there might be a turn of events..."
As he spoke, Wei Xuan took out an emerald jade pendant and handed it to Li Muyang.
"This is the Green Abyss Jade Disc left by my master before he left, the token of the sect leader of the Mysterious Sword Sect."
"You take the Jade Disc into the city, find Dan Xiaolian, the first-rank Magician from The Heavenly Monitors."
"Inside Sanhe City now, The Heavenly Monitors' Demon Suppression Magus stand by indifferently, and as long as it's not evil spirits causing trouble, they would not lift a finger even if the demon followers of the Blood Devil Path were at the city walls."
"But the Green Abyss Jade Disc represents the sect leader of the Mysterious Sword Sect, with it you can go seek out Dan Xiaolian, tell her that if she is willing to help, my Mysterious Sword Sect will allow her to enter Bai Zhang Abyss for three days."
"This reward should be enough to persuade her to make an exception and help."
As Wei Xuan explained, the system interface in Li Muyang's field of vision also changed.
[Prerequisite Mission: Go to the heart of Sanhe, find Mysterious Sword Sect disciple Wei Xuan—Completed]
[New Mission: Bring the Taotie Jade Disc into Sanhe City, convince Dan Xiaolian to help]
With the update of the system's mission list, Li Muyang took the Jade Disc and said, "Alright! Leave it to me."
But he was still somewhat puzzled.
Wei Xuan then explained, "Bai Zhang Abyss is a secret realm opened by my master; staying there for three days would be extremely beneficial for a Demon Suppression Magus, at the very least it would extend their life by three years."
"After all, the Demon Suppression Magus of The Heavenly Monitors are short-lived..."
The explanation made it clear to Li Muyang.
"Alright, I'll make the trip to the city now."
Li Muyang pocketed the Green Abyss Jade Disc and turned to leave.
As he visited the Tian Yuan Dynasty more frequently, Li Muyang discovered that its social structure was entirely different from what he had imagined.
He initially thought The Heavenly Monitors was an agency under the imperial government since from his previous experiences, it was an important and notorious part of the government.
But this time, he found it bizarre that The Heavenly Monitors could ignore the rebels causing chaos in the city?
This special agency, intended solely to deal with evil spirits and calamities, presented an odd existence, seemingly only concerning themselves with supernatural disturbances.
With the Blood Devil Path rebels causing trouble right under their noses, asking a Demon Suppression Magus from The Heavenly Monitors to act required giving them a benefit... tsk...
Li Muyang pocketed the Green Abyss Jade Disc and leaped through the pitch-dark forest.
Following the path he had come by, he continued to jump while carefully avoiding the soldiers in the forest.
These soldiers were clearly from the Chaos Army of the Blood Devil Path, not imperial troops, as their attire was different from that of the government soldiers.
After running a great distance through the forest, Li Muyang once again emerged from the mountain range into the plains ahead.
Outside the dark silhouette of the large city, tents crowded under the moonlight like mushrooms.
The Chaos Army of the Blood Devil Path had brazenly set up their camp just outside the walls of Sanhe City.
The city gates of Sanhe City were firmly shut, and on the dark city walls, there were only a few patrolling figures. The flags on the walls were the same as those in the military camps outside.
It was clear that after Commandery Princess Wei Xuan and the Glass Immortal Maiden Chu Qingxue had been ambushed, the city governor had openly switched sides without disguise.
However, Li Muyang was uninterested in such dynastic changes.
He swiftly leaped through the darkness, choosing a shadowy part of the city wall to climb.
Although the joints in the body of a zombie were stiff, making climbing very difficult, his immense strength eventually allowed Li Muyang to laboriously scale the wall.
The city walls were covered in dried blood and scorched by the marks of blades and fire.
In the period prior, this stretch of the wall must have been the battlefield where the rebels and the imperial soldiers slaughtered each other, countless precious lives lost upon its stones.
But now, with the treacherous turn of the governor of Sanhe, the Chaos Army had taken the city without spilling a drop of blood.
The guards upon the walls were few and far between, after all there were plenty of patrolling soldiers outside the city.
The lax defense made it easier for Li Muyang.
It was only after Li Muyang secretly descended from the walls that he discovered the city of Sanhe, under cover of night, was unusually lively.
Every street was adorned with lanterns and streamers, the clamor and hullabaloo resounded to the heavens, as if all the citizens of Sanhe hadn't slept, engaged in an all-night frenzy.
Many of the Demon Path's soldiers paraded some of the imperial officials through the city streets; amidst the cheering and cursing of the citizens, rotten eggs and vegetable leaves were thrown, continuously striking the officials in the prison carts.
Li Muyang, hidden amongst the crowd, saw that the one being paraded at the very front was a corpulent prince, richly clad in a python robe.
But this prince, who once held high status, was now shivering on the prison cart, his body and face covered in filth and rotten eggs.
The city's populace was shouting loudly.
"Flay him! Flay him!"
"This brutal and unkind beast! Flay him!"
Clearly, the prince had a terrible reputation in the city; seeing him in distress, the entire city's population was incited, wishing they could tear him to pieces themselves.
Li Muyang, standing among the crowd, watched from a distance. While everyone was busy denouncing the corrupt officials, he stole a hooded cloak in a deserted corner to cover himself.
Despite the deep night and the dim candlelight in the city, should anyone come close, they would still detect the unsettling aspect of his zombie body.
Wrapped in his cloak, Li Muyang walked through the city, and after ascertaining the direction to the Imperial Astronomical Office, he headed straight for its gates.
Along the way, he encountered several parties transporting prisoners.
The Demon Path's entry into the city seemed intent on executing that night all the wealthy but heartless government dogs, as well as the royal nobles who had once exploited the common folk.
Among those in the prisoner procession were two princes, along with their heirs and the commandery princesses, each in a pitiful state, some so frightened they had already been reduced to tears and incessant begging for mercy.
Yet, the more piteous the cries of these heirs and princesses, the more incensed the surrounding citizens became.
Varieties of angry shouts and denunciations fused into a raucous sea of sound in the city.
In such a chaotic situation, Li Muyang traversed the tumultuous city and finally arrived outside the wide-open gates of the Imperial Astronomical Office.
The office under the cover of night was as silent as death, an anomaly in this noisy and bustling city.
Li Muyang frowned slightly, saved his game, and then walked inside.
"Anybody here?"
After stepping into the office, he looked around for any sign of the Demon Suppression Magus but saw none.
The interior of the Imperial Astronomical Office was dead silent.
Li Muyang took a few more steps, but his body suddenly froze.
A streak of cold light passed silently, and Li Muyang saw his own head falling, rapidly separating from his body.
[You have died, game over]
The familiar game over screen popped up, and Li Muyang in the private room of the tavern opened his eyes.
He scratched his head.
"...Dead already?"
Though he knew there would be danger inside the office, the directness of his death was something Li Muyang hadn't anticipated.
He hadn't even seen clearly how he died.
