Chapter 15: A Loud Mind
Chapter Fifteen: A Loud Mind
Isabelle was in her bedroom, putting the packed money into her own safe that Reign didn't know about.
She knelt beside the cabinet, locking the final stack of bills inside, thinking about how every penny would go to the twins. For their future and their safety.
Then she heard yelling coming from downstairs and immediately paused.
There was a man's voice downstairs. He sounded loud, angry. Then Reign's voice, stricter than usual.
Isabelle stood up and rushed out of the room.
When she reached the hallway that overlooked the stairs, she paused again. A stranger was standing at the bottom, holding the twins in his arms.
"What the hell are you doing in my house?" Reign barked.
The man looked calm, like Reign's expression amused him.
Then his eyes found Isabelle. His facial expressions changed.
He walked up the stairs slowly, still holding the twins like they weighed nothing. He stopped in front of her and smiled. His hair was dyed an icy blue, and his eyes were so much like Reign's, staring into hers with something he knew about.
"You look just like the photos," he said softly. "But better."
"Who are you?" Isabelle asked, confused, taking a step back.
The man bowed slightly with a grin. "Simon. Reign's little brother."
Isabelle blinked. 'Little brother?'
"I wasn't invited to the wedding," Simon added, smirking as he handed her the twins. "No hard feelings."
She took them quickly, holding them protectively. They didn't cry or fuss. Instead, they stared at Simon like they knew him.
Simon looked at Aron, then at Aurora. "Their thoughts are too loud."
Isabelle stiffened. Her heart skipped a beat.
Simon popped a lollipop into his mouth and tapped the side of his head with two fingers. Then he glanced at her, one eyebrow raised, and gave her the smallest nod.
She stared at him.
'He knows. He knows I can hear them.'
Before she could speak, Reign came up behind Simon and grabbed his shoulder.
"Get out."
Simon smiled. "What? I can't say hi to the kids?"
"You're not welcome here," Reign snapped.
Simon glanced back at Isabelle. "He's always been the friendly one."
"Leave," Reign said again. His voice tone was demanding and Isabelle thought he sounded dangerous.
Simon shrugged, then stepped away—but not before giving Aurora a little wave and whispering, "See you around, princess."
Then, with no warning, Reign punched him hard…
Simon stumbled but laughed as he steadied himself. "Touchy, aren't we?"
"Out!" Reign roared.
Simon winked at Isabelle, lollipop still in place. "You married a storm, didn't you?"
And then he walked down the stairs like nothing had happened.
Isabelle was just standing there.
Reign looked up. His eyes locked with hers. He realised she had seen the whole thing.
He didn't say a word...
He turned and walked into his study, slamming the door shut behind him.
Isabelle stared at the closed door, holding the twins tighter.
'Who was that really? What did he mean about the thoughts being too loud? How did he know?'
She walked back into her room and placed the twins gently into their crib.
Aurora turned slightly and mumbled, 'The note… Aron's pocket…'
Isabelle stopped again…'what the hell is going on here…? Can Aurora understand me?' She asked herself while looking at the baby.
But there was no answer from her or Aron.
"I'm going crazy…"
She waited until both babies were fully asleep. Then she reached into Aron's tiny pocket.
A piece of folded paper was inside.
"What in the world…?" She opened it slowly.
It read:
"I can help you find Charlotte's killer."
And beneath it, there was a phone number…
"Call me."
