The Heiress’s Contract Marriage With Her Enemy

Chapter 18: An Evil Doctor

Chapter Eighteen: An Evil Doctor

Everything in the house was quiet except for soft giggles.

Isabelle was sitting at the edge of her bed, the morning sun just started pouring in through the windows.

She had just gotten up when she heard the twins again not with her ears, but inside her head.

'That tickles! Stop it!' Aurora laughed.

'You started it!' Aron replied, his thoughts sounded bright and playful.

Her heart picked up speed. She looked around the room. No one was there. Yet she could still hear them as if they were sitting right next to her.

She rushed to the nursery, her breath caught in her chest. The twins were on the bed, rolling and laughing, pointing at each other with their tiny fingers.

'How is this happening?' she still couldn't believe it and understand it.

She backed away slowly and returned to her room, grabbing her phone. Her fingers flew over the screen.

She searched everything she could think of.

Can a mother hear her baby's thoughts?

Psychic connection between mother and child?

Signs of telepathy between siblings?

Nothing made sense…Every result said the same thing—no.

It was impossible, delusional, hormonal and grief.

None of it explained why she could hear full thoughts from two toddlers who barely even spoke out loud.

A knock at the door made her jump. The doors opened, and a tall man in a white coat stepped in.

"Good morning, Mrs. Kraus," he said, clipboard in hand. "I'm Dr. Vann. Here to check on the twins."

Isabelle frowned. "I didn't ask for a doctor."

"Mr. Kraus arranged the visit. Just routine," he smiled, but something about it felt cold.

She followed him into the nursery. The twins' laughter faded the second he walked in.

Aron's head turned sharply toward him. 'It's him. The bad one.'

'Don't let him touch us,' Aurora's thought was almost a scream.

And then they began crying more louder and let out terrified sobs. Reaching toward Isabelle like she was their last hope.

"No," she said quickly. "Get out."

Dr. Vann blinked. "Excuse me?"

"I said leave," she snapped. "They don't want you near them."

"I assure you, it's completely safe—"

"I don't trust you!" she snapped, her eyes widened. "Get out now before I call security myself."

He didn't argue after that. He mumbled something and backed away, walking out the door with an insulted look.

Seconds later, Reign stormed in. His suit jacket was still on, but his tie was half loose.

"What the hell is going on?" he asked.

Isabelle held Aurora close, her voice shaking. "I told him to leave."

Reign's face tightened. "That was a certified doctor. He was here to help the twins."

"I don't care. I don't trust him."

"You don't trust anyone," Reign growled. "Not me, not the doctor, not the people who actually try to help."

"Because nobody's helping," Isabelle fired back. "You bring strangers into our house without asking me. They screamed when he came in. They felt it."

"They're toddlers. They scream at shadows."

"No," she whispered. "You wouldn't understand."

Reign walked forward. "You're being dramatic."

"I'm being their family," she snapped. "Something you'll never understand."

Before he could speak again, two of his security men entered the room. He turned to them.

"Take her to my study. Now."

"What?" Isabelle stood up fast, clutching Aurora to her chest.

Reign's eyes were cold. "You're clearly not in the right state to make decisions."

"No! Don't you dare—"

But it was too late. The men gently, but firmly, took her arms. She struggled, shouted, cursed. Her screams repeated and were heard through the hall, but Reign didn't flinch.

"Don't take me from them! Don't you touch the babies!" she cried as they dragged her out.

She kicked, twisted, trying to break free. But the guards were trained, and her voice was nothing but a ghost in their ears.

They locked her in his study…

The windows high... She couldn't hear the twins anymore. She sat on the floor, tears streaking her face.

"I hate him," she whispered. "I hate him with every part of me."

She hugged her knees and cried harder than she had in weeks. Her body shook. Her heart felt hurting. Her chest burned with something she couldn't understand.

Isabelle wasn't scared…She was angry.

And the worst part, she was alone…

The door finally opened.

She didn't look up, already knowing who it was exactly.

"I said I don't want to see you," she said quietly.

Reign walked in, closing the door behind him. He said nothing at first.

"You're a monster," Isabelle whispered. "You locked me up like I was some kind of danger."

"I didn't know what else to do," Reign replied calmly.

She looked up, her eyes looked red and tired. "Then maybe you shouldn't do anything at all."

He stared at her, with no voice again. The tension in his shoulders, the tightness in his jaw—he didn't seem angry. Just… done.

"I give up," he said after a long moment.

"What?"

"I'm tired of fighting you."

Isabelle blinked.

"I don't want to argue anymore. I'm exhausted, Isabelle. From you. From all of it."

She stood up slowly, her breath sounded unsteady. "Then stop controlling everything."

"I'm trying to keep the twins safe."

"You don't even care about them."

Reign looked at her, and something flashed in his eyes. "You don't know what I care about."

"I know what you don't. You don't defend me. You don't support me. You let your parents call me a gold digger, and now you treat me like some crazy woman locked in a tower."

"I didn't mean for that to happen."

"But it did happen!" she screamed. "You made it happen!"

He looked away. The silence between them grew more uncomfortable. Then he spoke in a hushed voice.

"I've lost too many people already."

Isabelle stepped back. "Then stop treating me like I'm your enemy."

Reign didn't answer. He turned to leave.

"Do you want me to leave too?" she asked.

He paused at the door. But I don't know how to keep you."

The door closed behind him.

And Isabelle stood alone in the study, feeling her heart break in slow, painful ways

But then she heard the twins scream as loud as ever before.

"Fuck him! I'm leaving!"

Isabelle opened the window, started calculating the fall, "it shouldn't break all my bones. Aurora, Aron-I'm coming!"

*Thud*
