Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Shadows Rising
After leaving the stone courtyard, Vale quickened his pace. A newfound urgency burned within him, not merely wandering in search of clues, but sensing a darkness rapidly closing in.Walking along the weathered stone path, each step felt as heavy as lead. From the treetops in the distance came a rapid howl, as if an alarm had been sounded, warning him that danger was near.
Just as he gripped his sword tightly and scanned the surroundings, a sudden, resounding thud shattered the forest's silence. A vague black shape emerged from the thick fog and lunged toward him.Vale's heart tightened as he drew his sword, swiftly dodging the form that advanced with a piercing whistle. He felt the oppressive force of that shadow as if it were tangible, while the air carried a biting chill."Who goes there?" he demanded in a low voice, his tone clear and resolute in the fog.
The shadow, seemingly intimidated by his presence, hesitated and then slowly retreated into the mist, flickering faintly. But Vale knew this was only the beginning. His pulse raced as he refocused his gaze ahead, there, hidden behind the silhouettes of trees, a dim figure observed his every move. The rustle of leaves and the murmur of the wind foretold an impending storm. Vale felt a surge of determination; he understood that only by swiftly uncovering more clues about the lost fragments could he hope to fend off this sudden dark force. He adjusted his breathing and clutched the ancient key tightly, as though it could grant him endless strength and guidance."I can't linger; this darkness leaves no room for hesitation," Vale murmured, his voice laced with urgency and resolve.
At that moment, rapid whooshing sounds emerged from deep within the woods, accompanied by creaking branches, signs that more unknown threats were drawing near.Surveying his surroundings quickly, Vale decided to avoid the open area and turned toward a denser forest path. Although the shadows there were deeper, they offered better concealment. In his heart, he silently vowed that no matter how treacherous the road ahead, he must press on, not just to uncover the lost fragments of light, but to protect everything he holds dear.
As his pace quickened, Vale vanished into the dark forest, while the persistent wind and howling continued to echo in his ears, whispering that destiny was already waiting in the shadows for his challenge.
