The Hybrid King's Queen

Chapter 9: More or less

"How exactly can we do that?", Hitch asked. Avalyn seemed to be searching her thoughts. "I think I can make a tea that will reverse the effects of the powder", Avalyn nodded. "Powder?", Alexander asked. "The witch blew a powder in his face. That is why his thirst takes over", she explained.

"Wait, so you are saying that I am being controlled by a witch?", Gavin asked, making it known that he was awake. "More or less", Avalyn answered. Alexander immediately pulled Avalyn behind him to stand between her and Gavin.

Ross stepped forward, following his Alpha's orders. "Look, until we reverse the effects of the powder, we will need to keep you in the holding cell", Alexander explained. "I understand", Gavin said, hanging his head.

Alexander nodded at Ross to take Gavin away. "Do you have an apothecary?", Avalyn asked, looking up at Alexander. "We have one in town, yes", he answered. "I can take you there now", he added.

"Hitch, why don't you head back to the packhouse. Go ahead and let everyone know that we got the guy. And let them begin to settle. Alexander and I can get the herbs I need and break the spell", Avalyn explained.

Hitch nodded in agreement. "I can do that", he said. Alexander led the way back to the vehicle. A second SUV pulled up behind the one we were in. Ross put Gavin in the back seat and started to get in the passenger seat.

"I can just ride back with them. Save time", Hitch suggested. "Ross, hold up!", Alexander called out. Ross stopped and looked over in our direction. "Take Hitch back to the packhouse", Alexander instructed. "Yes Alpha", Ross bowed. He held the passenger door open for Hitch to climb in.

"Grant, be safe", Hitch said, as he walked away. "I will", she assured him, before following Alexander to the first vehicle. Alexander opened the passenger door for Avalyn, catching her by surprise.

"Do you know which herbs you need?", Alexander asked, as he got into the driver's seat. "I think so", Avalyn answered. "You think so?", he chuckled, looking at her with a smirk. "I have a lot of stupid stuff stored in this head. You have to bear with me while I search for the useful shit", she smiled.

Alexander roared with laughter, as he drove down the road. "Are you always this witty?", he asked. "For me it's not wit, it's reality", she chuckled. "Just trust me, once I am there and looking at them, I will know exactly what I am looking for", she assured him.

"Why did you choose the BAU?", he asked, curious about her journey. She seemed so damn smart. So, why the government? Avalyn laughed nervously. "The BAU chose me", she said. Alexander gave her a curious expression.

Avalyn sighed and looked out the window. "I graduated when I was fifteen years old. Because of my age, I was unable to get a job", she began to explain. "I was stuck in the foster house. When I graduated but couldn't get a job, or move out, my foster parents saw it fit to make every task in the house mine", she continued. The memories striking her like whips.

"All I wanted was to be free of that place. So, I decided the only reasonable thing I could do was hack into the social security database and change my records to reflect that I was eighteen years old", she smirked.

"Did it work?", Alexander asked, fully invested in her story. "Yes and no", she chuckled. "Hitch showed up at my front door step the very next day. He talked with me, told me how much trouble I was in. I remember breaking down and telling him everything", she uttered, floating off into her memories.

"And I mean everything. I guess he felt pity for me because he refused to leave that house without me", she said, finally looking over at Alexander. Alexander's eyes were soft as he took in the details. "He got ahold of child services and petitioned for me to be able to stay with him. He helped me get emancipated and helped me continue my education. After a year of college, I was able to join the BAU", she explained.

"And what led to the treaty?", he inquired. "Funny actually", she giggled. "I dreamed about it. I had a dream one night of a beautiful white wolf telling me to create it. That it would be hard and require a lot of work. But it needed to be done, immediately. Of course, I was still staying at Hitch's house, so when I woke up the next morning, I told him about it. He was intrigued and skeptical but agreed to help me", she answered.

"Is that when you told him about what you are?", Alexander asked softly. Avalyn took a deep breath. "No. I told him after he moved me into his house. He was surprised for sure, but he knew I would NEVER hurt him. Ever", she answered.

Hitch and Avalyn's relationship makes more sense to Alexander now. He has pretty much raised her and taught her how to be self-sufficient. He owes that man for caring for his mate, and he knows it.

"What about your husband? How did that happen?", he asked. Avalyn frowned deeply. "Ex-husband", she hissed, instantly angry. "Easy there, malenkiy' volk (little one). I was not trying to upset you or bring up a touchy subject. I was only trying to get to know you", Alexander said softly.

"I think I have shared enough today", Avalyn uttered, looking back out the window. "I apologize, Avalyn. Please don't be angry with me", Alexander whispered gently. Avalyn took a deep breath and sighed. She's not even angry at him. She is mad at herself for feeling so defensive when her ex is mentioned as her current.

"What did you do in the Appalachia?", Avalyn asked, changing the subject. "Six years ago?", he asked confused. "Yeah. That's where your father said you were, while him and I worked on the treaty", Avalyn explained.

"I mean it was. I just totally forgot about that", he chuckled with a shrug. "I was there taking care of a rouge problem. That was back when feral rouges were such a huge problem for us", he answered her question.

Avalyn nodded, "That right. I almost forgot about that", she uttered, shaking her head, as she looked out at the growing community. "In my defense, I have been alive for almost a century, six years is barely blimp on the spectrum", he joked. "I don't have a defense" Avalyn shrugged with a light laugh. Alexander shook his head and smiled playfully as he pulled into the parking spot.

"Here we are", he said, looking up at one of the original buildings on this land. While Alexander did have new buildings built, he still left the original ones behind for aesthetics.

"This is so cute", Avalyn uttered, as she jumped out of the passenger seat. She examined the forest green house with cream-colored shutters. Thyme and Oregano grew in vines up the side of the house, shadowing it with leaves.

"Are you ready?", Alexander asked. A soft smile crossed Avalyn's lips, as a sense of ease washed over her. "I am", she answered gently. Alexander took her by the hand and led her into the cute house, making her mind go numb with excitement.
