The Irregular at Magic High School: Everyone Loves My Brother?!

Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Tangled Duties and Unseen Flags

Tatsuya, having finished afternoon classes, found himself at the Disciplinary Committee headquarters. Committee members weren't required to show up daily, but on his way to the library, Mari nabbed him. She needed help compiling reports for the freshman recruitment week—work that, despite her request, Tatsuya was handling alone, as Mari hadn't even shown up.

"Somehow, I've been saddled with all the committee's paperwork…" Tatsuya muttered.

The Disciplinary Committee was a hands-on unit, so paperwork was typically a group effort. But with Mari and the others hopeless at it, Tatsuya, a skilled first-year, had become the de facto clerk.

"I barely got to review materials yesterday, and now this… Oh well," he sighed, resigned to following his superior's orders. Just as he began tackling the backlog, an email notification pinged.

"Who's this? …The academy's crest? A teacher?"

Ignoring it wasn't an option. Opening the email, he saw a summons to the counselor's office—immediately.

Mari had dumped the report compilation on him, not without a barrage of sarcasm. Even Miyuki gave him a cold look when he mentioned he'd be late. The reports were Mari's job as committee head, but Tatsuya didn't find it unfair. Having accepted the task, he felt obliged to see it through, no matter the complaints.

"Excuse me," Tatsuya said, entering the counselor's office.

"Come in," replied Haruka Ono.

"What's this about, Ms. Ono?"

"Take a seat."

Tatsuya noticed Haruka's blouse was rather… open. Likely an attempt to take control through charm, but it didn't faze him.

"Is something wrong?" she asked.

"In modern dress code terms, your attire might be a bit too… stimulating," Tatsuya said flatly.

Haruka hastily buttoned up and uncrossed her legs. She'd expected to fluster a high school boy, but Tatsuya's calm rattled her. Brushing it off, she pressed on.

"Why was I called here?" he asked.

"I need your help with our department's work."

"Our?"

"Yes… the counseling department."

Tatsuya's sharp prodding made Haruka pivot to the point. He was proving difficult, and she wanted this over quickly.

"I'll ask you some questions, then."

"You won't tell me the real reason, will you?"

"Real reason? I'm just collecting data from freshmen, as usual!" she stammered.

"A guinea pig like me feels a bit… unique for that. But fine, let's call it that."

Haruka sweated, struggling to maintain her facade. She wasn't fooling him, but outing her would derail everything, so she powered through.

After the questions, Haruka exhaled softly. "You lead quite a life. Most would crack under that stress."

"Medically, maybe. But statistics always have outliers," Tatsuya replied, glancing at the clock.

Sensing his impatience, Haruka wrapped up. "Thanks for helping. Oh, one more thing—rumor has it Mibu from the kendo club confessed to you. True?"

"Where'd that nonsense come from?" Tatsuya sighed heavily, noting Haruka's sudden glee. Just a woman gossiping, teacher or not.

"It's not true? I had a favor to ask if you were dating her…"

"It's a rumor. No interest."

"Well, if anything happens with Mibu, I've got your back."

Tatsuya suspected Mibu was up to something, but further prying seemed pointless. He bowed and turned to leave.

"One more thing!" Haruka called.

"What now?"

"Are you close with Ms. Yasutake, the nurse?"

"Not particularly. Why?"

"I heard she's chummy with a first-year committee member."

Tatsuya sighed again. Misunderstandings were brewing—likely because he'd been seen arm-in-arm with her. "She dragged me to the infirmary to check on me after… an incident. That's all."

"Good to know," Haruka said, visibly relieved.

"Good?" Tatsuya's headache grew. This was getting inconvenient.

"N-Nothing! You're free to go."

Casting a skeptical glance, Tatsuya left, glad to be released.

"Found you!"

The counselor's office was next to the infirmary, so he should've seen this coming. Yet, he'd completely forgotten her.

"Ms. Yasutake… seems there's a misunderstanding."

"Misunderstanding? Let them think what they want! Come to the infirmary, right?" she chirped.

"This isn't a bar…" Tatsuya muttered. "The infirmary's not a casual hangout."

"Don't sweat the small stuff—you'll go bald!"

"You're too carefree…"

Despite his protests, Reimi linked arms with him, dragging him along. Tatsuya could've resisted, but something about her threw him off, leaving him defenseless.

"I've got tasty tea and snacks today!"

"Only kids get excited over that."

"You're fifteen. Still a kid!"

Tatsuya sighed yet again, unable to counter her relentless cheer.

Another flag raised… classic Onii-sama.
