Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Transformations and Obsessions
In the blink of an eye, 15 days had passed.
During this time, Zaydas learned more about this world and discovered that it was more complex than he had imagined.
Starting with the mysterious meteor that fell on this Earth 25 years ago and disappeared, leaving a massive hole in a cornfield.
After this meteor fell, some people gained powers, while others turned into monsters, like that Fake Santa Claus.
The transformation into a monster was similar to [One Punch-Man]: through an obsessive desire, people turned into monsters due to extreme obsessions or personality traits.
Or, using the Fake Santa Claus as an example, he succumbed to despair and anger, transforming into a monster because of an intense emotional breakdown.
In other words, he didn't transform because he died. In fact, the transformation began the moment he learned the whole truth about his wife and daughter, experiencing an emotional collapse, despair, and overwhelming anger.
In addition to these two examples, the same could happen with animals. Quite sad, really. Animals that suffered abuse, mainly because of humans, could end up transforming into monsters.
The variation might depend on the animal. Some become more ferocious and predatory, while others take on characteristics of other animals, which was deduced—without proof yet—as a result of the envy and the obsession the animal had before transforming into a monster.
A good example is a dog that seemed to envy its owner's cat and, after nearly starving when the owner went on a trip—forgetting it at home but taking the cat along—the dog transformed into a giant dog-cat hybrid, full of hatred and resentment.
Its strength could be compared to that of a Middle-Class Devil, and it was Supergirl who defeated it.
It was also this news that Zaydas saw upon arriving in this dimension.
Now comes the important part: the second and third phases.
In the first phase, transformed monsters still have some sanity and are not as ferocious. However, the second phase is different: instincts become less rational and more brutal, wanting only to kill and kill.
In the third phase... Well, let's just say that, at minimum, the power of an insanely strong monster would double, and it would become intelligent but devoid of humanity.
That's why the second phase is feared, as it can lead to a third-phase monster capable of thinking rationally while lacking humanity, killing without being easily caught.
Few third-phase monsters have appeared, but those that did were capable of destroying entire cities.
Only a few, like Superman, managed to defeat a third-phase monster. And there were even some third-phase monsters that, to this day, are said to remain hidden, hunting in the shadows.
These are the most dangerous intelligent third-phase monsters, as, although devoid of humanity, they do not want to die. That's why they avoid places where there are heroes and attack less protected areas, leaving piles of human remains.
Is that all? No!
If there were people essentially returning from the dead full of resentment, there were also those who gained powers.
Some gained simple but powerful abilities, like Super Strength. Others gained something more complex, like controlling elements.
There were even some special cases that could make things they touched explode, and they were ranked as Rank S or Level 4.
The classification of the awakened follows the same ranking as villains, monsters, etc. In short, there wasn't a definitive name for them.
Level 1/Rank C: "villains/monsters" who gained powers and just wanted to cause chaos.Level 2/Rank B: villains/monsters who are naturally strong from the first phase.Level 3/Rank A: villains/monsters who reached the second phase.Level 4/Rank S: the most dangerous and elusive type of villains/monsters, those who passed through the third phase.
Now, converting this into a ranking for "heroes," as they are called by most, although some countries, like Korea, prefer to call them "Hunters"... Anyway, heroes can possess abilities that classify them from level 1 to 3 or, in more special cases, level 4.
However, unlike monsters/villains, most heroes cannot fight immediately after gaining their powers. This is because it's not something simple to control.
For this and other reasons, countries around the world began creating special schools for gifted children. In other words, those with special abilities capable of fighting against monsters/villains.
Superman, Flash, and others were part of the first generation of students from these institutions. Supergirl, Batgirl, and even, believe it or not, Harley Quinn are part of the second generation.
Harley Quinn is a special type with an S classification/level 4 ability. She is capable of materializing a massive mallet, and when she strikes something with it, it explodes.
Of course, this was her most used function, but the truth is that her entire body is a weapon. Whether by kicking or with a simple touch, she can make whatever she touches explode if she wishes.
Because of this, she is powerful and feared.
She was easy to find, actually. She was always on the internet; she even had a social media channel with millions of fans.
Some even believe that Harley Quinn could defeat Supergirl if she wanted to.
There are also special cases like Batgirl. Unlike what Zaydas thought, she was not trained by Batman or anything like that. She was simply a fan of Batman, and when she gained level 3 powers that gave her bat-like abilities, she started calling herself Batgirl.
Meanwhile, Zaydas was standing in front of a blonde-haired boy with violet eyes and pupils shaped like black stars.
Zaydas said to him: "Now, you will no longer have worldly desires and will become a monk. You will shave your head and join a Buddhist temple, understood?"
With unfocused eyes, the boy's voice sounded as if in a trance: "Yes, I will join a Buddhist temple and dedicate my life to it..."
"Very well."
After leaving, Zaydas stretched and thought: 'I did all the research I wanted, got enough money by robbing some corrupt politicians... And, hehe.'
Thinking about the life the boy would lead as a future Buddha, Zaydas couldn't help but laugh in his mind.
[+2,000 AP!]
"!!!"
'Hey, hey, is this for real?' Zaydas hadn't imagined that a selfish action he took out of spite, inspired by the anime Oshi no Ko, and something he'd always wanted to do, would actually earn him such a generous reward.
'Was his importance so relevant that it deserved such a high score?'
This also made Zaydas realize that not everything is black and white. Often, it's gray. This was a small example of that. Although he thought he would gain some (AP), he hadn't expected his relevance to be high enough to be worth this much.
The time he could stay in this dimension was running out. If he didn't return soon, he wouldn't even have time to go to school.
As he walked, people and even the police paid no attention to him, as he was in "Devil mode," a mode that blurred others' focus on him.
Of course, this only worked on ordinary people; he would be noticed if it were someone with abilities or special powers.
In an isolated area, Zaydas used Dimensional Leap.

[April 9, Kuoh Town]
It was already the next day, and Zaydas was walking home.
On this tiring day, it rained heavily early in the morning; because of that, he didn't go to school by motorcycle.
There was the option of using one of the cars, but walking home for a day wasn't that bad.
In the afternoon, the rain had stopped, and although the ground was still a little wet, that was about it.
"Don't you agree, Zaydas-sama?"
Looking at her, Zaydas replied, "Well, everyone has their own tastes. If he likes to dress as a girl, even though he's a boy, what's wrong with that?"
"Yes, you're right." Ravel became pensive.
"Tell me a little about Gasper at school. He's in your class, right?"
Snapping out of her thoughts, she glanced at him sideways while keeping an eye on the road and replied, "A bit too shy and scared, but from what I've seen, he's trying his best."
"I see," Zaydas said. "You already know a bit about him, don't you? His case is somewhat special but quite common. Being different leads to social exclusion. That's precisely why school uniforms are a rule to follow."
"Well, that also happens among Devils. But, Zaydas-sama…" she asked, "why does discrimination, bullying, etc., still exist in school?"
"Because human beings are idiots most of the time," Zaydas said. "Although it's not right to generalize, it's a fact that the younger they are, the worse it can be."
"For example, someone being too smart can end up being bullied, right?" she commented.
"Exactly. There are no exceptions to the rule. Whether it's for being smart, dumb, ugly, beautiful, etc.," Zaydas said. "Even the smallest reason can make a bully want to target someone."
Zaydas knew there were genuinely good kids, but also those who took time to mature—whether because of upbringing at home or the influence of external factors.
One example was a news story he had seen about two siblings under the age of ten who had watched a movie where a man fell onto train tracks and became curious about what it would be like to see that happen in real life. But since they couldn't do that with an adult, they took advantage of a moment when a mother left her baby alone for an instant and stole it...
The rest is easy to imagine.
So, were they just kids, or were they bad? Naïve? Future psychopaths, perhaps?
The fact that their mindset and empathy weren't fully developed, making them unable to grasp the weight of their actions, led them to do something foolish.
Who hasn't looked back and thought, "Why did I do that?"
If it gets to that point, it means you've started to understand the weight of your actions that you didn't comprehend before.
While they were talking, someone stopped in front of Zaydas and Ravel, looking lost, and started speaking in Italian.
"Ciao (Hello)!"
Zaydas and Ravel were Devils and, as such, could understand all languages.
Ravel replied in perfect Italian: "Possiamo aiutarti (Can we help you)?"
When the girl, who was wearing nun's clothing and had blonde hair, heard Ravel speaking Italian, her green eyes lit up: "I've been in trouble since I arrived here. Ummm... I don't speak Japanese very well... I got lost, and other people couldn't understand what I was saying..."
She held her hands in front of her chest and seemed very sad.
